My understanding is that it gives you a leg up in terms of exit opportunities, by having that magic circle name on your CV. The workload and hours are extremely grinding - similar to how many people will start off at Big Four accountancy firms for the first few years and then seek opportunities elsewhere as it opens a lot of doors. Probably applies to investment banking too e.g with those working at Goldman Sachs.
not especially true - she's in commercial law theres not really any other opportunities she could step-up to other than US elite firms in London, at which the hours are worse- she's already pretty much at the top- the only doors it opens for her would be 'downwards' from magic circle like silver circle etc

Any reason for this?
I'd have thought that a magic circle firms would be very 'tempting' (can't think of a better word) for newly qualified solicitors
people tend to head in house, to finance or to US for more money or Silver for more life balance. After few years associate level Links pays literally same as silver circle and much less than US.

So basically it’s kinda loses its appeal

Hours at links are literally just as bad as most US. My ex worked there and worked late literally every day. He worked on a bloody holiday too

As a trainee at an MC firm myself (not Links) I can confirm that my plan is to qualify and gtfo! It doesn't matter if Links is the 'elite' - I feel like someone like Eve has a great appreciation for a work/life balance considering all her hobbies and would prefer to be an associate somewhere where a 9-6 workday is actually somewhat possible. At any rate, if it's not looking like you'll make partner (which will be made pretty clear) there's no point staying and grinding.

Out of curiosity, what sort of hours might you expect to work at an MC firm?
On a 'good' day it's 9.30-7.30ish, on a bad/horrific day we are expected to routinely work til gone midnight. I don't have any pre-Covid experience but I'd imagine it was probably worse before!

Why has she been nominated for an LGBT award
w h a t

I mean yeah she's part of LGBT but she's never really spoken about it and rather kept it private (which is absolutely okay). It's just annoying people are getting awards for just being. I'd say there are people who were deserving a nomination much more cause they did much more (or anything) for the community.

Like yeah, she's done a few talks about being LGBT and in law at her old uni, but what exactly has she actually done for our movement and community that needs honouring?

She literally came out six months ago, she's a baby in terms of activism and speaking up for the community.

Perhaps it's the fact that she's in a career that's usually very straight dominated. There's been a lot of push recently to have law firms seem approachable to LGBT people and to give them representation in that area

That being said, she hasn't actually done anything and presumably would have applied as an applicant who thinks they're 'straight' and fits in at the company

Thought this was funny. Someone posted this comment on Roll on Friday (a website where a lot of lawyers gossip). They’ve redacted the persons name but 100% seems to be talking about Eve.

I’m in the industry myself and I can’t think of anyone else it could be about. Plus they refer to a “managing associate” which is a known Linklaters position/title (99.9% of other firms use “Senior Associate”). Basically seems no one wants to work with her, may explain why she’s doing a random start up seat now.

Is this why she got the tech secondment?

I can't stand her videos at the moment, they just sound like she's trying to be clever by using terms like "toxic productivity echo chamber" but honestly what did she say in that video? The only points I got out of it were 1. productivity is a social construct and babies aren't born trying to be productive (no tit?) and 2. she bought a Nintendo switch...

oh wow, any idea why she seems to be so unpopular?

Could be, its a dud seat choice to have on your CV. I certainly wouldn't pick it as my final seat. but then again I wouldn't be surprised if she chose the seat, its an easy one and likely will give her 9-5 hours.

Well in my cohort (im at a different firm) we all think she's just bit cringe. and lawyers are just very dry humoured peeps and her enthusiasm is nauseating. She comes across very obnoxious and all knowing when she's just a trainee (her marching around, showing the office tour on YouTube I bet went down like a lead balloon with her colleagues).

I agree, I think her editing is impressive and actually sets her apart from most of the other YouTubers/influencers. But what is she actually saying? nothing, it’s all show and no substance. The last video I was looking forward to as the premise is interesting but she made it so boring and it just lacked any insightful content into actual toxic productivity? She talked about happiness and then suddenly it was over lol,

I don’t like the fact that she goes months between posting a video and then when she does it’s a AD, seems money grabbing and like the only reason she’s back is to do this ad? I completely get she’s working but then wouldn’t the videos you make be because you love it as a hobby? Rather than an AD every single time... it’s a shame! she seems v different compared to when she was at law school and actually grateful for the platform she has

I'd say it's also sketchy she was somewhat sponsored by Linklaters since maybe it may seem unfair to other candidates and/or trainees and give an impression she receives some special treatment. At least it was very sketchy to me.

In overall I think she became very obnoxious after graduating and the moment she started all the posing and fake-deep monologues in her videos is when I stopped watching her really. That and the fact nowadays she only posts sth when she's sponsored.

I know I'd be pissed off if someone started at where I'm working swanning around like they owned the place doing an office tour sponsored by my employer and then I found out they were making videos before being qualified claiming they were the thing they were training to be.

The whole sponsorship thing is why I think they gave her a training position as an 'illusion' of being part of their outreach team. Even the videos about Linklaters specifically just seemed like massive advertisements for the actual company even if they were well shot
