It’s exactly this. Influencers think they’re important: they’re literally just cheap advertising.

In the ye olden days you’d have a camera crew filming Vox pops of preview shows and then paying for ad space in prime time tv slots to have people say a show is awesome. Now you get the exact same message delivered to whatever demographic you like in exchange for a gifted ticket to a preview event.

Emmy exists because the way she values her time is cheap as chips, and her priority in life is having her big fat head seen by people.

Best way I can help people understand influencers is this: remember TV commercial breaks? Nobody watches TV anymore, but businesses/government/sporting events etc. still have huge marketing budgets and need to get their message out. Because everyone’s got their heads in their phones all day, advertising now comes in the form of “influencers”, just without any of the important regulation, authority or control that came with television broadcasting.

The REAL issue is that lack of transparency. When you watched TV, you knew when you were being advertised to. Now? Not so much. People who have creepy parasocial relationships with influencers have no idea they’re being blatantly lied to. And influencers who are intentionally deceptive and don’t declare paid partnerships or aren’t honest, are simply using their audience of idiots to make big money.

Influencers won’t be going away any time soon.
