Agh which one?! You can’t leave us hanging!
It could just be in my head but it’s the Elis James and John Robins podcast on BBC5 live. Producer Jess (think that’s her name, the female producer who’s been mainly on the isolation tapes) is in love with John.

John used to date Sara Pascoe and is now engaged to a fashion designer called Coco.

It’s been simmering away for weeks 😂

When they did the Pandolly podcast - there was an episode where they recommended a load of books. I read a lot of them and they were amazing! It really opened my eyes to other fiction as I was a bit of a chick lit/bog standard thriller gal.

Now I seldom read books that they recommend. They over hype really average writers who they then do an author special on. It’s such a shame because I think they had an authentic influence on reading which has been cheapened with advertising and bigging up their mates’ books.
off-topic but do you remember which episode this was? I’m in the market for some older recommendations and can’t be bothered to sift through all their old episodes!

No idea sorry! Off the top of my head (and a quick look at my goodreads!) these were on there:
Amy Schumer autobiography
A Little Life
Any Human Heart
Rod Stewart’s autobiography
Valley of the dolls
Opposite of loneliness
The Circle - Dave Eggar
The versions of us
The interestings
Americanah

How many of the books and shows mentioned are paying their way in to the conversation ? How much did they structure or script it to make it relevant to bring up ?I know I shouldn’t be surprised but I guess I didn’t realise a single book could sponsor a podcast epsiode - and only require an off the cuff mention. Also it rubs me the wrong way that the epsiode starts with their gin sponsor but this one is hidden at the end where most wont hear it. A glimpse at how the sausage is made I guess, never nice.
I've no doubt that both of them are big readers, but agree that the quality of recommendations has decreased recently. I also remember a while ago (and sadly I can't recall which book or episode) they discussed a newly released book that I'd also read recently. I'd also seen a review of this book in a newspaper (written by a different journalist). I remember noting that the only extracts they referred to from the book were the same ones referred to in the review. It made me question if they actually fully read everything they discuss...

Not that my opinion is worth much but I’ll still give it. Americanah is worth the hype and everyone should check it out who hasn’t. Takes a small amount of commitment to get into but once you are, you’re hooked. That golden formula of a page turner with literary merit. The perspective on race in America still feels unique, even if there Is much more of a discussion on the wider topic then there was when this was written. It might even teach you something. Not said condescendingly, it taught me a hell of a lot.

The interestings is also a damn good read. It probably won’t teach you quite as much about society Etc but it’s a damn good story to get stuck into and also a page turner if you commit. Reminds me of Jonathan Franzen if anyone has read him.

A little life is controversial. People love it. I hated it. Two words : Misery porn.

oh what do you mean this isn’t the book thread ?

talking of books, has anyone read Pandora's book yet, and what did they think? It's had good write-ups so far but I'm holding off buying it because I felt cheated after Dolly's book (which I bought based on the multiple celebrity recommendations and reviews, but I hated it and couldn't finish it - definitely felt like nepotism/favours in action in my view).

A friend of mine started to read it and couldn’t finish the first chapter. Said it’s not brilliantly written/rambling!

She definitely has talked about her daughter on the podcast before and called her Zadie rather than “my daughter”. I haven’t actually noticed her doing that, has she come out and said she won’t say their names or have you just noticed yourself? Also yes Dolly definitely is godmother to the wee boy as she posted an insta calling him her godson
I noticed that she never mentioned their names herself on the podcast or on her Instagram and I haven’t seen her son’s name anywhere. Then when I saw the dedication in her book it seemed conspicuous that she’d just used their initials.

Embarrassingly enough I listened to an older podcast episode about an hour after making that post and Dolly used Zadie’s name a few times so it might not be as much of a ‘thing’ as I thought!!

Her son’s name (the first two names I think are lovely) is on the birth announcement on her IG, just prior to Christmas.

I read her essay The Authentic Lie and it was basically a lot of words that didn’t really say much. She seems to rely on other writers/researchers to back up points rather than making a solid thought or statement. I want to know HER opinions, not some wishy-washy summary of what everyone else has said.

Hmm sounds like the product of a 2:1 in a humanities degree from a red brick university. The inability to create a strong coherent argument despite clearly putting in work and offering plenty of sources and quotes from others is a mark of the mediocre undergraduate essay. Sounds like she still writes like she is one. I could be wrong. Curious to read one of her essays now.

I feel like 2020 is so late for a middle class millennial white woman who hasn’t done much to publish a book of essays. It’s become such a cliche, post-Girls and lena Dunham (Tho even she was parodying that from the first series ). and I think it was cynically alluded to in i may destroy you too, which is funny as pandora raves about it so much. The main character’s first book started out as tweets (banal ? Trivial?) and became a collection of essays with a terribly trite name like ‘confessions of a millennial.’ It’s far from explicit but I think we’re encouraged to see she’s not fulfilled her potential with that and it’s more of an easy cash in. Hence what she goes through to produce her next work is more valuable as she actually has something to say. Wonder if pandora picked up on that...

I was expecting to like Pandora’s writing based on how much she reads and the way she talks about literature in general but having read a few articles and extracts recently I agree with the wishy washy statement. Wishy washy and trying to hard to sound ever so intelligent and well read.

She has said a few times recently that she no longer has an opinion on everything and how she thinks it’s important to listen, consider etc which is all well and good but listening to two people waffle on without committing to anything sometimes gets ridiculous.

I find Pandora very insincere. They’ll often reflect on what they said the previous week once a listener had given them some feedback and seem to earnestly change their position, or Pandora will say something like ‘I hadn’t thought of it like that, so thank you’

...but when it comes to a subject that actually affects her she digs her heels in. I remember when they reviewed Phillipa Perry’s excellent book based on decades of experience as a psychotherapist and backed by neuroscience, she refused to believe part of it because clearly she found it too confronting to accept her own misgivings as a parent.

I also have no idea how she’s managed to read, watch, listen to so much as well as do an online cookery course and work with a husband who works full time without any support with her two very young kids during lockdown. I’m barely managing part time work and keeping 2 under 2 alive. 10 mins of tattle at nap time is essentially my only free time. So presumably there’s a nanny or grandparent on hand. I’d love for her to clarify as something doesn’t add up.

Also smoking when you have a baby. Not a fan.

I always find it strange when people re start smoking after having a child, you have (presumably) given up for 9 months why not continue?

This. And write a book! I think I vaguely remember her saying she'd had a bit of help but am I imagining that? She must have a nanny. Which I don't want to be judgey about as I think she has been relatively open about it. The thing that is a bit off though is she keeps banging on about the 'burden' that women have, things like buying kids' birthday cards, knowing where her daughter's hair bobbles are, booking dentist appointments, etc. To me that seems like a bit of a non-issue. I imagine if a shelf needs putting up on the wall her husband takes care of that? Seems like a pointless thing to complain about.

I just wonder if the nanny continued to be employed during lockdown as she seemed to be spinning a lot of plates without explanation.

She’s been very upfront that she needs a nanny in order to work.

I haven’t heard her discuss ‘the burden’, but what I call ‘the though load’ has nearly broken me as a parent. The ‘Do we have toilet paper? Aluminium foil? Summer school uniform that fits? Pet food? Tippex? Birthday cake candles? Sticky tape? Coat hangers?’

The minutiae of family life that is relentless, unappreciated, always falls to me, but keeps families functioning.
