I absolutely loathe attending weddings and often joke to my OH and family I'm surprised I turned up to my own.

Think I’m in the minority but I love them. It would have to be a fairly tit wedding for me to not have a good time tbh 🤣 once the food is decent, there’s music and a bar then I’m happy 😆

I am with you!! I bloody love weddings! Everything about them - the build up, planning an outfit, getting ready, the ceremony, the whole lot. I love to see people having a good time, get me on the dancefloor with the Best Mans tie round my head!! Love it!
My brother gets married in July, I am maid of honour and I can't bloody wait!

I don't mind them but inevitably there's a lot of waiting around, being hungry and tedious small talk. I prefer ones that my husband and I go to without our children or that I've been to alone (my brother's was at the other end of the country which would have cost us a fortune so I went with my mum and dad, left them all at home and had a great time 😂).

I've got one coming up and equally looking forward to it and dreading it! It's my favourite cousin and I'm really pleased for her. However....my children are coming which increases my stress levels, there's family politics I can't be bothered with and the timings are such that we're going to struggle to eat beforehand and there's many hours between ceremony and dinner. Plus the cost, I'm weeping at how much. I'm going to the hen weekend, I'd say it'll be about £500 by the time it's all over which is insane.

One thing I hate about weddings is when the bride and groom have split up family groups on tables and decide that everyone needs to 'mix'. No thanks I'd rather sit with my sister in law or my nephew etc than some randomer.

Yeah, it's really weird.

Bumping this as all my colleagues seem to be getting married at the minute lol

Got invited to a wedding abroad in June, it's quite a whirlwind romance so will be interesting to see how it goes. Its so annoying at the minute though as it's in the constant 'prep' stage so it's not stop hearing about every little detail in the office.

Then got another one who hates the idea of wedding, talking about it, doing any action towards it. So a mystery why she's getting married at all.

Also an engagement party in August which will be all drama, at least it hopefully will be sunny.

Hate weddings and hen dos! Thankfully all my friends are now married, so the last wedding I attended I was thinking thank heavens, this is the last time 😂

Is it becoming the norm to not get a thank you for gifts??? I've had two weddings where there was no thank you at all. Not a card, text, absolutely nothing. I find that incredibly rude! The two gifts were £100 and £50, were they offended it wasn't more or something?!

My main friendship group is three of us, who have been best friends since school. One of them got married late last year, and it's been a real eye opener for what sort of person she is to be honest. The hen do was a weekend away costing almost £500, which me and other friend forked out for to not upset her (quite a few people wouldn't go which she was very upset about). She was huffing with another friend of ours for months because she couldn't afford to go - this is a friend who works a minimum wage job and has a mortgage to pay! The bride is mid 30s - a bit old to be huffing like a teenager...

Her wedding was an hour's drive away and we didn't want to stay over. It was my birthday the next day and I had plans, while our other friend has a toddler and she wanted to get back home that night. We'd also spent enough as it was, between the hen do, gift, hair + makeup. We told her in advance that we couldn't stay over at dinner one night, and the mood completely shifted, she was furious. On the wedding night, we stayed til around 11pm (we were there for almost 12 hours) but she clearly was not happy with us for not staying over. In fact on the wedding day, she barely even bothered with us! And has hardly spoken a word to us since, except to tell us she couldn't make it to a catchup dinner we were planning. And not a thank you for our wedding gifts either. Not a text or card, nothing. Four months have passed so it doesn't look like we'll be getting a thank you now. It must be because we didn't stay over 🙄 we are honestly so cross, how rude and unreasonable is that? She used to be very laid back and an understanding person, it's a complete shift and so odd.

I'm engaged, but absolutely not interested in a wedding day and neither is fiance, thankfully no pressure from our families either. Elopement sounds perfect and I'm loving the Las Vegas stories on here!!

I was at a wedding a couple of months ago and just got a generic thank you via WhatsApp for the gift.

Destination weddings should be illegal. Honestly, I was invited to one that is bloody miles away (literally) and would have cost a fortune. I've spent months thinking of how to go and eventually decided I couldn't. I then had to go through all the stress of telling the bride. Just horrible to be put in that position.

I accepted an invite to a wedding we had to travel to and never, ever will I again! The travelling was a nightmare, we were very delayed, it cost us a fortune and it just turned into one big stress worrying about if we’d even get there and then we were absolutely knackered because we arrived so late the early hours and the wedding was the next day. Was not worth the stress, hassle or the money! Especially as this person isn’t really anyone massively special or close to me, I think I just felt pressured to not say no but in future unless it’s family or someone really close it’ll be a no!

I do love a (local) wedding but hen dos are a pain in the a because it seems every one thinks they’re entitled to a huge amount of your money, time and annual leave.

TBH, I hate weddings. I burst into tears at my friend's wedding as it was some mushroom risotto, and I had terrible food anxiety and couldn't eat it. After the wedding meal, we went to the hotel bar and ordered hotel food (more expensive but tastier). So, overall, a lot of time at a wedding, they will serve some fancy tit food which no one wants to eat. When we got married, we were very conscious about having tasty foods and something that everyone would enjoy eating - I didn't want myself or anyone to have food anxiety.

I hate fixed wedding menus if you dont get at least a choice at my friends wedding there was no choice the starter was prawn cocktail 8 out of the 10 guests on our table didnt even touch it

I love weddings! I just love love 🤣 I can understand why some don’t like going but I can honestly say if I didn’t want to go to one for any reason I just wouldn’t, I’m past the stage of caring what others think now and if it’s gonna make me uncomfortable I ain’t going 🌝

We’ve got my Sister-in-Laws next month and I love my husband’s family so I can’t wait to go. We’ve turned it in to a little staycation as it’s a fair drive away so excited for some time away too while my Mum and sister look after the pooches 👰🏻‍♀️🤵🏻💒

I was just thinking, I also hate hen do with a fiery raging passion. The last one, I nearly got stung by a wasp, and the other one - I HAD TO TAKE MY MUM TOO, AND IT WAS AT A NIGHTCLUB. I had this friend who would take her mum everywhere, and for whatever reason, she would never see me or just hang out without parents (it took a long time to figure out she wasn't a friend). If I saw her, it was always with parents, which you can imagine when you're 18 and being with your parents - the cringe.
I always felt she only made me a bridesmaid because they needed one more person.
Which also, every time I've been a bridesmaid, I'm no longer friends or in contact with any of them.

I've been to a handful of weddings and each one has been tedious tbh. It's noisy and crowded, socialising with acquaintances gets old after the first 15 minutes and I always find myself wondering what's the correct thing to say/to ask/to do. If I enjoyed parties maybe I'd have fun but a friend had a very chill posh cocktail party type wedding and that was exhausting too. I always find the whole thing so awkward, regardless of how close I am to the couple.

Which is why I feel bad for people who plan a wedding around what would make others happy. People will never be fully content, it's your day and you should get married in a way that makes you happy. Guests will forget what they didn't like but the couple should remember the day well.

I love weddings too. I don't get invited to many so that's probably why 😁

The only thing that drives me mad is when the bride and groom choose a completely random venue. I'm going to one soon that is in a random location in the UK. It's not were any family lives. Not where the bride or groom live. There is absolutely no connection to the location whatsoever, they just liked the venue. This means the entire wedding party and all guests will have to travel and stay overnight (2 nights realistically because it is still quite far away). It's a massive expense to everyone and as it's in the UK we'll be expected to go.
My cousin is getting married next year and has done the exact same thing. A random venue in a random part of london. She doesn't live there, her family don't live anywhere near there, nor her husband's family. So we've all got to trek up there and stay over somewhere for 1 or 2 nights. It's such a faff but we have to go 😂

I hate wedding venues that dont have enough space for everyone
We had a family wedding recently in a hotel but the space outside of the reception room wasn't big enough to accommodate everyone whilst they were changing the room from dinner to evening reception which took about 3 hours
so by the time me and hubby had got a drink from the bar We had nowhere to sit after aimlessly wandering around for half an hour one of my relatives grabbed us and took us in to the little snug room as she was staying the night she had access to it it was lovely just sitting there catching up to be fair it was the best part of the day and I was reluctant to rejoin the wedding for the evening do

Unfortunately, as I've also discovered, this seems to be the case these days.

Like yourself, I've recently given gifts of £200 (nephew) & £50 (friend's son) and haven't had a thank you from either of them. I wasn't able to attend my nephew's wedding due to illness and I wasn't a guest at my friend's son's wedding, so maybe they thanked people for their gifts during their speeches, or maybe on Facebook or something ... which I'm also not on.

Both gifts were donated online on one of those 'wedding gift' thingies where you could either buy a listed present of their choosing, or just donate money towards their honeymoon, etc. Granted, after I'd sent the £s a message came up saying: X & X would like to thank you for your generous gift. Is this what passes for a personal 'thank you' these days ... after people have kindly donated money they maybe could ill afford? Very bad form, if so.

I don't mind admitting I'm feeling more than just a little bit miffed.
