Do you enjoy weddings?

I find attending a wedding has lots peaks and troughs. Especially as a female, you’re up at the crack of dawn getting hair and make up done which i find stressful but exciting (hoping you look nice but what if the MUA gives you orange contouring and giant brows lol). Then you get there and I loooooove seeing all your friends and people you know looking fancy, checking out your friends outfits etc. Love the ceremony, especially if it’s a humanist one. But then the drinks reception is so dull, sitting around for hours, maybe getting calling to be in the odd photo. Then I like the speeches as they’re usually good, dinner is fine cos who doesn’t like getting fed haha. Then after that they kick you out of the room to re-set it for the evening and you’re just hanging around again. Like the first dance and a few hours of reception but by half 9 I’m shattered, feet are killing me, dying to wash my face and take the 40,000 kirbies out of my hair.

I like them but I hate the pressure that comes from weddings. I feel sorry for the bride and groom sometimes, they always look a bit strained from having to put on a perfect show, the bride has to look perfect, photos have to look great, groom has to put on a good speech, etc. Its a shame its become so expensive and extravagant, they dont really get to just enjoy the day as theres so much organise and get right. It's a pressure as a guest too to look your best, be on best behaviour, and find the right gift, and mingle with people who haven't met before. I enjoy the evening party though as eveyone can just relax, drink and dance!

I love them. I had the big church wedding shebang last summer (covid restrictions in Scotland were a bit of nightmare though). However I'm going to one this summer and I'm so excited especially as there will be a ceilidh. I love an excuse to dress up, get my hair done, see my friends, have a dance. I have booked an airbnb in the town nearish and so making a bit of a weekend of it. I'm also excited as this is the first wedding where I haven't been the bride or a bridesmaid in years! I'm also late 20s so it is the time for weddings! Also get to see my husband in a kilt which is always nice.

I have a love hate thing with weddings!

I like the ceremony but a lot of the time it can be a bit awkward. The groom speaks a little too quietly or people write vows that I find cringe. Church weddings I think are perfect because it adds a solemnity and gravitas to the event and the vows are familiar and solemn and actually very fitting, even if you arent religious. But I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

I hate how commercialised they’ve become. Barns charging thousands (it’s just a plain old barn fgs). Most brides look stunning on the day but as someone who is obsessed with clothing; most brides pay far too much for their dresses. The cut and material are just not great and they’ll have paid thousands for it. I think us ladies just get carried away with the fun and happiness of trying on bridal gowns and it removes that more critical eye we have. A friend of mine is super tall and slim and I was convinced she could pull off any type of dress, but it was slightly too big for her bust and the material crumpled by the time she was walking down the aisle. One big thing I’ve noticed with brides is that a lot of the gowns just don’t fit their bust properly.

most of the time I enjoy the chance to catch up with friends, dress up (how often do we get chances to wear more formal wear?), take photos, eat nice food and have a bit of a dance. But I’m enjoying weddings less and less because I’m usually too tired by the time it comes round to dancing.

three courses IMO, is way too much. Wedding days are usually far too long. The wedding industry is really crappy to couples and completely exploitive.

the “worst” wedding I went to, I oddly enjoyed the most. Purely because I got a good level of drunk and was in my mid 20s so could still have the stamina to last until midnight. It had a garden that everyone could just chill in the sun which made it less stressful. Nothing worse than being forced to stand around in a chilly reception room.

I think it was the worst though because the Bride and Groom spent a fortune but on the totally wrong things. They were pretty stingy with the wine and canapés but spent a ton on entertainment including a magician and silhouette artist, popcorn and candy floss machines etc lots of gimmicky stuff. The bride also made the bridesmaids pay for their own hair and makeup, shoes and dress alterations. She paid a fortune for the dresses when I’m sure the bridesmaids would’ve rather a cheaper dress and not had to be out of pocket when they had to pay for transport and hotel rooms too. There was definitely a bit of resentment in the bridal party over that.

I like attending hen dos because it’s nice to have a girly night out and celebrate the hen. But I hate how much one-upmanship there is. If I have to attend one more cocktail making event and do a nude drawing class, I’ll scream. What’s wrong with just relaxing in an air BnB or playing silly games? When the average cost of a hen do for me goes into the territory of £400-500, I really hate the tradition of paying for the hen, which might be controversial.

anyway that’s my rant over😅

Weddings aren't for me, lots of sitting around and waiting about, I find them a long day, obviously you have all the prep before hand, hair make up, them travelling to venue. I'd probably prefer to be an evening guest.
I'm glad I've only ever had to be at a few over a number of years.

I'm not really a fan.
They're usually too long.
Ceremonies are boring unless you're extremely close friends/family.
Speeches are the worst. Hate them.
The best bit is the evening when everyone can relax and have fun.
I'm planning a wedding and we will have close family at the ceremony and meal, no speech other than a thank you, and then a big party where everyone can let loose and we'll invite friends, extended family, and colleagues to that part.

Interesting topic. I've always found weddings tedious. I see so many people go to wedding after wedding and I just assume it's for the free booze. Really can't think of another reason to go unless you're directly related to them and kind of have no choice.

I remember going to a wedding and they were really skimpy with the wine -it felt like there was hardly any, but they’d organised a ton of “entertainment” like magicians and caricaturists etc. that they spent a fortune on. I really wish they’d just been a tad more generous with the wine allowance, not really interested in a guy doing balloon tricks but would’ve liked more than a single glass of wine at dinner to get me through some tedious speeches.

Don’t mind an evening do but doing the whole day bores the bits off me. Hate when it’s really far away and you’re not getting home til late.

Absolutely hate hen do’s!!

I’m not a fan. Would rather just go to the evening do. Attending a family wedding in July so having to take my daughter who’ll be 18 months. Bride isn’t happy that I won’t take my older 2 children out of school for it. Tried to say politely that they would be bored and wouldn’t enjoy it. They’ll be there from the meal onwards.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I feel like so many bride and grooms expect you to care about the wedding as much as they do. 🙈

Also when did all these extreme weddings start?

Was it when OK magazine started covering celebrities weddings?

I feel like they are becoming more and more outrageous. One up manship on the last wedding they went to. Cant possibly do less.

Not unpopular I completely agree, if it's what they want then fair enough but don't expect others to be as excited.

Last three weddings I’ve been to have been the sort where my attendance was “expected” and my absence wouldn’t look great.

One was a cousin where I had to play happy all day with extended family who I hadn’t seen for years and have zero in common with. Plus I was missing the football which I wasn’t happy about 😂😂. The meat dish was apparently awful (I got very lucky with my veggie meal. Just happened to be a favourite)

Another was a former friends mother… ceremony was okay registry office quickie job. The “do” afterwards was the worst bit. Really grimy pub affair spent most of the afternoon waiting till people started leaving and I could slip away without looking impolite despite the fact the bride had spent most of the afternoon smoking like chimney in the beer “garden” and barely interacting with any guests who were inside.

Third was a couple of fellow church attendees. They’re not people I particularly like but felt I had to make an appearance as they’d invited the entire congregation. Thankfully it was only a ceremony invite and it was over and done with in just over an hour but it’s an hour of my life I’ll never back that I wasted on a couple who just aren’t good people.

So no I don’t really like weddings 😂😂 might change my mind if it was someone who’s wedding I actually wanted to go and no one were I felt I had to. But to be honest I’d still probably rather be elsewhere wearing something comfortable and being in charge of my own day. I’ve better things to be doing with my life and money. It probably doesn’t help I’ve never had the desire to marry even as child I never wanted to play brides and the idea of being “given away” grossed me out.

I think it depends on who's it is. Good friend or family is a different day out, isn't it. If its your husbands friend or colleagues then it might be different.

I'd rather spend the money on a night away tbh. They're all pretty same ish nowadays. Whilst thinking they are being original.

Great topic!

I love attending weddings as a guest. I have a large extended family so when it's a family wedding it's always a great catchup. When it's a friends wedding, love catching up with people I haven't seen in a while and meeting members of the bride and groom's families.
It's always nice seeing everyone dressed up, and I LOVE getting on the dancefloor and singing along! Gift wise, I'm a standard $100 in a card, more if the couple is close to me or my husband.

As a bride though, I hated my wedding day. Never wanted a wedding, registry office would have done me fine but my husband's mother had a total shitfit because I was 5 months pregnant and we were unwed. So it was a quick, small affair at my husband's church in a cream puff dress that I hated. Hated my hair and makeup. We went to our local pub afterwards with our 30 odd guests. Great food, open bar and our guests loved it. I sat in my cream puff gown the whole time feeling like a right clown. Went back to our place afterwards with our guests to continue the merriment and I was able to take the cream puff gown off and put my jeans and a shirt on, take my hair out and relax! Hubby was drunk as a skunk by 11pm and we slept in separate beds 😆 Looking back, I'm glad we did do the church part, and last year we celebrated our 10 year anniversary at the same church in a private vow renewal with our priest and our two children present.

I've only been a bridesmaid once, for my sister. I hated it lol. Too much responsibility. I made a speech which was well received. Spent most of the day and night running my feet off making sure everything was going smoothly. Missed out on food because I was ferrying my children and my nieces from the reception to the babysitter, then had to go get more alcohol because they had provided their own to the venue and stocks were running low. Didn't get to sit and chat with anyone. Ended up having to take care of our extremely inebriated aunty who was laying outside on the grass next to her own vomit. It was hectic! But it was lovely when everyone left and it was just me, my sister and her husband and my husband sharing a quiet beer.
