Oh lord as someone who is planning their wedding this thread is stressing me out!! 🤣🤣
Dont feel stressed. I dont enjoy weddings but I still attend because I like the people who are getting married and I know itl make them happy that I attend their special day. Plan your day how you want it to be. There isnt much people could do to make a wedding more enjoyable other than don't invite me so don't stress. Youl have the best time because its your day and your guests will attend because they care about you.

Your wedding will be beautiful, I'm sure 💓

Some mole Tattler 😜 people will always have an opinion on everything - they can sod off. Do what you can afford and what makes you happy. You'll twist yourself into a pretzel trying to please everybody, so just focus on the things that will bring you and your partner joy. It's your day together, and your future memories 💟

I love weddings. They are usually such happy days and I love the opportunity to get dressed up and have a few glasses of fizz. I always feel honoured being invited to weddings 😂

Probably an unpopular opinion but I feel like so many bride and grooms expect you to care about the wedding as much as they do. 🙈

Maybe I’ve been lucky but most of my friends are really appreciative of everyone being there, as opposed to thinking everyone cares as much as they do!

the most “bridezilla” of myfriends wasn’t a bridezilla because she wanted the day to focus on herself, she was just super uptight and really carefully
planning every detail to make sure the guests were happy. Generally I don’t always have the time of my life at weddings but I’m always happy for my friends and feel grateful to be able to share their memories with them.

on a side note, I’ve notice on the likes of online forums etc when the topic of weddings comes up… there is ALWAYS someone who says something along the lines of “we spent £50 on our wedding, I sewed my dress together out of an old curtain, we had it had the local weather spoons and our guests said it was the best wedding they’d ever been to”

1. unfortunately, how good a time your guests have is pretty subjective and largely out of the bride and grooms control. You can never please everyone. I’ve been to the most stunningly beautiful wedding but didn’t enjoy it because I had a migraine. I went to a stingy wedding where half the brides family weren’t speaking and had a blast just because I was in the mood to party.
2. It feels like a pretty rude thing to say, people spend a lot of time, effort and money on one of the most special days of their life. By saying to someone else that their day was the “best” is kinda disparaging towards the other weddings you were invited to (imo).
3. I swear people only ever say “that was the best wedding I’ve been to” because they are aware the person spent £50 on it and want to reassure them that the cost had no bearing on the fun they had.

You have been v lucky 😆

We were invited to a wedding we had to travel to which as well as being in a different country, the venue was in the middle of nowhere and cost approx £350-£400 per night. For *one* room.

For reference we are not rich, we dont move in those sort of circles so £400 for one night to us is *alot*

Wedding was beautiful, service amazing but all in it cost us probably £1000 to attend and there is literally nothing I could do on this planet that Id say would be worth £1k for one night.

Thanks @SnarkyTart and @Caffeine Fiend !

Like you both said, it's our day and sod them if they don't like it! I'm a worrier, so just need to keep that mantra in my head. Plus different strokes for different folks! X
That's the point to be fair. Your wedding, your way. I don't go to weddings because I don't like them personally, but that doesn't mean the choices people make at their wedding are tit and I certainly wouldn't go to criticise them. A wedding is about the couple getting married no one else and if people (like me) don't like it they shouldn't attend.

Oh the 'I spent the least' brigade wind me up. Let people spend what the duck they want without making them feel bad for it. I've found absolutely no correlation to how much enjoyment I've had Vs how much was spent.

Has anyone gotten married in Vegas?! How did it go? Would love to hear experiences...

Really?! How many people were there?
I can totally understand the appeal...
Literally just the two of them. Didn't tell anyone either. Just came back married. I totally get the appeal. I had a big church wedding and it was lovely, but would never do it again. Something so cool and romantic about just eloping and keeping it between the two of you. A

Always find it depends on how close I am to the bride and how bridezilla I am.
My ex SIL was an absolute headcase without a wedding to plan, nevermind as a bride to be- she fell out with me because I couldn’t go to get hen do and tried to make me pay anyway, even had my bfs brother call me to yell at me about it. Then it came to the wedding and I thought things were fine but every time she passed me she gave me the filthiest look she could when she thought I wasn’t looking, Sat me on a table with people I didn’t know and the day was just dull. Thought it would be all over witth after the day, but no- a few weeks later we were all made to sit down and watch the video.

I know someone who’s sister planned a wedding she basically couldn’t afford so all the stress just filtered down. In the end her parents payed a lot and even then it wasn’t enough- my mate had to pay for her sisters hotel the night before (because the wedding was 2 hours from home) as well as accommodation for the night of the wedding. She was a bridesmaid and hair and makeup was extortionate and everyone had to pay for themselves but weren’t allowed to choose how they looked.

The best ones I’ve found are when the bride is just super chill about it all- just want to get married and it’s not all about the showing off. Even better when there’s none or the stuffiness and a more relaxed order of the day.

One of my friends sisters got married a few years ago. It was an extremely lavish wedding. The works. I think they spend about £45K on it in total. Stunning venue, designer wedding dress.

my poor friend was a student at the time and obviously didn’t have a lot of money. She was a bridesmaid but her (very wealthy) sister made her pay for her own hair and make up, that said sister had insisted upon. My friend had also had to fork out a small fortune for the hen that she couldn’t afford. Her boyfriend at the time ending up paying for her because she simply didn’t have the money. I found that pretty shocking. To pay that much on your wedding day but insist your student sister be out of pocket? If I was the husband to be I’d be rethinking things big time.

I love weddings too. I don't get invited to many so that's probably why 😁

The only thing that drives me mad is when the bride and groom choose a completely random venue. I'm going to one soon that is in a random location in the UK. It's not were any family lives. Not where the bride or groom live. There is absolutely no connection to the location whatsoever, they just liked the venue. This means the entire wedding party and all guests will have to travel and stay overnight (2 nights realistically because it is still quite far away). It's a massive expense to everyone and as it's in the UK we'll be expected to go.

I had a couple of friends that got married in Vegas. They were in their 50's and it was a second wedding for both of them so they wanted something fun. They went to Vegas on their own and had Elvis officiate. It was very sweet actually. Vows like 'do you promise not to step on his blue suede shoes?' etc etc. We saw the whole thing because there was a web cam set up so everyone from home could watch. They then went on a massive holiday.

Not a fan. It's alot of money just for one day. Seems like alot of stress to figure out who to invite and not invite and dealing with the aftermath of that....expecting people to shell out alot of money etc. That money could be saved up for a deposit on a house instead.....something practical.
