First of all full disclosure, until about 6 years ago I was an officer with Northumbria Police of 20 years standing so absolutely I have a dog in this race. With regard to hypocrites like CRM and Thiswillbefun I will say this. The last major investigation I was involved in was a case codenamed Operation Sanctuary. The details of the investigation and convictions really are too unpleasant for a showbiz forum on a Sunday morning, but suffice it to say some of the things I saw will haunt me for a long time, quite possibly the rest of my life.
In short the group we were investigating were best described as politically inconvenient and real obstacles were put in our way both formally and within that community. I’m talking about political pressure to let it lie, to endemic victim blaming by mostly females. I even on one occasion had the politely as possible tell a community leader who was supposed to be a religious man to go duck himself when he suggested financial compensation to the hundreds of victims to “ protect the reputation of the families”. The most strident was a “student community group” who actually wanted anyone involved in the investigation disciplined, sacked or even prosecuted for harassment. A few months after the convictions that same group organised a very similar Take Back the Night march to protest the polices failures to protect women from abuse. And this was the point when I realised you can’t reason with fanatics who believe they have moral certainty.
