I believe the factories in those TikTok’s are actually the ones that produce the fakes, inc. ‘super fakes’ or ‘1:1 fakes’ and they are thinly disguised ads to sell these fakes directly to customers. They are claiming that even Hermes bags are made in China. I don’t believe that for a minute.
Absolutely agree - Hermes as an example has a number of factories spread throughout France, and their artisans are trained extensively. Is there a markup on bags etc? Absolutely - but authentic Birkins and Kellys aren't getting cranked out in China and finished off in France. Even getting the bag spa, your bag is shipped off to France to get seen to.
I do believe there are a number of brands would have comparable outputs from Chinese factories, but even the quality of leathers etc has to be thought about.

I wasn’t aware of the market for super fakes until recently. I found a subreddit where people get really obsessive about it.

It’s called r/RepladiesDesigner if anyone’s interested (in snooping, not buying!). These women are spending serious money on designer super fakes with zero thought for the fact they could be inadvertently helping to fund drug cartels and organised crime groups.

Personally if I only had mid-market money for a bag (actually there’s no “if” about it in my case 😅) I’d rather buy from a mid-market brand than support the counterfeit industry.

I’ve been really happy with my purchases from Strathberry and Coach, and I have a bag winging its way to me from Songmont as we speak. It’s the Song bag, which to me looks like a cross between an Hermes Picotin and a Lindy, without being an overt copy of either IYSWIM.

As much as I’ve always wanted an LV I’m not sure I’ll ever save up for one. Just seems insane to spent £1.5k minimum for a bag. It’s just so much money.

I agree. I'm sometimes worried about taking my strathberry on a night out, nevermind a bag that's over 1k 😂 i think mid range is a great level in terms of quality and price. I don't see how you could get much better quality for a higher price and that's what matters to me

Exactly! All I hear about Chanel and LV is that quality is dropping, whereas Strathberry make their bags in Spain and the leather is beautiful. I’d rather have 3-4 mid-range bags than one from a luxe brand tbh.

What do we all think about these Chinese TikTok’s ‘exposing’ the luxury market. Apparently the majority of the bag is made in China and finished off in Italy so it can be sold as ‘made in Italy’? And the prices are ridiculously inflated? I know they would be inflated some amount but not to this extent.
You should read Deluxe, from Dana Thomas. It came out in 2007, mentions the same thing and more. That prices are so inflated isn't new.

Sooo many thoughts on it!! Firstly, this content is propaganda that exists because of an imminent/newly established trade war. Yes some of it is funny, but also… propaganda is not (always?) true. A lot of people are relishing this as an opportunity to consume at levels they haven’t been able to before - whether that’s wealth signifiers or volume.

Dana Thomas’ books on luxury fashion are worth reading for anyone interested in the margins and the ickiness behind it all. It’s like business x real housewives, so not a dry read.

The LV capucines from the cherries collection is so cute. The cherries have faces. I'd have loved that as a child millionaire. Haha

Has anyone got a Demelier New York bag? I want a new bag I know they are quite different but I'm deciding between a Mulberry Alexa and a Demelier.

They’ve been on my radar for a while but tbh I don’t particularly love any of the designs enough to pull the trigger. My favourite is the new Hudson tote in chocolate suede which looks really lovely. I’ve heard the quality isn’t amazing but they also apparently do lifetime repairs. I saw a TikTok recently where someone bought a damaged bag on Vinted and then, after contacting Demellier about a repair, got it replaced! Which bag are you thinking?

As for Mulberry, they priced me out years ago and I just can’t spend four figures on a bag. I really like the new Maggie bag but it’s over £1000 FFS.

I’m the same on the Demellier. And Mulberry, tbh. I really like the new large Amberley satchels - esp the navy blue one.

My issue is that I need a bag with a decent cross body drop as I can’t carry it in my hand / perched on my shoulder and it just means I’m forever looking at the same styles.

It was this one I was considering in either black or tan.

Yes the Mulberry prices are crazy I think they usually have a sale in June so I might hold off.

An unusual buy for me but I absolutely fell in love (definitely nostalgia as my Nan had similar as a kid...not branded!). Used as a perfect beach bag on a recent holiday (as per photo haha)

Does anyone have a Le Pliage pouch? I’m looking at it online for a city break I have coming up but wondering how practical it’ll actually be. I’ll buy a strap to wear crossbody but as there’s not a store near me I can’t look at it to work it out.

Are these the small make up bags that went kind of viral being worn crossbody? I’ve seen people wearing them and they’re really small. If you’re a small bag person it’ll be fine, but personally I can’t travel light so I think they’re pretty useless.
