Deactivating/Deleting Social Media

I went down a rabbit hole this weekend looking at all my old statuses on facebook since 2007, it was weird going back in time but what struck me was how cringe I was in the early days when facebook was all about status updates rather than ads and videos. I posted hundreds and hundreds of times about the weather, being bored, moaning about bus drivers, moaning about uni, ahaha, I'm like, why on earth was I moaning so much, every thought was posted. I've deleted them now as I feel awkward about over 15 years worth of comments sitting on a server to be read, (nothing bad but just so cringe), and I'm still contemplating ditching facebook altogether but it is useful for finding out about local news and events so I may continue to keep it as something to observe rather than post much on. Notably in the past 5 years I barely posted anything, probably because now facebook is all about scrolling past the ads and pages rather than reading what your friends are actually up to. I've had it since 2007 and facebook is trash now. It used to be like an open diary for your friends but it's not like that anymore.

I was an early adopter of FB but got rid of it over a decade ago. I also recall ye olde myspace.
I can see it's uses but strongly disliked everything about it especially the front end.
I suppose msg boards can be classed as social media and I still use those.
I've been told by a couple of people who should know that industry based studies were being carried out years ago re addiction issues.
I personally call it the weaponisation of likes/dislikes and the compulsion to overshare turgid/achingly dull stuff.
I've never wanted to follow anyone tbh. I'm not just saying that either. I've zero interest in it.
I strongly resent the way that FB has got involved in VR and you have to be a FB user to use a certain headset. It's stopped me dead from using VR and I like tech stuff. Not that the alien guy cares.
Wasn't one of FB's early incarnations to rate "Hot gurls"? Speaks volumes IMHO.
One of their cutting edge VR apps was something along the lines of "Hot tub party".
Sophomoric bilge.

People still photograph their mundane meal to put on social media. Baffling. Here is the egg and cress sandwich I had at this cafe for lunch. Weird.

My statuses make me wanna disappear they're so embarrassing. But that was kind of what Facebook was about, as cringeworthy as we were, it was for sharing our thoughts with our friends. Like you say now it's all ads and crappy memes and I only keep it so I can keep in touch with family as we all live quite far apart. Sadly, every social media platform has become the same. On Instagram I don't even see my friend's posts anymore it's just ads and people I don't even follow. Boring and not what it was made for, I'd rather read cringe crap about the weather than see ad after ad.

Instagram is slowly heading the way of Facebook (mixed with tiktok). I do wonder if in a few years I will still have it.

The other cringe Facebook thing is people treat it like school holiday reports back when we were kids and give way too much info (e.g. I did this, then I did that, then we did this). Or worse, post loads of photos each day they are on holiday

I'd be quite happy to delete FB but my shop page still works quite well with customers. It's hard to get the word out about products/sales etc without using social media

Do you remember Facebook back in 2007 where you had network pages? You could chat to others in the network say from your home town etc without being friends. My friend joined the Aussie network before she went travelling there.

What annoys me about Facebook is you can unfollow all the fan pages and groups you have ever followed and still your feed is crammed with suggested posts so we will never get just our friends on the feed any more. Currently I'm getting horse hoof trimming videos and eyebrow waxing posts all the time 😅

Mines full of suggested posts from dull man's cub 😆 I've not posted on mine for years but have kept it for the memories and my girls dance school puts updates and reminders

If you like horse hoof trimming videos, you might like to watch Baumgartner Restoration (if you haven't already). I find his videos have a nice pace to them and his voice is relaxing. It's very satisfying seeing him completely restore an old painting and the way he matches the colours is just incredible.

Has anyone got any of the new waves of 'non smart' phones? I keep seeing adverts for the Light Phone on social media (ironically). It looks really good, only has the bare functions that we 'need' from a phone and I am really intrigued. But wondering if it's actually any good

I own a 3G dumb phone. You can text and make phone calls. All I want and need.

I have to say last year I deleted FB and Insta and it’s the happiest I’ve ever been. I don’t see unnecessary nonsense from people I don’t know or barely know and the conscious/subconscious comparisons are no more. I do use TikTok but block the people I don’t wanna see and I don’t follow a single account and don’t allow a single person to follow me either, I block and remove them all. I think in another couple of years people won’t be sharing quarter of their lives on these platforms, it’ll be used for selling only and it’s already going that way. It’s toxic in my opinion and children below 16 shouldn’t be allowed access period, it’s more harm than good at their young age.

I want to delete Facebook but the kids schools and clubs all use it for information! How would I go about getting the information needed without facebook. Gone are the days of paper newsletters and notes

Omg my old messages to my now husband when we were 16 and 17 are cringe. I can't believe he didn't leave me 🤣
