Also last Friday on C4 unreported world was on the Kenyan Pastor who convinced over 400 of his congregation to starve themselves to death the other month. Spoiler alert - he was still alive and they arrested him

I saw trailers for that and wanted to watch it but couldn't bear much more of this tit because of the ongoing news, so much violence and brutality everywhere. But hopefully at some stage I'll be mentally ready for it!

It’s only 30 mins, it’s just a classic narc luring people to do what they say.

Some groups try and wiggle out of the cult label by saying they're not a cult cos they're not secretive about what they do but the key is - are they a totalist organisation? So for example, the labour or green parties are a broad church, you can just be a member and put your cross in the box at election time or you can be very involved at local level, leafleting, door knocking, involved in community initiatives, standing for election, the full shebang. But you're both members of the party and it doesn't have to leak over into other aspects of your life. It doesn't dictate how to be in a relationship, how to educate your kids or what characteristics to cultivate in your life. It doesn't tell you what to think beyond expecting you to generally agree with the aims of the party but there's a great deal of leeway within that too. You can be further to the left or right of it. You can try and push for more progressive policies or urge caution and a more central stance. You can disagree with those in leadership roles.

None of that is possible in a cult. It is a totalist organisation that will demand or forbid behaviours. It is absolutist. There's no personal interpretation allowed. There's no questioning of leadership. And where there isn't a named leader/s, the organisation itself will be in that role.

Something I've found helpful in distinguishing between cult and crackpot but harmless fringe groups.

So I watched something on Amazon about Twin Flames and now there’s a much better mini series doc on Netflix. Christ this guy is insane, total puppet master

I don’t get a handle on whether he even believes it himself, I think he’s actually that much of a psychopath that he doesn’t care that it looks like he’s making it up for money

Is it worth watching the Amazon one? I’m currently watching the Netflix one and horrified esp that it’s still very active and Jeff 😡

Their response:

It is so revealing to watch how they manipulate their followers over time. As it got towards the end I was half expecting Jeff to reveal that the sperm donor would need to be just him and the women would all need to sleep with him. Thank god that didn’t happen.
The whole thing with the genders and transitioning was horrific

Someone who works for me grew up in one of the cults mentioned. She is one of the most resilient young women I’ve ever met. Leaving is a huge deal, she’s essentially cut herself off from a large, warm and close (if cult-loving) family permanently.

I try not to pry but occasionally she comes out with the most wild stuff, usually due to having zero popular culture exposure growing up.

I can relate! I left a cult at 21. No exposure to music, tv, newspapers radios etc. also not allowed outside friends etc. none of it struck me as odd until I left and saw ‘ normal’ life.
Even to this day, 20 years later, I’m totally fascinated by the mundane and minutiae of normal existence. Just enjoy seeing how people live their lives.

I watched the true flame one the other night, Wtaf? When he was saying his true flame doesn't want sex and he just keeps pushing her until she agrees, and she sits their smiling and agreeing. And then saying he doesn't care she basically gained weight and was less attractive. The guy is a nut job.what are people's thoughts on her?

How they manipulated women into cutting their hair, taking male names etc. i can't get my head round it.
