What's everyone's opinion on Jehovahs witnesses?
I think it varies, I have a colleague at work, who I also consider as a friend. I worked with her for 5 years before I found out she was JW. She knows I’m an atheist, and it’s never been an issue. We have many long chats about it and she asks me questions and I ask her. She takes a light touch on ‘witnessing’ and says all things are up to the individual. This to me is the perfect balance. I have no problem with people having their faith but when they prey on the vulnerable or try to shove it down your face too, then that’s the issue for me. From what I see of her behaviour, I have no red flags.
But I am aware there is another extreme side of the JWs

Beachbody is definitely MLM. But they’re all a bit cultish anyway.

JW, it’s a tough one for me. I have family who are JW. They came to it later in life. As such their kids did go to services when they were younger but once they had the choice, they didn’t. They are very much of the opinion we chose to join, they have the right to choose also. They came to our church wedding, even though we said we understood if they felt that they couldn’t. Their response was we are family, why would we miss your wedding? They’re absolutely lovely people. As are the people I’ve met from their congregation.

I guess it’s like all religions, there’s a spectrum. From those who believe and follow but still have a foot in the real world, to those who wont go near anyone who is not like them or spread hatred towards anyone who doesn’t believe.

Cults, I feel there is in general no spectrum of belief. You’re either all in or you’re not.

Was it a bit MLM?

It’s a cult as far as I’m concerned. Also they keep getting the end of the world date wrong.
Although talking about the end of the world, I do find it hilarious that they have loads of sleeping bags and camping equipment for when the end comes 😆

I've seen posts vaguely on here about the Plymouth brethren, are they a religion or a cult or in between? Interested to know more about them if anyone knows anything (more fun to read people's opinions than to google)
They built a church? temple? ..Anyway place of worship in Salisbury in the 90s/early 00s. Saw the women occasionally in supermarkets/around town (they wear little headscarves). They buy houses in the area (they bought an acquaintance's old house).

I think the awful thing about JWs is the no blood transfusions. Some people have let themselves and tried to allow their kids to die needlessly.

I love this thread. I like the pad cast Sounds Like A Cult which is really good at deconstructing ‘normal’ seeming groups and showing how cult-like language seeps in to all sorts of places you might not expect.
See, this is one of my biggest fears, I have MH problems and at times it's been so difficult for me to attend group meetings/therapies etc because I'm worried it's going to be a cult in disguise!!!

I love the episode of Schitt's Creek where they go to the exercise class that turns out to be a cult. 😂

Telltale Atheist on YouTube covers Jehovah's Witnesses. They shun people who leave, so parents will cut out their kids if their kids leave the church. He uses the BITE model to assess whether something is a cult. They also cover up a lot of CSA cases, covering the perpetrators. I'm in the camp they are a cult.

Also from near S’bury. Their daughters attended the same secondary school as me and would wear the headscarves. They had a very peculiar surname and everyone would call them that but used it also to refer to anyone of that religion 😂 I think they were quite nice but got a far bit of special treatment. JW kids also attended the school and sat out every assembly. Our old neighbours were Mormons and moved to Utah years ago, they were super lovely people!

I think it’s disturbing how cult-like things like MLMs are nowadays (in fact all of the core MLMs came from Mormonism), and even things like Peloton that basically get you to prove your allegiance by spending huge sums of money.

I listened to a very dry maths podcast and they were discussing Ancient Greek cults and they said it was the control of food and sleep that were hallmarks of a cult. But, in modern day times, I would say it’s more: the recruitment of others and financial contributions.

Leah remini did a good series on scientology
Do you know what platform it is on? I've never seen it!

There were a couple of PBs at my school - they weren’t allowed to be seen eating which is a bit weird.
There was a PB in our year who had to go home for lunch every day because of this. She also was forbidden to watch TV so if we ever watched anything in class she had to leave.
Strangest thing she told us was that PB usually live in detached houses because they couldn't use water/sewage systems that outsiders used. If someone lived in a semi detached or terrace it would be because their neighbours were family.

The JW parents I know have not cut out their children for leaving? I’m not criticising what you say, just saying what I know from my own family members.

I guess it depends on where they are based, I know American JWs tend to be a bit more into the shunning. There are sneaky work around for stuff like blood transfusions for kids. so it might be they work around it in the case of shunning, too.
A relative of mine converted when she met a JW and nearly died because she refused a blood transfusion. :/

I had to look that up, I'm not familiar with it. It's here, if anyone else wants to read.
Sorry - yes, I should have linked!

She posts a lot on twitter and links to her podcast on there, I need to find the time to listen to it. She's currently investigating links between the LA police dept and scientology. Brave lady

@pumbilical cord i don’t think it’s an American thing, Ive heard shunning stories from uk ex JWs. Like I said a few posts back, I think there’s a spectrum of belief. As an example one of my relatives congregation knocked at my door. When I answer i always say ‘ oh, you’ll know X and X, they’re relatives of mine’ . Then we’ll usually have a bit of a chat, sometimes about how we mutually respect each others beliefs and that’s the end of it. However this one guy implied that my relatives weren’t acting as true JW by not actively encouraging us to attend. I told one of my relatives about this, she rolled her eyes and said ‘Oh, him! Ignore him, he thinks he’s something special!’ 😆

I think I watched it on sky or Netflix but this was years ago. Looks like it is on amazon prime & YouTube though

Thanks for creating this thread. I watch true crime and follow a channel on YouTube she has made a few videos on different cults. She did one I’ve never heard of in Australia called The Family. It’s a long video and can be triggering in places 😳

Is that the same as the one that has a Netflix documentary on it?
