Just wasted a solid hour browsing the M&S Xmas party food site and adding stuff to my trolley of dreams that of course I’ll never checkout. I’m on £237 so far and am very excited for FOOD I’LL NEVER BE ABLE TO AFFORD. Fucks sake 😜😬

I’m loving the idea of a North Pole box on 1st December 😍

I always thought what’s the point in Christmas Pyjamas on Christmas Eve I want the kids to wear them more than once!!

I always buy what I can in the sale in January, cards, wrapping paper, PJ’s etc because I don’t want my kids to miss out but I don’t have a big Christmas budget.
One of my kids is still wearing his elf pjs from last Xmas 🤣 He gives no shits and nor do I.

This thread is fab 😊 especially hearing what everyone is doing for others.

One year, a couple of girls in my city set up a 'fill a shoebox' style thing for women who would be spending Christmas in a women's refuge. Many times they flee with nothing and kind people often donate for the little ones but the girls wanted the women themselves to have something nice just for them to open up. It wasn't about buying new but having a look in your cupboards for 'nice' toiletries you could donate. I asked my uni year group if they wanted to get involved and I've never seen anything like it. So much was donated- gift sets, brand new make up, 'treat' shampoos etc. I couldn't physically move the amount of stuff donated 💖

If you do want to buy for kids, a good idea is to get a little something for the 12-18 age range as people often pick up for little ones but there isn't as much donated for older kids.

I used to work in MH and dementia wards in hospitals and it absolutely broke my heart seeing the difference between patients who had families that could afford (and, to be honest, those who could actually be bothered 😔) to bring in nice shampoos and wash bits. We'd have to wash some old ladies with the hand wash at the sink or the hospital emollient 😓 We'd try and 'borrow' a little something nice for those who didn't have from those who did. I don't know what hospitals will be like accepting bits this year but if you have a friend or family member who works in dementia wards or MH, might be worth asking if they're accepting. Body spray, hairspray, mini tooth pastes, Bobby pins- they were so useful as everyone deserves to feel a bit special 💖

Just to add- if you are donating to food banks I know supermarkets often have places you can drop off what you buy in store. These food banks are often the big and well known ones that users have to have a referral for (from Gp, social workers etc.). For some people, there's a huge stigma attached to having to ask for a referral so they'd rather go without. If you can spare tyre extra time, it's worth checking out local organisations that do similar but are outreach or drop in based. That way, it helps those missed and 'hard to reach' groups 💖

Reading this thread has convinced me to decorate the house this year for Christmas. Normally I don't bother as it's just me but a bit of sparkly cheer at the end of what's been a less-than-stellar year is just the ticket.

Well it’s 6 months until Boxing Day. 😬

but are things going to be different this year?

If you travel to see family are you planning to arrange these trips?

Will it be smaller celebrations and less gifts?

Are you preparing in advance incase we get a second wave in the autumn that leaves Santa in the Nightingale on Christmas Eve 😐

I’m loving this thread. I start to shop towards the end of the month after my stepchildrens birthdays.

Our traditions:

1st December: North Pole box. I do this as then we get a full month’s worth of use out of the things in it. Usually consists of Christmas PJs, T-shirt’s, books, advent calendars, cups etc. Either bought in the sale or used each year as my youngest knows I do this. The older two are 12/14 now anyway.

Christmas Eve: The youngest and I go to my mums to have a pre christmas day with my mum and sister. Nice food and present swapping. Partner works half a day and wraps my presents that he’s told me all month he’s not got me 🙈😂 he’s a good one!

Christmas Day: Croissants for breakfast, stockings upstairs in bed, youngest opens his pressies, we have dinner early afternoon and then get cleared away for round two for my stepchildren. Then we spend the rest of the day playing with things and have snacks for tea.

Boxing Day: Chilled morning and then afternoon/evening party with family. Not sure what’s happening with that this year yet!

I make my youngest an activity advent. Each day he has something to do. Sometimes this is really simple such as have a nice hot choc, watch a Christmas film, read a Christmas book etc. I try and do one “big” thing each year involving us all. Last year it was the Polar Express. This year will be a challenge thinking of ideas! My youngest is now 8 so I need to start thinking of older ideas as he gets a bit embarrassed if we happen to bump into Santa when he’s visiting any shops/places we’re at 😂

So would love to know how you keep the Christmas spirit going with kids growing up? I want to make some new traditions!

Last year was the worst Christmas of my life, my mum died a few months before and we made this big effort and plans to try and make it as nice as possible but ended up sitting around feeling totally miserable. It was so horrible that I feel like it’s put me off Christmas forever now. We said after that we would go abroad this year but with Covid we’re not sure about that now. I normally get so excited about Christmas, I just heard a Christmas song on Instagram and I feel fed up now!
I will refrain from sprinkling anymore festive sparkle on this thread...sorry! 😬
bit late to comment on this, and apologies if someone else has provided similar words, but if it helps any, I lost my dad very unexpectedly two weeks before Christmas 6 years ago.
That first Christmas was horrific. I gave all the presents I’d bought, wrapped and got so excited about for him (one of them was rugby tickets for us both to go to a game as he loved the rugby and it was “our thing”) to my brother. Cried as he opened them as I just kept thinking how they were meant for him and how horrible this whole situation was. We all tried to make it the best day as much as possible, but in reality it sucked. The worst Christmas of my life. Truthfully, the next couple of Christmas weren’t much better either.
However, fast forward 6 years, and I get excited about Christmas again. Granted, there is always a painful degree of sadness that he isn’t here, and the day itself feels so different now. I’ll be shopping and think “oh, that’s a great present for dad...” and then remember. But you really do eventually adjust and learn to enjoy it again and find some Christmas spirit. For now though, allow yourself to not like Christmas and have no festive cheer or spirit. I genuinely think my bah humbug phase helped me process it all/deal with it a little. Hopefully you’ll find your cheer/spirit in time again too 🙂

I was made redundant at the start of lockdown so I’m going to try to be creative with gifts; no idea what though!
Hopefully I can also get a job that isn’t retail so I can have the time off over Christmas - it’s my favourite time of year and for the past 7 I’ve been either working Christmas Eve and then knackered on Christmas Day or working Boxing Day which just sucks all the joy out of your life (being told you’ve ruined someone’s Christmas because you can’t do refunds on Boxing Day? Highlight of my year 😔)

ETA: the title was meant to be ‘Come all ye faithful’ but autocorrect had other ideas! 😂

My husband thinks I’m deranged for even thinking about this early (every year) but Christmas is my favourite and I’m determined to make this a good one after 2020 being the year that it is. Lots of quality family time, all the food we like to eat, thoughtful gifts, and less pressure to do everything because we could be locked down again 🥴

Ive never been a member on MN but have always loved the Christmas threads, save for the inevitable snark that creeps in from time to time 😂

Hoping this thread can be a judgement-free space for my fellow Christmas lovers to have general chat, share worries and excitement. Has anyone started or finished their shopping? Is your menu planned? Do you enjoy putting stockings together? Are you someone who keeps the same decorations each year or do you have a theme that changes?

I’ll start... LO gifts mostly bought. I don’t go overboard (anymore 🥴) so a couple of things on the wish list that I’m waiting to by and a few stocking fillers. Have husband and extended family to buy for but have ideas lists so hoping to get it all done before December. The menu is the same every year- simple and easy as I don’t go for anything that requires someone to be in the kitchen all of Christmas Day. Especially when childhood is so short. Stockings are my favourite thing to do! Love finding little trinkets to put in. I don’t go for tat even though kids love it! We have enough from party bags and I’ve seen how little it gets played with long term. We have the same decorations every year but add a couple of new baubles. Will splash out and get some new table linen this year but nothing OTT.

I’d love to be one of those people who dresses the whole house but we keep it pretty simple. Maybe one day. Must admit I’m already very excited about the prospect of being home over the holiday and I’m trying to not feel disappointed that most activities will probably be cancelled.

I’m thinking more austerity, more home made stuff....somehow it just feels more appropriate. Especially as I’ve been furloughed and had the chance to pick all our red currants that normally go over.
I’m mulling over something I can make from all the hundreds of pages of zoom quiz answers.

We usually do reverse advent calendar for the food bank- we do it in November so we can donate in December- make it last 25 days and the idea is you add an item a day. Not sure if that’s been mentioned already!

This Xmas is exciting as we have a newborn but she won’t be big enough to understand next year will be the one! I may buy a father Xmas suit as this was a tradition when I was growing up- visit from Santa on Christmas Day!

I’ve pre ordered the friends advent calendar on amazon but with being so busy with bub I reckon I’ll forget I’ve ordered it til it turns up 😂

We will most likely be spending it with my family because my fiance's family are in Europe (we're in North America) and with everyone predicting a second wave in the winter, we don't want to risk it.

I will try to cook the entire Christmas dinner this year for the first time ever, which will be interesting. We are usually in the Caribbean during the holidays and not cooking at all, so I'm looking forward to that.

Anyone have suggestions for good sides with the Turkey? Should we have a roast instead or along with the turkey? And dessert?
Roast with the turkey. So all your roast trimmings 🤤

Our go to sides are:

Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Honey roast parsnips
Boiled carrots and broccoli
Cauliflower cheese
Spiced red cabbage
Sprouts with bacon and garlic butter
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings

Reading these posts I have now decided that our new tradition will be a Chinese takeaway on Christmas Eve. I also really want to do matching Christmas even pyjamas but my husband said he’ll only do that if we can do naked Christmas Day 😕 Xmas pjs just for me then!

I posted a little while back on this thread that I was dreading this Christmas and the past few have been pretty sad and gloomy, each one seemed to get progressively worse and I thought my Christmas spirit was well and truly gone.

But I think it’s edging back. Like nbt above I’m just feeling a bit happier today. I kind of feel awful saying that in the current climate but I think it’s the weeks of low expectations and not looking forward to it that have kind of helped me go sod it im going to try and enjoy it. Nothing extravagant but I’m going to spend December watching Christmas films and eating a lot of chocolate and just trying to be cosy and content as much is possible.

I think I’m looking forward to it because my brother is coming to spend it with us. We lost both out parents in the past 2 years and we’ve not spent Xmas together since we were teenagers. My brother broke up with his girlfriend this year and doesnt have anywhere else he could really go. He thought he would be in the way spending it us with me and my husband & kept saying no you don’t really want me there, but I really do. And now he’s agreed and my heart feels warm. It feels really special to think of us spending a Christmas Day together.

I’ve had a really great idea today too. I’m going to get me, my husband and my brother matching Christmas pyjamas. They’re both going to hate it and that makes me happy 🤣🤣 cant wait to see their faces and hope we all laugh! 🤣

I was hoping to travel back to South Africa to see my parents and sister for Christmas & New Year. But given all the confusion and bother, there seems no point, and certainly not worth the risk or worry. (At least we have Skype to stay in touch)

As a consequence, I guess I will spend the holiday here at home with my partner (assuming we both stay covid-free), and just remain optimistic.

I always prefer the run up to Christmas than the actual day tbh. I Usually spend Xmas eve with my boyfriend and his family and then travel down at night so I wake up at my parents on xmas morning - can’t see that changing even with local lockdowns. Depends on my shifts at work too, I’ve been lucky and had xmas day and Boxing Day off for the last few years so I’ll probably end up working both

Will be a small one for us this year. Ive already squirrelled some kids gifts away from sales so wont have much to buy. This pandemic has really woken me up about financial security and what things really matter to us as a family. It’s been a hard time but some blessings have come from it. Hopefully I stick to my resolve and don’t try to compensate for this year by buying more 😉

Love Christmas and these are our traditions, apologies if its a bit long just get a bit over excited haha!!

We have 3 kids and the eldest helps a lot more with decorating but the younger two are already starting to mention Christmas seeing the little bits and pieces in the shops etc. We always decorate on a Friday , I go a bit overboard with the decorations but its my favourite part of Christmas. Love family time after the tree & decs go up with just the Christmas lights on watching a Christmas movies with a nice hot chocolate. What are your must watch Christmas movie(s)?

We have done a version of Elf on the Shelf since eldest was very small (10 years+) and he arrives on 1st of December with advent calendars and usually the Christmas Jumpers / clothes to wear on the run up to Christmas - does nice and naughty things all the way through till Christmas Eve.

We usually have some time on the run up baking and making Christmas goodies and deliciousness - Christmas Cake, biscuits, sweet mince pies and then we bake and freeze what we can for NYE party - possibly not this year though! Usually we do pantomime and Christmas markets and fairs on the run up to Christmas but they both will not happen this year due to COVID, one weekend we do go to the local garden centre and pick a Christmas tree decoration to come home and hang on the tree. We also may have a Christmas day out, in the past we have done winter wonderland, railway museum Santa special, safari park Christmas celebration and last year we did Alice in wonderland light festival.

On Christmas Eve we have a day of watching Christmas tv, fit in a Christmas craft if there is time and make sure the house is all clean and tidy for Santa coming. In the late afternoon we visit family for nibbles and hot chocolate and whilst there we track santa on norad. On the way home we look at Christmas lights on the trip home. When we get home our elf has "gone to help Santa" and left behind one present (Christmas Eve Pjs and usually a small chocolate treat), although our eldest is older and no longer believes the elf still leaves her something last year we had different flavoured hot chocolate with candy canes, cream and marshmallows to share once the others were in bed! Santa has a special plate and mug for his treats and drink - this is put out, stockings are hung, we only put out the santa stop here sign on christmas eve, sprinkle reindeer food and then we all pile into our bed to read the night before Christmas before attempting to get the kids to sleep haha!

Whilst waiting for the kids to settle husband and I usually prep as much as I can for dinner the next day we usually have it with 13 of us together so we all take responsibility for part of it and then come together at whoever's house is hosting that year. We have simple breakfast on the day, big 3 course christmas lunch which is usually starter, lunch then dessert about 3 hours later haha! After lunch we swap gifts with family and usually play a silly game or two.

Boxing day is our day where we usually stay in pyjamas and relax we play with toys, eat chocolate and go nowhere. My parents usually come over and dad cooks boxing day curry with leftover meats for us all. Then we will have buffet style tea late in the day - cold meats, cheese and crackers etc.

Sooooo excited now hahah! Love reading other people's traditions - what are yours? xx

It’s always one extreme to the other for me. I either slob in PJ’s or I get all dressed up. Either way, we go nowhere and see no one 😂
Same as others, I always had new pyjamas on christmas eve but never christmas ones as a child. Then a new outfit on Christmas Day. We have done Christmas Pjs only the last 2 or 3 year but they then wear them on the run up to Christmas the following year, apart from my eldest who has been wearing last years christmas pj bottoms since about April - she says she is keeping the spirit alive (and they are comfortable :ROFLMAO: ). Still do a nice outfit on christmas day for us all.
