When I was young, you used to be able to find the exact time at any moment by dialling a number for something called TIM, which was also called The Speaking Clock. You would hear a recorded voice saying something like 'at the third stroke, it will be ten thirty-nine and twenty-three seconds precisely.' Then there would be three evenly-spaced 'strokes' - beeping noises called pips. On the last one of those, it would be the time that had just been stated.

We’ve got a giant red clock in our livingroom and it’s not changed. What a ball ache. I said to me fella let’s just leave it till October and it’ll go back to the normal time (don’t quote me on that I’m not 100 percent how it works hehe)

There's only been one set time for the whole country since the 1850s. Before that, town clocks might be set to slightly different times in different places. It was the development of a national railway system and the need for accuracy in its timetables that established the need for clocks to be in agreement across the nation.
