It's called home equity release and it's not always a great idea. Good piece on the pros and cons from Age UK here: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/money-legal/income-tax/equity-release/With regards to inheritance, am I correct in thinking you can just sign your home/assets over to the bank (or another more specialist company) and they’ll give you the cash, allow you to stay in your home till you die and then you can just spend all your money?
Or have I completely made that up
My mum-in-law had 2 children in her first marriage and then my husband a bit later on in life. She often tells me that if she'd had my husband first, she'd never had had any more children, because he was a nightmare child and quite often enjoys telling me he is still a nightmare son now - as if I didn't know! It's all done in jest, with love, but yeah the thought of a mini him sounds terrible.Miniature versions of anyone sound like a plot for a horror film to me!
Yesss! Loads of the women I work with are saying how they're still paying off last years christmas presents for their kids as they get everything on salary sacrifice through work. Mind blown!Anyone else feeling particularly gleeful that they don’t have to spend their wages on kid’s presents, or piss around with a plastic elf each night?
I’ll just be over here with my Baileys, pondering how to spend my disposable income, and napping whenever I want
Cor I could come out with a million answers for that question. Top 5 would be: lie in's, being able to eat at nice restaurants not olaces that offer kids menus, not having to spend my money on plastic light up shit, holidays when I want where I want not during school holidays that have a kids club, my house remaining presentable because it isn't covered in kiddy hand prints and crumbs, no soft play, no dealing with other parents, no school ground dramas...I mean thats more than 5 hahaHaven't been on this thread for a while and I've missed it!
Something that will always stick in my mind was a few years ago I told a colleague that my boyfriend and I don't want to get married and especially dont want to have kids, she said 'but what do you have to look forward to in life then?'
And i was actually stuck for an answer cause it shocked me that she said that! Im sure she didn't mean to be rude, she's just completely opposite to me in what she wants and can't comprehend it.
Sometimes on bad mental health days I ask myself that same question though..
However I will 100% never change my mind as I know that I'm making the right decision for me
What a rude woman. You have all the world has to offer!Haven't been on this thread for a while and I've missed it!

Oh yes all these things 1000%!Cor I could come out with a million answers for that question. The lack imagination on that woman! Depending on your (and her) circumstances and relationship, I'd be tempted to reply "early retirement and holidays out of term time" but the LIST of things to enjoy about not having children are as long as my arms.Haven't been on this thread for a while and I've missed it!

I am married and hated all the bloody "events" - it was a drain. And it was all people wanted to talk to me about. I remember saying to my husband "What on earth is my mother going to make conversation about once we are married?!" How sad to think life isn't fun or worthwhile without a handful of "important events"Oh yes all these things 1000%!
I think in the moment I was caught off guard and felt put on the spot infront of a group. Also I think she might have meant like big life events that most people do/have that they seem to plan their whole lives around(engagement, hen do, wedding, baby shower etc)
This.I don’t want them is answer enough. You don’t have to say anything more than that. Imagine if someone who loved cats started on at someone who doesn’t want a cat, they’d look a bit mad. Same with kids. There seems to be an expectation that people, especially women, will want kids. Women who don’t want kids need to be more unapologetically vocal about it.
I've got kids and I'd still be able to easily answer this women's question. Sounds like she's one of these people that thinks their fulfilment can only come from a husband and kids. I love my kids dearly but I still dream of the freedom that I'll have when they are older and we are able to travel, lie in, do what we want when we want.Something that will always stick in my mind was a few years ago I told a colleague that my boyfriend and I don't want to get married and especially dont want to have kids, she said 'but what do you have to look forward to in life then?'
I'm horrified that people think this is an acceptable question to ask. How is it anyone's business?!This.
I refuse to get into any debate or discussion with anyone about why I don't want/have kids. We don't demand this from people who do have children, therefore I'm not wasting my time with anyone who wants to get into this.
I don't see why people think there has to be big events to mark these milestones. I'm engaged and I want to get married but there won't be hen /stag dos as we're not that kind of people. We didn't have an engagement party and when we do get round to getting married, it won't be a big lavish affair, just a small, family only thing. It won't be any less important or meaningful because we didn't spend a fortune paying for hundreds of people we don't know or like to attend!Oh yes all these things 1000%!

I totally agree. I have a friend who tells people she can't have them when they ask this to stop them asking anything else and so that they feel bad. But I've said to her that it's really important to normalise just saying I don't want any.I don’t want them is answer enough. You don’t have to say anything more than that.
