I’m starting to think Call the Midwife is a bizarre money laundering scheme to get money to Dr Turner and the writer.
He’ll have done something heroic in the war no doubt!
Hasn’t there been mention of his shell shock / PTSD in the war and he ended up in an asylum as a result?

I just started watching S13 today. I like Rosalind and Joyce well enough for now and am finding the birth/other stories quite interesting, though a little predictable.
I could do with a bit more background info on the two new recruits.
I also wished that Rosalind got top marks in the exam, that could have created some tension with Joyce. I relate to Rosamund’s lack of confidence and exam stress.
Nurse Crane continues to be my favourite, with her reassuring but no nonsense pep talks. She always knows exactly what to say/do without sugar coating things. Her backstory is one I would love to see.
I also love Sister Monica Joan for all her literary and philosophical quotes. Her backstory would be a fascinating watch. I think she wanted to go to uni but was denied the possibility. I figure she had older brothers who were allowed to go.
Vanessa Redgrave’s narration has definitely taken a turn for the worst, as she sounds really raspy/croaky and just so old!
I find Nancy really annoying, but I think she leaves at some point next season. It is extremely unrealistic that the nuns would let her live in Nonnatus with Colette openly calling her mum.
The characters just generally seem very accepting for the time. I thought the mum of the young lady whose stepfather grape her was definitely going to kick her out.

Jeff/Geoff ( Trixie’s plot device of a brother) also really annoys me. Homosexuality would have just been decriminalised at this point ( a year or so ago) but I don’t believe gay people would be quite so openly camp like he is. I’m sure that even a hint of being gay was a hindrance to getting a job, a flat… as people didn’t become accepting and welcoming overnight once the law changed. I think the nuns, especially the older ones, would definitely have some reservations with him coming to visit so frequently and would make veiled comments about praying for his mortal soul/hating the sin but loving the sinner. Sister Julienne and Sister Monica Joan seem particularly non-judgemental about everything/everyone. Even Sister Veronica seems to not care about people’s sexuality/belifs/behaviour either, or not as much as someone at the time probably would.
I miss Sister Frances a lot! She was so sweet and kind, but without being sappy. She learned from her mistakes, gained confidence in herself and managed to speak up when she needed to. I would watch both her and Nurse Crane ( one of my all-time favourite TV characters) help deliver babies and give advice to people in Poplar all day every day.

I've been watching the earlier episodes from the beginning and there was a storyline in about series 5 or 6 where a male character is married with a baby on the way but is secretly gay. Patsy is very sympathetic to him, but Trixie is very judgemental. I find that weird given that in later series we find out she has a gay brother that she's completely OK about!
Was having this conservation with my husband as we are watching them.back (now at the current series). Theres so much that doesnt sit right:

One thing that feels true to the time period is when the younger Turner children wear costumes for an event, the boy will be a doctor and the two girls nurses, then for the moon landing, Teddy was an astronaut and May and Angela were something else.
And in a fairly recent series, one of the nuns/midwives asks a girl what she wants to be when she grows up and says a nurse or a teacher.
I can’t ever remember Trixie mentioning siblings before Geoffrey turns up. I thought they did a good job showing some of the racism when Lucille arrived on the scene. If I recall correctly there are some mums who won’t be examined by her or don’t take her advice until someone white tells them exactly the same thing.
The Patsy and Delia storyline felt very true to the time, so they can be faithful to attitudes of the past, but I guess TV nowadays has to be woke and inclusive, irrespective of the era the program is set in.

The actress that played Barbara was in Legends on Netflix recently, she was really good.
Onto Season 14 now, and am hoping that the new postulant, Catherine, is going to be more interesting than Rosalind and Joyce. Even Joyce’s storyline involving her cousin was resolved really quickly and in a super boring/predictable way.
The new recruit seems anxious about midwifery, but seems very kind ( she has a lovely smile) and a very natural beauty, like Sister Frances. The actress ( Ella Bruccoleri, I think) was unrecognisable at the wawards ceremony.
Trixie seems to be considered the pretty one, but I find her beauty very artificial. I don’t think her hair is naturally platinum blonde, and it often looks overly styled and her makeup is quite bold/obvious.
Sister Catherine reminds me a little of Val, who also just had this radiance that didn’t require any/much makeup. I loved Val and the overarching plot of her last season was just so so good. I miss characters and storylines like that. I got chills at the reveal and cried when Val attended the trial.

Just finished S14, except for the Christmas special.
It felt like a much older episode, as it was moving, heart-warming and dramatic in moments.
I despair of Nancy, she just seems so disorganised, whether it is regarding wedding planning or taking birth control/knowing when she fell pregnant/how far along she was. At least she had Nurse Crane and Roger to help her through it.
I thought the hearing with Joyce was well done and the whole situation and her fears felt very true to the time. Lucille definitely had some racist families to deal with too, and Cyril and Rosalind having their relationship commented on negatively also felt right for the time period.
I loved Sister Catherine’s jubilant excitement at joining the order ( her smile is just so beautiful!) and loved seeing some familiar faces back at the mother house ( no Sister Frances tough, boo!) and loved seeing the preparations for that, which I don’t think we ever have before. It was so organised compared to Nancy’s messy lack of planning.
The moments with Sister Catherine’s sister Helen, their closeness and conversations about their family made me properly cry. I think Helen is probably a les, as she was wearing a suit and tie during Catherine’s vows to become a nun, and there was mention of their father not approving of her lifestyle. The scene on the beach of them together, dancing and laughing was just perfect.There was also a moment between Sister MJ abd Sister Catherine where they have a really poignant conversation about faith/doubt and it had me sobbing.
Then the very young pregnant teen and her relationship with her parents was very touching too. Rosalindreally stepped up there and I wish we got to see more of that on the show. She’s extremely competent and seems to be gaining confidence, which is great.
The last couple of episodes felt like old Seasons of the show, which was lovely, bar the twee Turners. I am happy May is actually officially part of the family now, that is great for them, but Dr Turner still seems to know about every new disease and has heard of some innovative new cure/medication/treatment that he is going to pioneer in Poplar. Also, I really don’t think Timothy would have time to call home just to congratulate his sister getting adopted, as he is a medical student!
My hope is that Nancy and co go back to Ireland once the baby is well enough to travel, and that Sister Catherine stays at Nonnatus, though I think I’m going to be disappointed and she’s going to stay at the Mother House instead. It’s a shame as I have become very attached to her/her character.
I need more Nurse Crane, especially working with Miss Higgins. Those ladies get stuff done! I loved Nurse Crane’s rage at the messed up Rolodex, that felt very true to character.
I find Geoffrey very unrealistic. What does he do for work again? It just seems so unlikely that he’d be so well-travelled ( wasn’t going anywhere by plane reserved for the rich and famous at this point still?) and knowing a ton about Japanese customs and culture. I knew the vase was going to be repaired that way as soon as Reggie mentioned it.
