I’ve flown Business class a few times and have a flight booked for early next year, all have been Dublin to NYC. It’s totally worth it IMO, the service is excellent and being able to have quiet time and sleep so ur rested on arriving in NYC / at home is so good. Not to mention the food and drink obvs
I understand the preference to have more spends on hol but I include it in our hol budget and we save up. I obvs try to take advantage of the avios points programme and sales etc too.I haven’t flown First but I’ve been on an Emirates A380 and had drinks at the First class bar, sat in the seats, had a look in the shower facilities etc. It’s just incredible. I’d love to do it but not sure I could ever justify the cost.
There were 2 separate incidents close together. One was reported by the staff in Glasgow Hilton who had been serving the crew until the wee hours. The other was security staff screening the crew. Good to know people will speak up IMO.

I’ve flown business on Singapore Airlines a few times. Really makes long haul easy. Not been lucky enough to fly first and have one of the bedrooms
This is true, I’m Crew and I didn’t get on with the Clark’s shoes after wearing them a couple of month, I sold them on eBay for more than double I paid for them
Great thread, I am always fascinated by cabin crew!! I got upgraded to econony plus on my US flight and felt so luxurious so I imagine business and first class would blow my mind haha

One thing I don’t understand is doing cpr on a passenger and then having to strap them into a seat for landing. No there’s automatic cpr machines why dont airlines have it and a way to strap down a person? I’m guessing costs. I know if the first round of cpr isn’t successful then it’s unlikely to be but I can’t imagine what it’s like for cabin crew and let alone family to make an effort and then have to stop for landing and then get them help.
my parents flew BA first class when there was a pricing glitch. It was cheaper for them to fly first class than it was to fly premium economy! They said it was nice but no where near worth the normal price and found emerates business class much better than BA first. I’ve never done anything other than economy but don’t do long haul, I can’t imagine doing long haul in economy.
this is really outing but I flew on a random small airline, I love their honesty compared to other airlines. Other airlines just assigned disabled people window seats and you get the ‘just stay in your seat in an emergency and we will come and help you’. The Other airline said at check in ‘you have a window seat so if there’s an emergency you won’t block anyone’ and then when I was onboard I was told ‘in an emergency stay in your seat, if there’s time we will come back for you‘! I do understand cabin crew didn’t sign up to die but I do find it horrifying that it’s fine to not go back for disabled people if there isn’t time

Etihad is the only commercial airline that has or had The Residence (with a bedroom) - even the most upscale first class cabin of any airline can't compare
Not just the service onboard, but also the service on the ground.
I'm Old, so my time in the Gulf was before Etihad or Emirates, and when Dubai and Abu Dhabi were just other cities like Muscat, Manama and Kuwait City (and my parents knew Iraq before the Revolution, Iran before nationalised oil, and Kuwait before any oil!). The options were Gulf Air or BOAC, then BA; we tended to fly BA as that's who Dad's company had a contract with. I flew BOAC and BA first class but it was mainly more room and better food - I got to take my budgie in the small cage with me too! To and from secondary school in the UK, I flew economy but still got the perk of being escorted past passport control and driven home; my passport, duly stamped, and my bags, through customs without me, would be delivered home while I slept off the jetlag.
I did once fly Concorde home as a sixteen year old and got met at Heathrow by an attendant to carry my hand luggage. A short journey with just enough time to flick through a couple of upmarket glossy mags and eat the excellent food. I think I even got some of the champagne.
Since then, I have been upgraded to business class on the London-Edinburgh route; I think that they felt sorry for me as it was the last leg of a complicated three-leg trip back from Germany as the travel department at St Andrew's House had informed my government agency that the original flights had been cancelled and my lot forgot to book others and to tell me! Nothing like turning up in a small airport in the depths of a foreign country on a public holiday to find out that my flights were cancelled
. Lufthansa were great though, even if the route was interesting with tight links (yay for German efficiency, my bags actually transferred with me, wouldn't expect that in the UK!) and the last leg with BA saw me upgraded after I collapsed over the desk at Heathrow and told the guy my travel saga. The lounge was very welcome, even though I was rather out of place with my jeans and Scotland t-shirt (so my German driver could spot me) amongst all the suits on a weekday.
Edit to add: Lufthansa's short haul internal flights were FAB. The airline had a different name but it was Lufthansa owned and run. The single class seats had much more room than the equivalent UK economy and were leather for a start. Excellent and efficient service too. Perfectly on time so my dash through Munich Airport for a 30 minute change was feasible.

I say again, I love all the stories and sharing of experiences on this thread. In a previous post I said I worked for a major airline for over 20 years. In the travel industry for over 30 years. I have had the privilege of flying both business and first class on numerous occasions, but the majority of time with a caveat: stand-by only depending on aircraft loads. With staff travel tickets, obviously priority went to commercial passengers first before staff (non-revenue) passengers. In the days when I could take my family on staff concession flights it was great. One time I was allowed to take my sister-in-law on a trip to Bangkok. I will never forget her excitement when I told her we had business class seats on the upper deck of a 747 - she said she never knew/noticed planes had 'an upstairs' 
Bless her, she only knew turning right and not left so didn't notice or even see the stairs to the upper deck.

I want to say something reassuring but I feel that’s for the airlines to do. You should write to them about your concern. This is an issue that impacts everyone.
Has anyone watched the programme Mile High? It was on about 15 years ago on Sky One I think. I’ve never worked in the travel industry but have read this thread with interest and have ended up rewatching Mile High because of it (I’m about halfway through!)Such a guilty pleasure type programme!
I always wondered how realistic it was. There’s just been an episode where someone has been basically called large for needing a size 14 uniform and told it’s the largest size the airline carries and advised to try and get into a size 12 as soon as possible! Years ago when I applied to work at Monarch you had send a full length photo along with your application. I remember doing the same with Emirates! They also didn’t allow female crew to wear glasses. Not sure if this is still the case now but wouldn’t surprise me …
What would happen if you were employed as cabin crew and put on loads of weight and got really big like Alison Hammond? Would they just sack you?

They went out to Iran and the Gulf in 1948. They said that aeroplanes on that route were often converted bombers with chemical loos, and frequent stops for refuelling; it was at least an 18 hour journey. At times the luggage would be stacked down the aisle. Heathrow was basically a runway with huts and tents.

The only good thing about BA is the crew. rit business and first seats, rit food, rit company that treat their staff like rit. Alex Cruz should be ashamed of himself.
Emirates is highly subsidised by the UAE gov but they're just on another level. Singapore Airlines and Qantas are amazing too.

No Emirates you wouldn’t get a chance to get that big. There is an entire grooming team within emirates that would pick up on the weight gain and you’d have the chance to do something about it.
