Very glad to see your review as I just bought it today! I'd planned on waiting for the paperback but that hardback was so beautiful and I simply could not resist (easily swayed by a pretty cover).
I really hope you enjoy it! I borrowed my copy from the library and was first in line, there’s now over a hundred and twenty people waiting to read it. Lots of Maggie O’Farrell fans out there!

Custom of the Country klaxon! Still thinking about what a terrible person Undine is
I knew someone had mentioned Custom of the Country on here. I haven't read it, although it's on my TBR and I'm familiar with the premise, but did we know it's being made into a film?

With Sydney Sweeney no less! Now, I'm not on the Sydney Sweeney hate train that half the internet seems to be, but this still strikes me as odd casting?

that role was made for florence pugh 🥲 (though i guess she’s ticking off that kind of part by doing east of eden).

sydney sweeney has too much of an iphone face to do a period piece imo. i don’t dislike her as much as everyone seems to and i don’t think she’s a bad actress but it’s not something i can see suiting her.

incredible book though and i’m down for any and all edith wharton adaptations! i know the age of innocence film is perfection but we need more.

I would describe Undine as a modern woman in an old world, but Sydney Sweeney definitely has the "iphone face" people talk about! But thrilled that this is more recognition for the book

Omg, same thought - my mind also went to Florence! She would have been ideal

i love how often you and i share a brain daisy 🤣😘

florence really would have been amazing. i know undine is meant to be a redhead too (to my memory?) so maybe sophie turner could also do it justice but i can’t see sydney doing it. looking at the wiki, it’s a great cast overall though!

Definitely an excellent cast, including my beloved Matthew Goode ♥

Directed by Josie Rourke, who is a super theatre director, but did also make that slightly ropey Mary Queen of Scots film with Saoirse Ronan a few years back.

Speaking of Florence Pugh, I finished my reread of East of Eden this morning and can confirm it’s as glorious as I remembered it to be! It took me longer than expected to get through but that not a bad thing as I feel like I’ve savoured it. Can’t wait to see how Florence is as Cathy now.

(Also agree she would be a much better Undine than Sydney Sweeney!)

Powering my way through It Should Have Been You by Andrea Mara. A new author for me, and I am enjoying the book so far :)
