i get SO MANY naked men ads - i’m glad it’s not just me 🤣 and they always have the most insane premises: i keep getting one now which is like “he fought the enemy with his fists, but he forget to protect his HEART” and if i see it one more time i might just buy it.

what is kindle trying to tell us
Im pretty sure that's the one i had the other day 🤣🤣🤣

You be mother by Meg mason is dragging a little bit 🙈🙈 I am enjoying it but I’m just entirely sure where it’s going.

I’ve had the basic and now have the paper white. Which I bought in July time last year (prime day). Honestly there isn’t much difference at all! The paper white is slightly bigger! And there’s no ridge if you like around the screen. I have a feeling on the prime days last year, the basic didn’t go on offer but the paper white did.

I am a third of the way through Queen of Shadows of the Throne of Glass series.

It's really getting going now, I found the first three books slow (plus Assassin's Blade) but it was all world building and I managed 150 pages yesterday 😅 I think I might finish this one quite quickly.

I should be on track to finish the series and the Crescent City books before the ACOTAR 6 comes out.

I was a Chaol champion in earlier books but now in QOS he is annoying me 😅 he's like the moody teen who makes everyone feel guilty 😅

Finished Nesting by Roisin O’Donnell.

I gave it 3.5 stars. It’s one I really, really wanted to love, and I can see how powerful the story is, especially given the setting. There are definitely some strong, impactful moments, and the overall theme is meaningful, but something about it just didn’t fully land for me. I can’t quite put my finger on why, it just felt like the story itself was a bit lacking

She is the queen of over writing. Someone pointed out here how she always describes things in 3, like something was sad, upsetting, desolate. Can’t unsee it now
Ahahaha just came across this and had to share.

“A fecund, lichenous, hothouse scent.”

The writing is fairly average I think. I was more forgiving of it when I believed it was autobiographical. I was surprised it was nominated for the women’s prize.

yes think the writing is what let it down for me- not sure how it got nominated and got such rave reviews?

Lads, I made the mistake of reading a physical book and not my Kindle last week and lost my 250+ week streak.

I've already defrauded the app and got it back, but morally that's ok isn't it? I did read, just not on the kindle. It feel like my streak is tainted now, every time I look at the number going up i'm going to know it's just a filthy lie!

Reading streaks and this sort of data is probably the no.1 reason I can't have a Kindle. It would irrationally annoy me breaking a streak even if I'd still read a physical book.

It would become a numbers challenge, or keeping it going even if I don't want to read for some reason, and then i'd turn into the performative wick Jack Edwards.

It is stupid really, if i'm reading a physical book I always open my kindle and just scroll forward and back a few pages so as not to lose the streak. Should have just left it and gone cold turkey, i've never hacked it before so I think i'll allow myself this once, but if lose it again i'll lose it and so be it!

Read twice this week to make up for it and you'll be fine!

I saw Waterstones had taken money from my account and wondered what I had pre-ordered, and then realised it's KJ Charles's next book!! Sooo exciting

In a similar-ish vein, has anyone read Cat Sebastian's Star Shippers? I was having so much trouble settling down to read before, and it really was the perfect read for me this month.

This was going to be my next read. I’ll give that a miss maybe . I want something that I can’t put down!
Don’t let my review put you off 🙂 the story itself is good, and I actually read it in a day because it pulled me in. It’s definitely one of those you won’t want to put down. By the end, though, I just felt like I needed a bit more from it. Plenty of others seem to love it, so I might be in the minority here

if you do read it, i’m keen to hear your review!

I was just reading some random stuff, which I then checked and it seems like only 1% of the world's population read over 50 books a year.

I know it needs to be relative because there is a huge portion of the world whose people do not have access to books. 13% of the world are considerate illiterate. Since I have nothing better to do I went through each region and tallied up how literate they are, some places surprised me with 98% literacy rates (far flung Pacific Islands) and then places in Asia with poor rates. I lived in Asia for almost 20 years and some of those countries surprised me.

Given the world's population is at best guess 83,000,000,000. We are part of a fairly exclusive club of around 830,000,000 people in the world who are considered literate. Which isn't many at all when you think about our world. Then take that down to the 1% of people who read more than 50 books a year we are down to 8,300,000 which is a grain of rice of the worlds population.

I'll stop now before I extrapolate the exact literacy rate of Zambia and go back to the Tudor Rose novel which I am really enjoying!

How many people do you know who read + 50 books a year?

I know 1, plus me. So we are down to 8,299,998 people.

This is really interesting! I also only know me plus one friend (though I have another who manages it every couple of years).

I have a list of 20 specific books I'm trying to get through before next year, and I'm confident I will make it, but quite a few people I know have said it's unlikely, when it's just two a month.
