I’m reading the new ish Sophie Hannah book - no one would do what the Lamberts have done - I’m really struggling to get into it! I really like her, however I noticed some of her newer stuff was less enjoyable to me, has anyone read this one? Sorry if this has been mentioned!

I know my mum doesn’t track her track reading but she always has a book on the go so I’d imagine she one of the 1%. She’d probably fit in well on this thread as she’s a big Georgette Heyer fan!

On the flip side, a friend of mine still hasn’t finished a copy of Rachel’s Holiday I lent her to take on her holiday about 3 years ago! The idea of taking only 1 book on holiday baffles me anyway but to then not finish it is mind blowing!

I was just reading some random stuff, which I then checked and it seems like only 1% of the world's population read over 50 books a year.

I know it needs to be relative because there is a huge portion of the world whose people do not have access to books. 13% of the world are considerate illiterate. Since I have nothing better to do I went through each region and tallied up how literate they are, some places surprised me with 98% literacy rates (far flung Pacific Islands) and then places in Asia with poor rates. I lived in Asia for almost 20 years and some of those countries surprised me.

Given the world's population is at best guess 83,000,000,000. We are part of a fairly exclusive club of around 830,000,000 people in the world who are considered literate. Which isn't many at all when you think about our world. Then take that down to the 1% of people who read more than 50 books a year we are down to 8,300,000 which is a grain of rice of the worlds population.

I'll stop now before I extrapolate the exact literacy rate of Zambia and go back to the Tudor Rose novel which I am really enjoying!

I know 1, plus me. So we are down to 8,299,998 people.

I figured right at the bottom in the corner was out of the way enough and a good place for it! I haven't actually read it but just going on your recommendation that it sucks I dont intend to

I’ve been using Threads a bit recently cos I enjoy the book community on it. This morning I posted about how the majority of my reading was written by women and should I include more male authors? The responses were hilarious, and predominantly of the nature “nah, you’re good”.

I love threads - it’s like a big female commune


I’ve been reading a book about the reasons for the start of WW1 (I’m a geek ). It is such hard going - chapters are 2.5 hours long so I’m reading a bit each night and then something lighter. But I’ve read about five long chapters and I’ve realised this morning the only woman mentioned is Queen Victoria

I don’t read 50 books a year but last year I did 32 and this year I’m already on book 12. Last year was my first year back at work after maternity leave so I guess another factor to consider is lifestyle. I love to read and I’m happy with my numbers (I read every day mostly) but I work full time with a toddler so it’s hard to always read a lot!

I’ve read 5/16.. curious to see what’s on the shortlist tomo.

I only really pay attention to how much I read in a month, I read about 4-6 books.

Maths isn't my strong suit but I totted up last year's numbers and was pleasantly surprised to see thats about 60 books a year.

Even more pleasantly surprised that it puts me in the 1%!

I try to read at least 50 books in the year, I aim for 100 but it depends on what other hobbies I’m doing. I don’t get upset if don’t get to 100

It hadn’t occurred to me until seeing this comment, but I’m currently slogging my way through 500+ pages of The Hunt For Red October and I don’t think there are any female characters at all! Maybe that’s one of the reasons I’m not really into it.

For those who haven’t read it or seen the film it’s set during the Cold War and in and around the US and Soviet military. Not a woman to be seen apart from maybe a passing reference to a wife or daughter.

I've read all the Agatha Christie books so definitely popping this in my library wishlist. I find Lucy Foley very hit miss so not willing to spend my own money

I’ve read The Correspondent which I thought overrated, and Heart the Lover which I really enjoyed. There are a few more I’d buy on kindle deal. I could be convinced to pay more if any are highly recommended!

I've read The Correspondent which I really loved and Audition which I really didn't (found it contrived and the writing style boring and weird, one of those classic "LITERARY FICTION" (yes, all caps) books).

I have requested Heart the Lover from my library but it is taking a while.

Aye, I read Intimacies and didn’t rate it at all so was not at all interested in Audition.
