Is Phoebe a good shout for the female lead?
Why was there an expectation that it would be a person of colour? From the book synopsis, the male lead is “a bookish brooding editor”, so I immediately see the disconnect in Arnie’s son playing him! Apparently online communities often associate Dev with intellectual, romantic, and period drama roles, frequently sharing content that labels him a "bookish" crush. I certainly see bookish and brooding…

Phoebe is a meh shout for January. I find her really whiney as an actress. Like her frustration always reads as petulance to me so it will be interesting to see how she emotes a character whose father has died and she has uncovered really tough things about him that shake her vision of her childhood/what her family was like.
As for why some people expected POC casting, like the description is not definitive like LaBlonde mentioned he is said to be olive skinned, and dark haired, scruffy, good cheekbones. So it's not necessarily POC coded but it is not golden boy, East Coast prep either. And I think fans who want to see more diverse casting in movie adaptations of books see jt as "well if he's not explicitly white, then he can be POC and it would be better".
If any of you are Gilmore Girls watchers/fans, the best I saw the controversy described was: it's as if Logan was chosen to play Jess. And I'm a Logan girlie. I usually love a rich
mole turned good man trope. But that's not what Beach Read is or who Gus is.
Also re: brooding and bookish book editor, think you might have the wrong EmHen for that. That one is Book Lovers. This one is like a grumpy, loner writer with a chip on his shoulder to hide he grew up dirt poor.
