Ha I felt EXACTLY the same every time I turned the page i was like oh ffs not more misery! Its relentless and that book is one of the worst for it! I found the Great Alone dreadful tooi feel the exact same about kristin hannah. she obviously does insane levels of research but she just tries to pack so much stuff in. the last book i read of hers was the four winds and all the suffering in that was just completely pointless and it made me angry

This happened to me when a friend picked up the Winternight series (unsolicited, but she knew I liked it from my goodreads) and sent me a long message about why she didn't like The Bear and the Nightingale! I’ve just finished it today! I did enjoy it, not a 5* but I enjoyed BOBITMS too so decided to read another VE Schwab. I’ll read more, I enjoy her writing

I finished Atmosphere by TJR last night…struggled through the first maybe 50-60%, something about the writing style really grated on me. However it totally hooked me in the last 40% as a later in life gay woman! She captured that perfectly for me. Only the second book to ever make me cry!
I think it’s given me a reading slump though - I’ve started 3 books on kindle tonight and gave up. What would people recommend from the Safekeep (Yael van der Wouden), This Tender Land (William Kent Krueger) or Anxious People by Backman (does he write like he’s speaking to you for the whole of that novel as that was getting on my last nerve?!)

I read it a few years back. The idea was good but I felt the execution wasn’t and it really dragged in places.
The Safekeep I'd say! It's so good, deserves all its hype
I'd agree with this on Addie La Rue. I listened to the audio book and found myself zoning out at times, but I really enjoyed the premise. I had to DNF BOBITMS because I was listening to the audio of that too and found it really creeped me out. Great ideas but I'd say the books could definitely be edited down.
I started Wild by Kristin Hannah this week and I'm really enjoying it. I get what others have said about the lack of research, but I do think it is well written and really has grabbed me. I was reading on the train home from work last night and I was actually a bit sad when I realised I was nearing my stop (normally I'm so happy to be nearly home but i just wanted to carry on reading). I'm about 45% through so maybe the second half wont grab me as much but I'm glad I've picked it up.

I could have ordered directly from Better World Books but it was cheaper through AbeBooks (which I think is owned by Amazon!).

This just came up in my feed. Not sure if I watched it back in 2009. 
I'd probably agree with the Addie LaRue point, even having read about 35% i feel it does drag a bit but is nicely written and i really like the premise
With Wild it did indeed grab me too, it just fell a bit flat as a whole. I'd compare it to The Silent Patient which also grabbed my attention but was a bit ill informed and far fetched

I think also because 4 stars is where I put books I think are 'objectively' great, but don't scratch my personal itch, whereas 5 star books for me might be flawed but just have things I personally love (time travel with dragons? Say less!).mine are usually:
1 star - hated it, will either immediately donate it and feel sorry for who pics it up or let it fall into the where the crawdads sing book graveyard behind my bookshelf. don’t want to look at it or see it ever again.
2 stars - not as much hate as above but usually something about it really annoyed me
3 stars - fine, enjoyed it, won’t keep it and will have no lasting impact. if it’s the first of a series i likely won’t read the rest.
4 stars - liked very much, will probably keep, might seek out other books by the author. would recommend to others.
5 stars - perfection no notes. will keep forever, won’t recommend in case someone doesn’t like it and i feel sad, give a fond look whenever i pass it on one of my bookcases

How did you find out about this book?
Her story came up for me on YouTube (I like watching mountaineering type stuff) and then I think I saw the book recommend either in the comments on YouTube or when I read more about it online. It’s meant to be an excellent read because she was meant to be very experienced but then seemed to make some really poor decisions and the author covers it in more detail.
These type of books really appeal to me - things like into thin air, touching the void, dead mountain (Dyatlov Pass incident).
That is really interesting. I googled the book after you posted to see and wondered what led to your effort to get a copy
