OMG I LOVE THIS!!!

Obviously I dont think I will ever love another book as much as I love Beartown. (And Id argue Us Against You is the better book)

The writing is haunting. Beneath the story is the undercurrent of how women are treated, considered, believed, accepted, loved, revered, judged in society.

I dont often find a male author can truly grasp what its like to exist in a females body. FB just gets it and Beartown is so powerful.

Kira is so many wives and mothers. Noone is truly unlikeable, his characters are so well rounded and well written that he captures humanity perfectly. I adore it.

I am currently reading the Kew Garden Girls but I am not going to finish this before the end of the month.

Britt-Marie is a really strange book but I did love it. I found her really endearing by the end. His writing style is quite odd so just to warn you but it will likely grow on you.

I'm trying to cut down my enormous TBR by narrowing down what sort of books I really consistently enjoy rather than reading a bit of everything.

What does everyone value most in books they read?

Characters, plot, writing, vibes etc.

I think I prioritise plot-driven books, followed by great characters, and then am not all that bothered about whether the writing is great. In fact, i find myself often bored by a book where its genius is all in how good the prose is at the expense of any plot.

I genuinely can't think of any examples right now where all three are exceptional. Something like Beartown probably comes close.

I finished In Memoriam last night. I loved it one of those books I wanted to read but didn't want it to end as I knew I would miss it!

@LaBlonde this is another one of my favourites this year I read based on your comment, I think we have quite similar taste. Any other favourites this year by any chance?

YYYAASSSS! i wish it could have gone on for about 10000 more pages. i keep looking at it on my shelf and going

and omg what a compliment 🥹 it’s not from this year but if you liked in memoriam i would strongly recommend the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay for a start (not the same but similar vibes).

my other five stars this year so far have been: preloved by lauren bravo, the adventures of amina al-sirafi by shannon chakraborty, shrines of gaiety by kate atkinson, and the will of the many by james islington (which i think you’ve read!). in memoriam very much still my favourite of those though my five stars of all time will be a much longer list but i will consider it

It's that time of the month again...
I'm still on with The Official History of Britain which is a statistics book and Heal Your Drained Brain. The latter being one to concentrate on which I've not had much time to do this month.
The Rupert Everett book was a DNF as I might have slashed my wrists (it felt so depressing). He's bloody obsessed with Oscar Wilde's life!
I've already raved about some of the books.
I liked the Richard Coles book and really enjoyed The Magnificent Mrs Mayhew. Here's the blurb:

I’m not one for fancy prose and don’t like books that feel overwritten if that makes sense. I’m not intelligent enough to appreciate it. I prefer a gripping plot with a twist or two but I like good characters as well. If I can’t connect with the characters I don’t enjoy the book and it becomes a slog.
I DNFd a book halfway through recently because it felt like nothing much had really happened and the two main characters were so immature and annoying.
