Following the Stephen King chat on, my absolute favourite is Misery. Such a good book - the characters are so well written and the storyline is gripping from page one.

Honourable mentions for me go to Carrie (the first SK I ever read), The Green Mile, The Boy Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Long Walk and Cell (just don’t bother with the film version).

the only stephen king i’ve ever read is the stand (which i read during lockdown, not the greatest idea i’ve ever had). his books are just a little too dark for me but i appreciate the absolute skill of his writing. the stand has a huge cast of characters but they’re all completely unique and believable, and he makes you care about all of them. i was just very scared for a lot of it 🤣

his house in maine is a gothic dream too!

I can’t decide if Carrie or Misery is my favourite. I also enjoyed Under The Dome and The Tommyknockers. I loved Fairy Tale which I recently listened to on audiobook

Oooh I’m glad the SK chat has continued! I started it in the last thread. I normally dislike books with a lot of characters but he does make you care about them. It is very skilled. HOWEVER I have tried to read IT several times and I just can’t get into it.

Officially started the new Bella Mackie. Have a long train journey this evening so was hoping for some good interrupted hours of reading but unfortunately I’m sat immediately behind the Chattiest Man in the Whole World (official title) and he’s talking the ears off all the strangers around him loudly and it’s distracting me.

I've got Salem's Lot to read when it starts to properly hit Autumn. Read Gerard's Game a few months ago but felt very long and went off the boil a bit.

I’ve only recently started reading SK books. My first was Misery last year. I can’t decide whether I preferred the film or the book - both are very gripping!

I’ve now been on a mission to find his books in charity shops. I have Pet Sematary, Fairy Tale and The Shining so far. In fact, I might have to make one of those an October read 👻🖤

A good reading week for me as I’ve spent quite a lot of time on trains (or waiting in stations thanks to the lovely weather we have had 😂) I’ve never read a SK but after the chat above I might need to give one a go.

I finished a song of me and you by Mike Gayle on Thursday, I loved this. I do generally like his books but this one just really captured me. A little bit predictable, but I thought the main characters were great. 5⭐s

I also have just finished Every Contact Leaves a Trace by Jo Ward. Jo is a crime scene investigator and came to my in person book club this week and she was great. The book is well written and about both her personal and professional lives. A good insight to something I don’t know much about thankfully. Also 5⭐s (but for very different reasons).

I just started an ARC for the new Elizabeth Strout. I’d been sitting on it for ages not realising it’s the fifth year instalment of the Amgash series. Lucy is currently chatting to Olive K!

Ooh while people are talking about Stephen King, I wonder if anyone can help me out -

I've never really got into his books but he's my dad's favourite author, but when I was about 15 he gave me a lesser known one that apparently SK wrote with his 15 year old child in mind, and I think it was about someone being stuck in a tower? I really liked that one.

Does anyone know which one I might be talking about?

Just finished The Housemaid. I’m torn because I thought it was a bit shoddily written but I still kept going because I wanted to know what happened. I knew it was crap writing (due to one-dimensional characters) when Millie tried to sleep with Enzo out of absolutely nowhere, with no stress despite the fact that she apparently hadn’t slept with anyone in 10 years. Also this girl at the end hiring Millie as a hitman because Nina recommended her? When Nina just wanted to move on with her and her daughter’s life. Nah I need to know how characters tick and for it to make sense before I can really believe in them.

I’ve also started Bella and so far it’s exactly what I wanted to read.
Very tempting to not move for the rest of the day tbh but since there’s finally some blue sky here and I have some new cosy season PJs to pick up I will drag myself outside.

Has anyone read Intermezzo yet?

I started it and I think I am going to love it. I feel like Sallys writing in this has really taken a step up.

not yet! though i own it and am really looking forward to it (mainly because i always enjoy her male characters more than her female ones). this makes me more excited to read it 💙

it’s an absolutely gorgeous cover too. i’ve left it in my coffee table because it matches my living room almost perfectly 🤣🫣

Love this!

I’ve started the new Liane Moriarty book. I can’t remember the name as I borrowed it from the library and am reading it on my kindle. It started off well and now about 40% in it’s starting to feel like a slog. Maybe because I don’t care about the main characters back story? Hoping it picks up again as I want to like it!

Just finished A Voyage Around The Queen by Craig Brown which has taken days to read. If I owned it I would have stuck it on the coffee table to read in snatches. A bit too indigestible to read all in one go. Hence it has taken nearly a week.
Now on to The Hidden Girl by Lucinda Riley which I have golloped down over half of in a few hours today, despite having things to do and a busy week coming up. Can see me being up till the early hours to finish if I'm not truly strict with myself.
I'm rolling my eyes at myself as I speak. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄😏😏😏😏😏

Is it Here One Moment? 🦋 I’m reading this and I am enjoying it but it feels like I’ve been reading for ages and haven’t got anywhere, I’m just over halfway through.

This is disappointing because I have it on the shelf to read at some point.
It might just be me in sloth reading mode. 🦥 🤷‍♀️ I like the idea behind the story and I like some of the characters even though there’s a tit load of them. Don’t be put off, so far I would say it’s worth a read.

My loves…

Just wanted to let any book club members (because I know we don’t always check notifications for that thread straight away) know that @Caffeine Fiend’s suggestion of Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter is next months choice. It’s currently 99p but my Amazon says that’s due to end at midnight. So if anyone fancies it, be quick! 🏃🏼‍♀️
