As Lablonde says, they have books and cafe what more do we need?!
I just love bookshops so much. They’re my happy place, like nothing is wrong with the world/life when I’m walking around a bookshop. This sounds so pathetic (I do have a life honestly!) but sometimes when I’m feeling sad or down I just go to my local Waterstones and walk around looking at the books and for whatever length of time I’m in there I just feel better. Like I’m having a break from life for 20 mins.

I was browsing the Waterstones website deciding which edition to get for my LW re-read.. priorities. There’s three different Penguin hardback versions I’m tempted by (Clothbound, Puffin and another with a nice leaf design cover) but I do like aPenguin English Library floppy paperback!

Depends what goes with the rest of your collection! I always feel nervous actually reading the clothbound books (but I do it anyway). I love the Puffin cover!

So I’ve not read any of CH books and now I never will. The whole film debacle and now this leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth. This was shared by a big instagrammer I follow.

Reached my Goodreads goal of 80 books today now going to aim for 100 by the end of the year.

Not that it matters about numbers as numbers shouldn't matter but does anyone else on here set themselves a reading goal? Are you on track if you set yourself a goal?

I set myself a goal of 52 books for this year, after about a decade of reading about 6-8 books a year. I have read 48. About 15 of those are audiobooks but nevertheless I have really enjoyed engaging with these books and stories and I've spent far less time this year reading endless news articles and getting depressed. Reading has vastly improved my mental health because I find myself daydreaming about the book content rather than real life disasters and discontent.

I will definitely keep this up next year.

Edit to add: this thread has majorly helped me keep engaged and several books I've read have been 100% due to hearing about them here.

I’m watching Bake Off and a contestant did a showstopper of a book illusion cake. It was fabulous! Books were Mythos, Heartstopper, Song of Achilles and another I can’t remember.

I've had a couple of slow months. Only 1 last month and 3 this month (Currently half way through The Locked Door by Freida Mcfadden)

Did that stop me going for a charity shop browse to add more books to my tbr pile....nope all 50p
Also got 2 more Lisa Jewell books for £1 each

I’ve been struggling with my reading lately just haven’t been feeling myself and not getting stuck into books the same as usual.
Decided to go to the library this morning to collect some books and my plan is sofa and books all weekend. Hoping to read at least one book.

I set 20 minor league compared to some readers on here who do massive numbers like yourself!
But, I started using GR properly a couple of years ago when I decided to try and get properly back into reading after being distracted by tv and phone for too long. So I set a goal of 16 first year, then read 19. So then I set 19 following year as my goal and read 20. So this year it was 20… but I’m on maternity leave and so far have read 22 books So hoping for 30 by the end of the year.
I’m back to work in January though so unlikely to hit that again with F/T work and a baby to look after !

Just finished Demon Copperhead and thought it was amazing, but devastating & I know I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. I’m going to find something light and fluffy to read next to cheer myself up!

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Finished Demon this morning. It took me a while to get through but I absolutely loved it. Loved Demon’s voice and narration and found him a very endearing character I wanted to read.

if i am honest both of those promo approaches puts me right off reading a title. TIKtok just makes me think YA , vacuous, romance etc and Booker(insert other prize here)nominated just makes me think dull and boring because i'm hard pressed to find one of these prize nominated/winning titles I enjoyed despite being a lit fic girlie

Occasionally there’s a Booker or Pulitzer nominated book that I love and lulls me into a false sense that I should be reading more of them! Things like Shuggie Bain, The Underground Railroad and of course Small Things Like These, all of which were stand outs for me. Unfortunately they do seem to be rare gems in a load of other pretentious, long winded tediousness!

I found it really telling that the readers version of the NYT Best Books of the 21st Century contained way more things I’d read or wanted to read than the “official” version!

i think it very much depends on the building. my local is in an old cinema (with lovely spiral stairs in the middle) and is just a beautiful building. i know the one in york is gorgeous too (i think it’s in an old church of some kind?) - it just makes me happy to go in there

One great Waterstones for location/building is the big one in Edinburgh which has views of the castle from their cafe. It's delightful!

(Also in Edinburgh there's a Topping and Co who serve complimentary tea and coffee while you browse).

I love all bookstores though. Whether it's a big ol' secondhand treasure trove like Leakey's in Inverness, a packed to the brim independent on a high street, or a big multi-story like the Foyles on Tottenham Court Road. Plus Blackwells...all the Daunt Book locations...and all the other Topping & Co locations...and specialty stores like Persephone in Bath...

I love them all.
