I loved the Sweet Valley High and Babysitters Club books. They were such an escape and felt so different from my life. I loved the Goosebumps books too! It would be interesting to go back and read them now but my TBR says no

i will also say, while i’m here on my the works romance journey, that some modern romance books are so damn lazy. it makes me sad because the genre is SO good when it’s on point, but it seems like so many authors now are taking a central trope (they’re childhood friends and i guess one of them is a property developer! imagine if alexis from schitt’s creek met a fisherman! i’m a witch but unlucky in LOVE!) and forgetting to actually build any kind of plot around it.

there’s no build-up, no barriers, no real emotional payoff even though they’re almost all too long. what happened to pacing. i find it frustrating

It just shows how different people's tastes are as I gave this 5 stars when I read it. Yet some books leave me cold when everyone else raves about them.
I'm working my way through Beth's books. I adored The Switch which is being made into a film. Can't wait!

Oh that’s exciting! I LOVED The Switch and genuinely felt a wee bit heart broken when I finished it. I fell hard for those characters

I’ve read two books this month, both by john marrs - the passengers and the family experiment, really enjoyed them both! I’m halfway through listening to clickbait by lc north and about 20% through close to home by michael magee on my kindle but haven’t read that in weeks. the slump is still slumping 🫠

This hasn't been a good reading week for me, I mostly seem to prefer staring into space rather than pick up a book. I'm hoping I get the reading vibes back next week.

I must say it's very reassuring to see other people say they finish books and then forget what's happened in them! I do that all the time

People on the reddit book threads are always pontificating about how you're not really reading if you're not "taking it in" etc.

I never remember a single thing. Half the time I can't even tell you what I'm currently reading. It's why I use Storygraph otherwise I'd re-read every book!

Glasgow Boys by Margaret McDonald
Then I bought the Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore; this wasn't on my wishlist tbr pile but I've heard good things and I thought it would be a nice cosy read for an autumn weekend!

I devoured all the boarding school books. I used to get them one by one. My nana used to take me on the bus with a £5 note, I could buy the book - £2.99 and then get a £1 pick n mix (which was a huge bag of sweets back then) and a can of Tizer.

I would have the the book finished that day, but still need to wait.

I also remember a series featuring ponies that lived in the back garden and it was a small village. I have never found those books since.

Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner - 3.5* (I think I ruined this by watching the series first and I thought the TV series did it better.)

Currently reading Go As A River by Shelley Read, only about 3 chapters in but really enjoying it so far.

Yeah I get the hype. Only just coming to the end of book one but will likely read the rest soon after was in a bit of a slump after Demon Copperhead (my fave of the year so far by far)

I recommend Laura Dave her books are so well written. Although she often leaves the endings a bit open which I hate!

Long Island Compromise - Taffy Brodesser-Akner. I absolutely loved Fleishman is in Trouble. I thought it was such a well done social observation of parenthood

Real Americans - Rachel Kong
