😂 I guess it's a good thing. I think it's from growing up in noisy/chaotic environment and having to learn to filter things out to get the peace and quiet I crave.

Editing to add that reading that back makes it sound like I had a traumatic childhood. I didn't. It was just loud!

nope - or if i DO then it can only be instrumental music, i can’t listen to anything with lyrics. this is i think why i also struggle with audiobooks 🤣

i used to be able to read with tv on in the background (like now with the olympics i would happily sit there with a book) but i can’t do it anymore, it has to be one or the other!
Same here, it has to be instrumental, and not too up-tempo, but before bed it's silence, or, the sound of a mini fan when it's hot.

I can read in any noise - if I waited for a quiet house then I’d never read at all. I just seem to be able to zone out whatever general noise is around me and hyper focus on what I need unless there’s a really annoying noise that doesn’t match the situation - so for example on a quiet train and someone starts playing music without headphones, or a car alarm going off outside etc. ooh I can feel the rage building now! My favourite trick is reading on my phone when I’m putting my son to bed while my phone is also playing a kids Headspace story spoken by the Sesame Street characters.

But I have to have noise playing at full blast through headphones at night or I cant sleep as the slightest noise winds me up and keeps me awake. It is always Lakeside Campfire on Headspace app, nothing else will do.

Random question for you all, do you listen to anything whilst you read? I usually "need" to have some kind of ambience YouTube video on during the day/evening but magically have no problem reading in silence before I go to sleep. I've seen people in reading vlogs read with films/TV on in the background, which I used to do as a teenager but flummoxes me now. Even music with words in is too much for me some days.
Same here, I can read during the day with background kid/house/tv rackets dinging off around me, but at night time when I read in bed, I cannot read if the TV is on. Silence all the way at night!

Same for me. Spotify has a focus mix that’s curated to be a particular BPM that seems to work for me.
When I’m on a train I need to block of the noise of other people existing but not distract myself from my book. Does depend on my book though!

I mostly read before I go to sleep and don't have a TV in the bedroom. I use it as a wind down time so even if I did I wouldn't like to have it on. It's my time to escape from screens for a bit (apart from a break every 10-15mins to check tattle obviously 🤣 that doesn't count)

Same. I shared a room too so didn't have space of my own. I either read in my room while my sister did her own possibly loud thing, or in the family room.

My concentration is the worst on public transport though, which is annoying because I'd read a lot more otherwise. I can just about manage audiobooks.

we should both try with the swimming later 🤣 i have a lot of memories of being curled up with my book while my dad watched cricket or golf but i think even that would be too distracting for me now!
I did too but snooker in my dad's case which unfortunately made me nod off - for hours!

I really enjoyed The stranger in her house! The first John Marrs book I have read! Does anyone reccomend any of his other books?

All of them!

If you enjoyed The Stranger… then I’d recommended What Lies Between Us as it has a similar thriller type pacing as your next one.

Ooh just spotted John Marrs has a new book out next March! Can’t wait!!

I can’t read in silence. TV, kindle/book and phone all going at the same time 😂 I sometimes have to rewind the tv if I get engrossed in a book and sometimes sit there engrossed in the tv with kindle in hand and my phone for candy crush breaks 😂

depends what im reading, generally i have brown noise but if im reading a fantasy book I like to listen to fantasy inspired playlists (instrumental only)

@Caffeine Fiend are loops good? The older im getting the less tolerant I an becoming of noise and keep seeing this advertised on tik tok but always assume its a scam
Yes! I love them. I have Loop Engage and they just take the edge off. I originally got them as Im very over stimulated by general day to day noises. Amazon had them cheap the last prime day. There is usually another October time

I’m also a big Loops lover! I have the experience ones for gigs, the theatre and cinema etc and engage ones for just general life. I use the experience ones much more than the engage ones but I intend to start using the engage ones more to stop me getting so wound up with the husband and child.

Yes I have experience and engage. I only got my experience ones recently or Id have just got the switch ones had I known Id need the experience. Ive had my engage loops for ages.

I also wear sleep headphones with white noise and like you its one particular track only that works 😆

Recently finished:
The Mercy Chair by M.W. Craven
The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchinson

Really enjoyed them both, The Butterfly Garden was a very twisted story but it kept me hooked
