I sometimes find that the implication of something is far more effective than actually writing about it in very descriptive detail. It’s almost like the writer doesn’t know how to pack an emotional punch effectively so instead relies on trying to horrify you.

I’m only a few chapters in so I don’t know if I’ll feel that way with this book, but so far the writing style is a bit meh for me 😅
It took me a good while to get into it so persevere a bit longer and it may hook you in.

I'm 78% through and I can't wait to finish it. Not sure if I like it or hate it but there's no love for it at all.

I’m 25% through this and although it’s not what I’d usually go for, it’s holding my attention more than I’d have expected. I think it’s one of those books that if I only read a bit at a time, it won’t keep my attention so I’ll try and read a chunk in one go.

Sadly, I’m inclined to agree. Im 35% through and it’s really not hooked me. Although, I do feel for Betty. In-between I’ve read ‘when I’m gone’ and ‘because she loves me’and finished ‘Apple tree yard’, which all hooked me more than Betty. But, I will finished Betty; it’s not a book I will give up on.

I’m about 25% in too and feeling similarly. It’s causing a bit of a slump for me, I don’t have any motivation to pick it up 😕

Ive barely read the last few days for trying to focus on Betty. I feel like if I pick up another book itl derail me from it completely 🙈

Ive actually started something on Netflix which isnt like me. 😳

Ha! That reminds me of my student days when I’d start cleaning the fridge rather than open a textbook 😂

Ive had Covid and struggling to concentrate anyway so I dont think that has helped with Betty.

Easier to sit mindlessly infront of the TV.

I hope you feel better soon!

What have you started watching?

Rather than pick Betty up at night I’ve been mindlessly scrolling TikTok 🫣 I just need to power through

Ginny and Georgia? I realise I am way behind but I dont watch much tv. 2 kids, 2 dogs, an almost FT job and reading 80 + books a year leaves me with no time for tv 😅🙈

Thank you on the health front. I think I am coming out the other end now. I was v unwell with it initially. 🤯

Oh you poor pet. And I hear ya, my ability to focus disappears when I’m unwell. I have read entire books and couldn’t remember a single word immediately after. Easy comfy tv might be just what the doctor ordered.

I’m at Part Three 51% through and I really don’t know if I can go on … I might read some spoilers and decide if I should carry on. It’s not really awful, it’s just dragging on, with not much happening, we’ll nothing that’s grabbing me anyway.

I’ve finished it and gave it 3/5 stars simply because I can’t give 2.5 on Goodreads.

Obviously from my rating, I certainly didn’t love it. However I wouldn’t say I hated it either. As others have said, the difficult parts really put me off. There are some things that wouldn’t really bother me too much but reading about child grape and animal abuse got to me and it doesn’t make the book enjoyable at all.

I think the first half was better than the second and despite appreciating the twists and emotion of the later deaths, I’d mentally checked out by then and they didn’t have as much of an impact.

I also think the book was unnecessarily long.

Having said all that, it got to me enough to write a little review about it so that’s no bad thing.

Off to read either a CoHo or TJR book now to balance things out 😉

Oh no @nbt if the first half is better than the second half that doesn’t bode well for me 🤣

I feel very similarly. I just thought it was really dragged out and there weren't enough happy moments in it for me to get through the bleak. I didn't love the style of writing either. I found it really difficult to rate, but ended at 3*s because I didn't hate it, and I didn't dislike it enough to DNF. But I was glad to get to the end of it last night 🙈

@Caffeine Fiend Ginny & Georgia is perfect sick day watching! I watched the whole of Season 2 in a couple of days when I was poorly last month.

I give up. I’ve read almost 3/4 of it but I just cannot carry on. Although the subject matter is harrowing I found the style of writing tediously boring and something that would be harrowing to experience just didn’t touch me at all. I can only blame the writing style because I usually love true stories and the grittier the better. I can actually say I preferred the herd, which at least got me thinking, and the one about two nights in Lisbon, which I didn’t love, over this. This subject matter of Betty is definitely more me and I love a story of truth. That said I couldn’t get along with the tediousness of the whole storyline.

I give what I read 3/5 purely for content. I give it 1/5 for writing style.

I now need to find something more suited to me to get me back wanting to read.

I know we talked about this previously but I really want to find out what our book of the year is. Unless anyone has a better suggestion I was going to post a list of the books and then ask everyone to write a simple post like "Vote: Two Nights in Lisbon" and nothing else so it is clear it is your vote and I can tally them up that way. If someone has a better idea then please suggest. I'd like to do the end of year thingy soon because we'll be a year old in March and will want to have March book suggestions at the end of the month and it will all get messy if we are trying to do everything at once.

-----

I think Betty is the most divisive book of the year!
