I can predict the next book now: fat girl loses a significant amount of weight and is shocked by how society treats her differently.
I think I'm about the same age as Bethany and find her speech patterns really cringeworthy. She sounds like someone who's just way too online- referencing memes, shorthand and a bit of appropriation of AAVE as well- toe curling. I don't remember this from the podcast before so I wonder if this is a side effect of lockdown and being too online?! I do agree the podcast is good content wise.Stumbled here from the Jack Monroe multiverse, hello Fraus — I love the content of the WPAYO podcast, have had several top recommendations from it, but I cannot bear the delivery. I love Alice, but Bethany’s awful speech patterns are totally distracting. I know I’m “old” (‘yeah, ok boomer’ muttered my 13 year old at me last week when I asked her to do something) so I may be missing something, but all the LIKES, the clipped tones, the sighing, the bangers, the upwards inflection — it makes her sound really unintelligent when she’s clearly not.
I would be delighted if my 7 year old had made me those earrings, from a parental pride point of view, but I am totally embarrassed for her that she values them at £14 — at her age, with her exposure to properly arty people. Cringe
It's virtually impossible to outtrain a bad diet so she is definitely engaging in intentional weight loss, but she's painted herself into a corner now because woe betide anyone from the bopo circle who admits that actually, life is better when you're not fat anymore (and not just because of "fatphobia", your body is literally under less strain and feels better!)How long has she been running for? It seems bonkers that she's lost sooo much weight so quickly by doing some running and not very much else.
Oh Jesus Christ. It must be hard to get handed publishing deals from major companies. Poor Bethany. View attachment 594187
100% this. Bethany is incredibly privileged. Can you imagine her working in a care home while grafting to get her debut book noticed? If you can consider being in the right place, right time, having a rich family/immense privilege and being very jammy a career, then yes.
Urgh. I mean, I have to admit that I love Buford Brown eggs for the same reason, they have lovely golden yolks and they taste great. However, I don't feel the need to tell instagram about my egg preferences! I do think that London people can get quite one-uppy and aspirational: I was at UCL and I know what the West London set are like.
She went OFF on a friend of mine who was really close to her for losing weight after starting more exercise. The friend was about the size Bethany is now actually and apparently there had been some tension that she did not ‘support’ fat bodies by getting bigger. We aren’t friends anymore but she was really upset that as someone more pear shaped and the ‘largest’ of the people Bert knew who wore non plus sizes she was ‘picked out’ to be a bopo follower. Basically ‘babes, you’re on the cusp so less of a project.’She used to basically gang up and bully anyone in the fat community who dared to lose weight, that’s the only reason I’m pissed off with her silence surrounding it.
People that want to be noticed by her, RTed and maybe even followed. Exchanging her rich girl social currency for ££.I still don't understand who is buying these. You can get better and cheaper comparable earrings from so many places.
Ooh the shade! In my country, you are considered severely obese with a BMI of 35. I'm wondering why it is 40 in the UK?
There would be too much people maybe?
I would never identify her with the "joie de vivre"Sorry but this post is absolutely insufferably. Yes I wish I could just wander round London shopping and lazing by the lido but some of us are key workers. I’m bitter, I want to be bankrolled by my parents and have book deals land in my lap
I'd 100% recommend any of the roasting tin books but not because of Bethany or any of her boring palsI have heard good things about that series but the tin lads thing is lost on me. Sounds like weird, middle class, cliquey bullshit! It's not funny or clever.
