Alex is a prime example of why sites like this exist, because by engaging with her content alone, you are not allowed to have a different perspective, to disagree or have an opposing view without being labelled a troll, or harmful, or misinformed. You must agree on some level. This is how echo chambers are formed and maintained. If anything, surely this is making her ‘mission’ harder if she is refusing to lean into and engage constructively with debate, nuance and differing perspectives.
For what it’s worth I also think whilst there is a place for the “body positivity” movement as a direct and opposing pendulum swing from diet culture, it is not without critique and is flawed in its own way. Like with most things in life, the “answer” lies somewhere in the middle but without engaging in well thought out criticism and debate that some of the comments on her recent post are attempting, this isn’t considered.
I don’t think it helps Alex is personally very invested in her message, she’s had EDs and by all accounts has had a shocking experience of diet culture and all of the bull that goes with it. But she needs to remember not everyone has had that experience; not everyone needs to heal, others are viewing things through their own lens.
