Sadly, tagging Biden won’t do anything. I don’t think we would especially agree on the pen situation, but as hard as this sounds (amd it’s not meant to be) the time for tagging mps, trying Biden, even saving those animals has gone. It went this afternoon. It’s time to hunker down amd do an almost suicide mission now, and good luck if you make it type operation. And shouting about how politicians need to do something won’t work- there’s nothing anyone can do now but just hope. That’s not meant to sound harsh, but once we got to lunchtime and that bomb threat came in, it was count down to this.

The west were totally clueless about the obvious complexities of waring fractions. Just assuming whoever was against the Taliban was good, your enemies enemy isn't automatically on the side of good. They thought that because it was a less developed country the people were stupid and it would be easy to enrich them. No wonder they got played!

If this is the truth, that he will be last to go and basically British troops are waiting about to do this, I feel a little sick. In the time he’s been waiting and having his stuff off loaded into a warehouse other passengers could have been processed. Might not have been many, but it would have been some. Heaven help if anything goes off now, and we have waited behind for someone who has published every move to isis. This is nothing more than the gov responding to pressure because if he hadn’t have got out, the fallout would have been worse, all the ‘are lads’ lot would have been out in force
I think I’m more upset because the uk gov has sponsored the slots, an raf plane could have taken double the people in that space.
even more upsetting is that he is using Uzbekistan as a landing point. They are turning away people crossing the border for aid with visas that would help them move on elsewhere…... But others are happy to pay them for runway space Because it will be costing to land and take back off there. Anyone wanting to work with the Taliban will be charging and making the most of it.
This on top of learning how much people were charging to leave is just upsetting.

The processing staff are long gone and thats why the last civilian flight was last night; Pen is still waiting for his plane to arrive btw

It's worth noting that Russia isn't directly giving them weapons by the sound of it. They're giving them to Tajikistan who then somehow pass it on to the Taliban, it doesn't sound too far from what happened with ISIS getting their weapons from Russia, UK and US really.

Also worth noting that some of those weapons may be from Pakistan directly or indirectly. I read that Pakistan is apparently rather supportive of the Taliban but there's some fears that the Taliban may try to take over their borders/parts of the country apparently. India in general isn't too happy either but it's turned into India v Pakistan thing rather than anything else.

That says a lot to me, now I wonder how that will be reported, if at all. Probably some bollocks about her trafficking them. But nothing will be said about the men trying to charge their fellow citizens to leave.
I can’t believe at a time like this anyone would capitalise on this, but it’s how the rich get rich. And they will have been reliant on these people (probably ex servicemen running security) to safeguard their assets until the last second.

yeah I have been following this disaster over the last few days and have heard nothing about her, which is ridiculous, good on her at least some people are not just trying to exploit these vulnerable people

Worth noting that the Taliban would have had to approve this, though obviously it’s just going to look bad for the US more than anything, and Isis-K is a threat to the Taliban now anyway so it’s beneficial to them (for now)

Tbf to them it's not like many people would know what to do with a country once they capture it, even the politicians we have right now would be toast without civil servants and other employees. Also worth noting that outside the 'leader' circle a lot of the fighters will be in their early 20s which is crazy to think about

It's interesting that they're saying that women will be given more freedom this time around and that the Taliban has generally shifted from what it was 20 years ago. Whether that will actually be the case remains to be seen though, I read an article yesterday speculating that some areas may be safer than others depending on who's in charge and whether the leaders want complete uniformity in everything

Also really not getting Reddit's hype about Clarissa Ward. She's press and is therefore untouchable to a certain extent at the moment, especially when the cameras are on. It's unthinkable to be asking someone from the Taliban questions about women but at the same time, it's really not the same as a random woman doing the same

I would never trust them based on past experience regardless, but already they are showing that women will be treated awfully, when Clarissa was on tv she was made to step back as she is a woman, they are enforcing women wearing burkas/hijabs, and I read yesterday that they were forcing immams to give information about unmarried women and children and taking them from their homes

They may be advising people to go to the border but the taliban are controlling check points and any afghans that get across (to one of the countries, can’t remember which) are being sent back.

According to the MOD Twitter, Pen and the animals are in Kabul airport waiting to go. His team are not with him, unfortunately.

Both Pakistan and Iran are sending them back. Not sure about Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. but up the north east is China. No ones getting in there are they…..

but all’s well that ends well with Pen. hopefully the others that were left at the airport will be ok whilst we beg and plead and ‘move heaven and earth’ for them to get out- as said by our ‘twisted government’ . Now we need to be foot stamping and tweeting abuse at the gov to get them out. And maybe I’m a bit bitter but thats not going to happen is it….. I doubt some people on here calling for their heads yesterday will be doing it today anyway

I think Iran have history of arming terrorist groups in the region… definitely were involved in Syria, it’s not a leap to imagine they have an interest in Afghanistan too

I’m sorry to sound so ignorant but I really don’t understand how the Taliban have armed themselves with (as has been reported by PA) Russian and US made weapons and helicopters. How are they getting them? Who’s bankrolling them?

I know there’s a complex history in Afghanistan but I’m keen to read credible long reads if anyone knows any. I can’t get my head around the pace with which this has all happened. Surely the intelligence agencies would have known this was coming? If not, its a depressing indictment of how badly they understand the Taliban and how they operate.

But why just pen and his team? It’s not a dig, I’m just genuinely curious as to why him and his people who havent got documents but people aren’t demanding Wallace to go and raging about the other British nationals still stuck outside the airport.

British nationals are likely to have the documents needed and they get past security much faster. They actually seem to be on a priority list

people could complain about other Afghan nationals but the sad reality is that we don’t know many or any of them. This story has stuck because there’s people to follow, most stories don’t stick because people can’t follow those specific nationals

I remember there was an interpreter who was denied entry by the UK for some odd reason. I don’t know what happened to him since and news didn’t seem to say anything since. Though there was another interpreter on the news yesterday who did manage to get out but I don’t think it was the same guy

It does appear that Pen may be able to get through without issue as he's a British citizen, but his staff would be stuck. Not sure if animals could go through with Pen to at least be loaded into the plane and back to UK, suppose Pen could stay back afterwards with his staff

Not sure what the state of US is but judging by the document changes, I imagine that the situation is more or less the same in a way

it doesn’t seem that we are really rescuing any ‘new’ people at this point

Lyse Doucet still seems to be in Kabul (on the news now), so I wonder what the process is for press. Apparently Sky news (or some other press people) was told to go home as the governments/military didn’t want people to see the mess that would occur in the very last days

I think that’s the case, reading the article the sky newscaster Stuart Ramsey wrote. I think they knew things could go really pear shaped and tbh, having all the worlds media there when it does isn’t great, especially if they needed to undertake covert operations. It’s an interesting read
