9/11

I was about 9 when it happened. Can still remember the news reports from that time. I think it’s only now as an adult I realise the magnitude of the event. In a way it feels like a lifetime ago but still also very recent. The 10 year anniversary literally feels like it was a few years ago only.

As a previous poster mentioned earlier, it still feels like a current event rather than historical. I guess maybe part of that is because of the tragedies that have happened since 9/11 such as the London and Madrid Bombings, that Bataclan in France and the Manchester bombing to name but a few and even now with what is happening in Afghanistan.

I have watched many documentaries on 9/11, one that stands out is ‘Children of 9/11’ it came out around the 10th anniversary but I cried the whole way through it. So heartbreaking the losses suffered by so many families May all the victims RIP. X

These are all such sad stories

Spoke to my parents about it earlier and my dad said he heard about it at work but the news was that it was a small plane and then became apparent it wasn’t. He said they just could not get on to the internet at all the whole day and then everyone just went home early.

Mum was with us at our friends house after school and just remembers watching both the towers collapse; we looked up the timings and it was about 3/3.30 UK time.

What is also often forgotten is the 500k-1m people killed in the Vietnam war and the ongoing issues with reparations paid.
It's a miracle the death toll was so low for 911, imagine if they had of done it an hour later when people were at work!!

I was at my summer job in an office, I was 20.
Worst thing was, I worked beside this old cow who talked tit and made personal phone calls all day so when she exclaimed that a plane had hit the tower I didn’t really listen, because she started rambling that her daughter had ‘only’ been at the trade center the year before.
She was still phoning people when my other workmate looked on the bbc website (I wasn’t allowed the internet, being a temp ) and read out that the second tower had hit.
It was shocking at the time but it feels like it took far longer for me to realise the horror of it all. Even visiting New York in 2006 and 2009 I didn’t grasp it fully.

I was working for the Bank of New York on contract, commuting between London Bridge and Docklands.
I heard something was going on but I didn't have access to the internet so I really didn't know much till
I got home from work.

When I learned the full horror of the events I was concerned that New York was just the first stage of
a larger attack, I was sure London would be the next stage and working the next few days scared the
tit out of me.

This is not accurate at all, a small amount of officer workers in NYC starts work at 7:30am - not the normal at all! Some offices I've worked in NYC people start more later like 9:30 and are there until 7. The two towers had capacity for 50'000 people. Had it been later in the day the toll would have been much higher.

Very interesting and not focussing on the terrorist attacks, rather the FBI’s way of dealing with a group of men they believed were conspiring to commit terror offences.

Another thing I’ve often wondered was how the weather affected it. It was a beautiful, clear sunny day. But the weather in New York can change really quickly and it can get very foggy, meaning poor visibility. I can remember walking down Fifth Avenue and the top of the Empire State Building randomly disappearing behind mist and cloud. Would they have been able to pull it off had that weather been like that on 9/11?

That’s a good point actually, probably not. I know the hijackers had some flying lessons but I don’t know how many so they may have had to abort had it been different weather.

But I’m sure/hope that every person goes through a metal detector and after all the terrorist attacks in the last 20 years they would make it as near as impossible for something to happen.

I have a friend of a friend who is one of them people who says they can see ghosts etc and they come through to her to pass messages on to people, basically cut a long story short.. She was in America a few years ago and visited the 9/11 memorial and she said all she could see was people walking around crying & screaming and calling out, she said these were actual ghosts of those who have lost their lives. She immediately left the area and has said its something she can never unsee. The same at the museum too, they were just walking around crying and screaming! She hasn't returned to America since x

Saw the tennis last night, it was a lovely day and there were so many people in the audience that it felt a bit like a potential setting for something awful to happen. But I’m sure/hope that every person goes through a metal detector and after all the terrorist attacks in the last 20 years they would make it as near as impossible for something to happen.

I’m not sure how accurate that is actually - at least in the UK. The mother of one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombings continues to campaign for better and consistent security checks to big events because they are so variable and often not good enough.

But yes, you’d hope yesterday in NYC checks would have been thorough.

Yeah I was talking about New York and apologies if that wasn’t crystal clear from my post - I 100% don’t think events in Britain will be subject to much more stringent checks sadly

it was about 1.50ish pm when the first plane hit. I was sat watching neighbours.

you would have been in school where the planes hit and then finished school when towers went down as I had school friends ringing to see if I was ok
