I have to say the documentary on ITV using the footage filmed by ordinary folk was interesting from a cultural perspective. In 2001 there were a number of people filming their day watching the towers, the news, phoning friends, walking through the dusty streets. They were pretty much filming themselves screaming and panicking with their camcorder.
Nowadays we know people would probably do similar with their smartphones but back in 2001 why would you film yourself freaking out watching the towers fall 6 blocks away...and keep the footage for20 years? Must be an American thing.

The 102 Minutes documentary is similar - there’s no narrator just pieces of film crew footage but mostly Joe Public, and some of them were really intrusive. Sticking cameras in peoples faces when they were standing in Times Square, trying to take in what had happened.

In saying that, the original 102 Minutes was filmed in 2008 with an edited version being made in 2015 so I wonder if a lot of people sold the footage to producers/documentary makers? I haven’t seen the ITV one yet but it’s on the planner.

I really feel for all the folks in the area who were maybe just walking through that now have lung problems or cancer from the debris. Think of all the asbestos in that building plus the chemicals from the jet fuel etc. I read some of those people were hit hard by covid as their lungs were already damaged.

The after effects are unreal - I developed severe asthma as the dust we breathed in contained toxins posionous to humans such as lead and mercury from all the electrical cables. , also contained chemicals (PCB,s ) that reacted to the jet fuel which is harmful for females and their reproductive organs so I was very lucky to fall pregnant . My mam has to have dialysis now from being 35 onwards because It contained cadmium, which is toxic to kidneys

after I flew home from Ny a month later , it took me 5 years to get on another plane and I still have to have meds to calm me before I get on.

I appreciate everyone has these weird obssesions with 9/11 and loves watching documentaries but it is still a living hell for those that were there , I close my eyes and can still smell burning flesh from survivors, I can still see those who jumped because they wanted to die with Control in their lives still and not be burned to death

I can remeber like it was yesterday. Its the first major event I can remeber happening.
I was 10 years old in Majorca with my Mum, Dad and sister. The hotels bar was right next to our appartment and my mum could see my from the terrace area. I walked in to get an ice cream by my self. Everyone was looking at the t.v in disbelief! I got my ice cream and told my mum and dad there had been a plane crash. They didn't think anything of it until they saw it again on the news later.

17 years later I went to ground zero. I got the chills just looking at it!

I remember visiting the memorial and seeing a white rose and thought that it was from someone who knew the person then I noticed a number of white roses and I heard someone explain and I immediately choked up it just made it all the more poignant

Good point Lenny I hadn’t considered that people sold their footage.
I could totally understand they might film at the time in case something else happened and they didn’t survive, to leave some record I just couldn’t fathom why they would keep it. There is a lot of “amateur news crew” behaviour I found distasteful. At one point the wife of one “Joe Public” tells him not to point that thing at her or film her.

same , it makes me feel so old as for me it is a current event rather than a historical fact. I remember being at school, I was 13/14 and heard about it, I had never even heard of the twin towers so had no idea what a big deal it was, honestly I don't even think I would have known where afghanistan was either. I remember getting home and my parents and everyone was around just gathered around the tv in disbelief, I will never forget the sight of people jumping.

Don't know if it has been mentioned but there is a documentary called The Woman who Wasn't there which you can watch on youtube about someone who faked being in the towers. absolutely awful

I was 15, and we were due to fly out to America on the 15th to see family. School let us out early so I got home around 1:30pm, and I saw the second plane hit with my Mum. I remember asking her if it was a big plane, and we couldn’t believe it. My dad got home and was on the phone all night to try and change our flights.

I was only 5 at the time and I don’t remember anything at all but I’ve always known and talked about it.

I went through a phase of watching the airline series a while ago and found they filmed on the 11th and 12th of September. It’s really interesting to watch but my god some people are unbelievable. I’ll leave the link here although the quality isn't great but still interesting watch

I wanted to say that I wasn’t implying that the people who had taken footage were ghouls trying to profit from tragedy - I think there would have been so many documentaries made in the years after that they had invited anyone with footage to submit it.

it is very bizarre, I wish they had gone more into the psychological aspect of it tbh, in a way the case reminded me of that woman who pretended to be black (cannot remember her name) but it is still a fascinating watch

My aunt was on holiday in NYC at the time. She managed to get a flight home the following Monday & says at JFK there was very little security & she walked through a door into a hallway by mistake & no-one confronted her. When she got home she realised she had a lighter & a pair of nail scissors in her handbag which hadn’t been detected going through security.

I went to ground zero in 2005 on a college trip. I was told by my teacher not to speak to anyone with black books.

I watch the documentary’s and every single one I still pray that it has a different ending. Absolutely heartbreaking

We went in 2012, well to the area. It was still under construction but it was partially open. Having watched so many documentaries, when I got there it just felt weird.

That is horrific, the people with black books. Death and tragedy can be a morbid fascination, and I’m sure there are horrific pictures on the Internet if you look for them. But it’s something else altogether to buy pictures!
