I keep seeing reports of government agencies scrambling to re-hire people they threw out in the mass-firings, this tells us exactly how much thinking and analysis is going into these decisions, it's like unplugging everything in the kitchen and then being surprised by the fridge light not coming on.

And what looked like a special 'no I am in charge' interview with the president and his front-man (which is which is the proverbial exercise left for the reader) - what's that one about how if you have to keep telling everyone that you are in charge then you really aren't?

Looking back on the deliberately-public ambush, I think this has turned out just how Trump wanted.

At first he was talking about swanning in and taking 500 billion dollars worth of stuff as free money under the guise of repayment, but people kept fact-checking him (whether he took that in or just got annoyed is somewhat moot now I think) on the amount spent/given, and then a load of other people started telling him that maybe there wasn't that much in the ground, and it's not so easy as just shovelling it into a wheelbarrow, and the profit doesn't start rolling in for at least a few years, and he was starting to realise it wasn't going to be a rapid money printing exercise.

Then add to that the reality that it could not be a simple surrender-and-hand-over deal but needs a framework first and it's now become far too much effort.

That's when he needed a way out, and up steps Vance - whether prompted or just unable to keep his mouth shut - to be his smug patronising self righteous twat self (helping Trump to escalate and be on a roll).

I see remarks that Zelensky shouldn't have risen to the bait and to an extent I wouldn't necessarily disagree but what the fuck is a vice president underling doing having a go at a visiting head of state? This was not some random misunderstanding.


As for Trumps remarks as he was buggering of to play golf for the weekend... WTAF

I see that a large number of farmers, a demographic that largely supported Trump, are being adversely affected by the cut in USAID. In 2021 USAID bought over $2 billion of food from US farmers and now they are only just realising that? They didn’t know who they were selling to?

Seriously, what were these people thinking? It must be the height of utter abject stupidity to believe that a group of billionaires are going to be working for the interests of working people, the very people they have exploited in order to achieve that billionaire status.

My nephews and their partners, who all work for the federal government, and have done for many years following stints in the military on active service, have all had the email and are worried for their futures. (They all know people who voted for trump who are now mighty pissed off that they can’t work from home anymore.)

Kamala wasn't very good and she represented a vote for the status quo.

Abortions just isn't the highest priority for anyone and they were foolish to base it all on the one issue. It was weird telling women to think about the potential abortions their daughters might want.

I hope we have a female president, but one that gets there on merit rather than being because of her gender and being the less worse option.

Whilst I have no doubt that millions of Republicans are ready for a female president, there are also many millions from very rich fundamentalist Christian evangelical groups who form part of the MAGA power base. There was a lot of celebration from these groups at Trump’s win, and as I’ve mentioned before, the hypocrisy is off the scale when it comes to how a man like Trump can be seen as a man of their traditional “Christian family values”, when a woman who had demonstrated the same behaviours for want of a better word would be torn apart for it.

Trump doesn't understand NATO because it's not a simplistic 'pay this, get that' relationship and if he doesn't understand it then he can't control it and therefore wants no part of it. We know he was already no longer interested in the deal by the time Zelensky arrived, but some sort way forward would have been possible if Vance hadn't deliberately sabotaged it.

European countries could push Russia out of Ukraine but (and a huge one as stepping into a war like that requires all-in) if and only if they are willing to take the risk of the (non-nuclear) fallout as Putin throws whatever he has available at anything within range with the same sort of discrimination as with Ukraine, i.e. power infrastructure, hospitals etc, there's a whole load of other knock-on effects to deal with and it couldn't be immediate but staged.

Amongst other things hopefully the group meeting today can appoint a liaison to translate things into terms Trump can follow, though they still need to break his moronic attachment to false information and Kremlin talking points though since he can't remember stuff he said yesterday (or pretends not to without blinking) it might be a more basic matter of removing the prompters.

The meeting today couldn't have come at a better time.

So Joe Biden has issued a full pardon to Hunter before his sentencing in the guns and tax cases despite saying all along previously that he wouldn't. He says he's pardoning him because he believes that Hunter was only prosecuted for political reasons. The wording of the pardon is wide enough to cover any possible crimes relating to his foreign dealings in Ukraine and China which are still being investigated and which possibly implicate Biden himself.

It's a disgrace. Thankfully Trump won't be pardoning anyone. He has far too much integrity for such disgusting behaviour.

Involving celebrities has never historically helped the democrats before and they were advised not to do it by their own advisors this time but they didn’t listen. The American public doesn’t feel that they are represented by celebrities in any way.

Hard agree. It’s easy to have 20/20 hindsight but ultimately getting endorsements from Taylor Swift/Beyonce/Cardi B is not gonna convince wavering voters to plump for Kamala. At best it’ll give already committed Dem supporters a warm fuzzy feeling. But it won’t cause floating voters to decide, and it won’t convert people who favour Trump. It’s actually pretty patronising to think that it would tbh. I mean I love Cardi B but I wouldn’t copy her political views just because it’s Cardi b. Does anyone normal do things because celebrities “tell” them to?

One of the many good things about UK politics is it still retains clear blue water between politics and celebrity. And when the two attempt to mix, it rarely works out. Russell Brand loudly endorsed Labour in 2015 and they still lost. Stormzy is 72 years old and Labour, likewise. And Eddie Izzard tried to stand for parliament and got his arse handed to him on a plate. Vorderman, most people just laugh at her I suspect. So, yeah. UK definitely has its head screwed on politically in this area.
