The guy that will be in charge of the borders:
Yikes.
Is immigration too tricky a topic for a thread? I guess it probably is but it’s such an almighty shitshow wherever you look these days I bet it’d make for a right old shindig.

Couple of things - I have no real idea either ;) but I am old and have seen a lot.
By taxes I meant workers earning money pay more tax. We have high taxes in Australia compared with America, so the more people we can get paying tax the better, it means we get lots of things free/er than Americans.
We have a big thing over here (Australia) about jobs, if we can get jobs for Aussies we seem to feel we have won the jackpot.
I see absolutely no problem with people buying less, I believe all of us in the western world consume too much, because we can buy a cheap shirt we buy 2 of them when really we only need 1 so to me I don't see less consumption and hence less wastage as a bad thing.
Oh, yeah I agree, I am one of those people who doesn’t look at quality of life purely on money coming in, taxes going out. Higher taxes are fine if then don’t have to worry about getting doctors, dentists appointments and a myriad of other publicly essential things which cost more when they are privately run. Higher prices are fine for me if I want to buy more ethically.

I‘m just not sure that Trumps MAGA fanbase will see things quite the same way 😊

(I’m old too and don’t buy much anymore, but I have pretty much everything I need and I realise that isn’t true for everyone x)

On another note, I have a suggestion. US should pay back all the countries which have suffered due to its unending, often covert, interference in their politics and leadership since the end of the Second World War. The people of Chile suffered for years under Pinochet, how about the US pays them compensation. Too many other examples to mention really but if that’s the game they are playing then they owe millions if not billions of people comoensation.
That's not going to ever happen. The American people would riot.

I’m disappointed that there isn’t more footage of George W at the inauguration. Maybe that was intentional 😂

I don’t think this was really covered was it? I’m assuming he did it in jest!?

But what is your timeframe for the EU death?

It's interesting that Poland has been the biggest success of the EU and has benefited so much but support is quickly falling. From 92% support to 77% in a couple of years. As the years go on support could keep falling. Poland has already extracted most of the potential benefits from the EU.

It’s the same with Blackpool - they received a massive amount of money to try and regenerate it - new promenade etc but they massively voted for Brexit.

If you want a fairly rounded view from an American look at a chap called Hawk on TikTok . He explains a lot of what’s happening

Thanks Yel, I seem to be unable to post a thread without messing it up 🙃

One thing that I’ve been wondering about is the transition. When Biden won, in 2020, Trump refused to help with the power transition. Luckily, the Biden administration is fully supportive to enable the upcoming transition back to Trump. But I’m not sure if Trump is likely to engage with that tbh.
How would Trump spin not engaging as a positive given that he won I wonder?

Im not convinced that lightness of touch is really in Musk’s skill set.
Didn’t he buy Twitter for $40ish billion, and thanks to his brilliant business mind and drive for efficiency its value plummeted by around 80%? Is that what he’s planning to do to America?

Zelenskyy has more than enough to deal with already ( Putin AND Boris Johnson popping in for a publicity visit every 5 minutes ), but there’s no way Musk is going to miss out on all those sexy zoom calls with an actual adult.
Exactly right. Which is why this is going to implode. Or maybe explode 💥💥💥🫣

The floated idea is to have a EU with different levels of integration. I can see many member countries opting for this.
This seems like the most viable path the EU should evolve into. The one size fits all approach across so many very different countries is difficult to keep harmonious.

I moved out of the UK years ago and was in France and Brexit was mentioned a lot during elections there. Ultimately the thing the EU cares about most is the existence of the EU and a successful Brexit would have been the big threat to it's existance.
