Stephen Bear being sentenced to actual jail time has made my day. Ellis Whitehouse from Essex Live has reported the whole trial really well.

I feel like emailing them to be honest.
I know sky news did the same and was called out in twitter.
She was a daughter, friend, sibling and she was murdered.
This has really upset me.

It's so sad that the main suspect for Leah is dead. It's unlikely they will feel that his death is justice. It is sad that her brother died before finding her but having scrolled through his Facebook page I don't think he would ever have recovered mentally if they had found her body earlier.

It's just sad all round. Such a waste of two much loved lives (Leah and Haydon)

Charlene Downes was completely let down by the people that should have protected her. I too will be very surprised if they find out what happened. Too many people with things to hide and not enough that care.

I am so sorry that your relative went through that, Mindy. It's never made sense to me to use that method of questioning; if you are burgled the defence does not ask "And do you go shopping a LOT? And do you BUY THINGS?"
Thank you. It was my sister and the prosecution detailed everyone she’d ever slept with. Despite her waking up to her (ex) husband raping her on multiple occasions. And then beating her, raping her and handing himself in to police (he broke his dick raping her so he knew it was over)
She had to have a full examination, 8 hours of police interviews and then her entire sexual history laid out in court.
He got 4 years, was out after just under 3.
She fled the country and is in the other hemisphere now. After a full breakdown following the trial.
You are completely right - what other crime do we blame the victim??!

Yes you can, they wouldn't want to go back in if they didn't have it so easy, I have a couple of family members in and out of prison, they boast about making their own alcohol, drugs if needed and mobile phones, they have money sent in to shop, TV's and game consoles, and when they get released they get a case worker and found a flat without having to pay any deposit, 2 years later they back inside and the whole cycle starts again because they know how cushy they have it if they get sent down so it doesn't bother them.
imo the whole cycle starts again because they aren't addressing the root of their problems that makes them act like this, not because they have a whale of a time in prison.

They’ve named the second teenage victim as Grace Kumar.
I am so so angry about this. Those poor kids. It's results week in Nottingham so I'm sure so many students were out enjoying their last week in Notts before heading home for the summer.
Those kids had a lifetime ahead of them and its been taken. For what? For what purpose? My head hurts.

Absolutely disgusted at what’s come out about Bobbies killer. The fact he laughed about how she was still breathing..I am beyond disgusted. I can’t read anymore about it, I’m beyond terrified to be a young woman. Rest in Peace Bobbie ❤

exactly! surely anyone else would have been shocked but then “oh she was obviously looking for one of the identical guest houses in my street” and then help her on her way? why would anyone react the way this “man” did?
Absolutely. You'd also think, oh maybe this elderly person is vulnerable perhaps or suffering from something, or maybe lost their bearings. But your first action certainly wouldn't be to treat them like an old dishrag and punch bag. He was also huge: 6ft1 and 21stone according to the BBC news report.

Incredibly, incredibly distressing and definitely crosses the threshold for a murder charge.

Eta: reading the other article linked above he went out of his way to humiliate her too. She wasn't even dressed properly when he dragged her down the stairs and into the street. Complete monster.

Anyone else finding this diving 'expert' involved in the Nicola Bulley case a bit of a twat? He seems very full of his expertise, doing it all for free (PR), and discrediting the police work?

From the day he went inside it was inevitable that someone would go for him. Not just because of the disgusting crimes but because he is high profile. I’m sure they made him suffer and I’m surprised he is still alive.

I’m curious as to why incidents like this are so quickly painted as “far right”. It feels like “far right” is thrown around so carelessly now.

I understand the attacker was an immigrant which has caused a huge amount of anger and unrest… but does that make it a far right incident? I don’t condone it obviously, and I’ve always been left leaning politically (although I feel more and more politically homeless these days), but equally I understand why communities are so quick to anger when it appears that immigrants are quite over-represented when it comes to random acts of murder and violence (whether they are mentally ill or radicalised “lone wolf” type attackers).
.
Of course its far right. The man who carried out the attack has been confirmed to be a foreign national. If he'd been Irish there would not have been any protests. We saw this with the murder of Aisling Murphy, funny we didn't see the same concern about women's safety when Jastine Valdez was murdered by an Irish man. The one thing all these attacks have in common is they are carried out by men but if you say that you are rightfully told it's not fair to judge all men by the actions of a few. Why then is it ok to target all foreign nationals or at least ones who don't look right?

On the subject of DNA there was a case here in Ireland where a young woman got off a bus one evening and was making her way to her uni accommodation. She was found viciously beaten at the side of the road. The Gaurds here couldn't figure out a motive so they took the unusual step of taking the DNA of every man and woman on the bus, they never found the culprit but there was a man on the bus who had killed a woman about 10 years previous who had to confess to murder because they got a DNA match in that! What an odd stroke of luck...the funny thing about it was they never found out what actually happened to the girl or if she was attacked, hit by a car etc...

Authorities suggest that only the most exceptional circumstances of intentional strangulation warrant a custodial sentence.

“My conclusion is that there is another way of dealing with this young man.

“He grabbed the victim by her neck and strangled her until she couldn’t breathe, that must have been terrifying for her.

“It is clearly an unhealthy relationship.”

Unhealthy relationship?! He attacked her to the point she couldn’t breathe.

I am shocked by this. Given how little time it could take for someone to die from this and how utterly terrifying it must be, I’m gobsmacked that he got a suspended sentence and that it seems to be the norm not to go to prison for this!!

surely a few students and teachers could have grabbed a few broomsticks and beat the pupil with them lol he had a knife, not a gun.
Yes lets blame the other students and teachers for not fighting off a dickhead with a knife, rather than the actual person who had a knife at school in the first place:rolleyes:

MIL should keep her mouth shut. Beyond disrespectful. Some of the most horrendous beasts are family men, do charity work, work with the vulnerable. You know why? Easy fucking access to victims, just like an officer.

Oh dear god here we go again, that poor lady😖WTF..it’s just so…….🙁

I don't understand why they weren't charged with attempted murder? They doused her with a caustic substance and force-fed her with pills which have left her in a vegetative state with no chance of recovery. They failed to call an ambulance for her for two to three days, which made the brain injury worse. She is now receiving palliative care, and although she might live for a number of years, her condition won't improve.

Surely this was a case of them trying to kill her? In a longer article in the DM, the judge is quoted as saying that 'It's difficult to imagine a more serious injury, short of death'. And yet they weren't even given the maximum sentence for what they were charged with, which was 10 years at the time of the offence.

There were no mitigating circumstances, and all the defendants were additionally found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. I honestly think the justice system in the UK is broken. They should have received the maximum sentence for what they were charged with.

It's absolutely heart breaking. I will never trust a man in authority again and I think a lot needs to be changed to reassure women that if they are ever approached by a single male policeman they can resist and refuse to cooperate. Poor poor Sarah. I'm sad for her, and for all women who can never be safe. People just don't understand the fear we have to overcome going out in the evenings, or even answering the door sometimes.
I said the same back in March on one of these threads when it was first suspected this was his modus operandi. As a woman, I will never, ever trust a single police officer now, not with any ID, with any card, without asking for the search record (if a stop and search) and without calling up their station and asking for the presence of other officers. And I'll damn cite this case if they ever question it
