When I was a little girl a child died because they stood on the Christmas lights wire barefoot. I have always remembered this and now as a parent think about the poor family a lot.
A few years back there was a story about a little girl being awfully neglected. Her stepfather built a cage around her cot because she was a bad sleeper. She was the same age when she died as my daughter was when it went to trial (hope that makes sense) so it really struck a chord and stuck with me for weeks.

There's also no windows in the sub other then the toilet. How do they even explore the titanic? Camera at the front, they do have TV screens.
Makes you think what’s the fucking point? Going two and a half miles under water to watch a tiny screen. Rich people, man.

This is so sad and terrifying. I see Rishi Sunek has sent his thoughts to the families. I don’t take much in these kinds of things, but on the other hand, that’s never a good sign, imo.

My dad worked on Titanic artifacts and was consulted (due to the nature of his job) about raising parts of the Titanic. Several people (including Ballard’s party) and companies offered him the chance to go down and see it and he declined every single time, because of this very situation. He swore blind something like this would happen one day.

Yeah they'll probably freeze if the motors stop, best case scenario the vessel blew a bolt right at the beginning and they've perished quickly.
These people are dead. To be real there's no need for anyone down looking at Titanic, we know enough. It's a historic grave site now. I think people go out to the site and leave floral wreaths etc. The people who died on that awful night didn't have a choice, beyond tragic.

Look at all the drama these people have caused, by CHOOSING to go on such a risky, and costly, expedition . There's nothing sad about it. Now the Chilean miners, or those poor kids who got stuck in the Thai cave.... they were sad stories. And those particular victims deserved for every rescue assistance be made available to them. These wealthy guys in the sub? Well, whilst I do hope they are found alive and well I think perhaps they should be billed for rescue efforts?? Just my opinion.
Fair enough it's not everyone's cup of tea and it isn't something I would do personally but I still think it's sad that these people are lost at sea in a tiny sub and running out of air fast. One of the men seemed to be really into expeditions, which seemed to be a bit of a hobby so I can't judge people for what things they are into in life.
yeah it might have been a stupid idea for them to go down in sub like that so far underwater but it's done now. I don't think them being weathly should really matter here, it's still people's lives, regardless of rich or poor. The more I read about that sub the more claustrophobic I feel and I just can't get what will be going through their heads if they are still alive. All the money in the world or not, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, What a horrible way for your life to end.
I can totally get why some people aren't feeling sympathetic for them but I just find it hard not to feel sorry for them.

It's giving me palpitations thinking about it. I'm pretty claustrophobic at the best of tines and deep sea freaks me out. I cannot imagine choosing to go in that thing!

I can't stop thinking about the fact they might still be alive. I know it's wildly impractical but you'd want to be sent down with a cyanide capsule in case something like this were to happen.

It's perfectly possible to feel sympathy for the very wealthy. Some of the behaviour I have seen online has been reprehensible. Don't tell me I have to make a choice between feeling sorry for this and the migrant boat in Greece that sank - empathy, thank God, is not a finite resource.

God this is awful. But I also think it’s so disrespectful to those that lost their lives on Titanic. That’s their final resting place, leave them alone. I guess if you’re that rich you run out of exciting things to do. Do they even have food and water?

There were weights thst would drop off after 24 hours to allow it to float to the surface apparently. You would think it would have a GPS though. They could be at the bottom waiting to die or the surface. If a current caught them, they could be miles away.
GPS does not work underwater. Lots of things based on radio waves basically just do not work underwater. You can do something similar to GPS using sonar pings from multiple locator beacons but it appears this company didn't do any of that. Just like they didn't have the rescue equipment on hand so they're now bleating about it being held hostage by paperwork. Obviously hope the people on the sub get rescued but at the same time I very much hope that the amateur operation behind the dives is standing up an awful lot of money to the companies and country organisations they're now expecting to mobilise huge ships, people and machinery across the world for them. The cost will be *immense* especially as those other ships and people aren't just sitting around with nothing to do, they are booked on very expensive normal jobs.

I'm obsessed with this story. I cannot imagine sitting in a death tube in complete darkness and no noise. With other people too. This would be hell.
Same, and there's no escape without them being found and retrieved by another vessel, and it sounds like not a lot of rescue vessels can go that deep. It does sound like an experimental thing. It can't be good to be down there for more than a few hours even if there's oxygen supply, surely there's immense pressures. Plus it would be so dark down there. Apparently the submersible had done some test dives but it sounds like every dive has been lucky.

I personally don't think we should be touring wrecks/ water graves, there's something so eerie and sad about the wrecks, I can barely stomach seeing the pictures of the Titanic let alone getting in a contraption the size of a truck.

I just hope these people can be found.

Might sound daft but does the ocean move that far down or is it still?
It still moves. There was a guy on radio 4 earlier who went down 20 years ago and they got swept by an undercurrent into the titanic propeller and were stuck for over an hour expecting to die.

There’ll be a film about this in 10 years time.

The press narrative is so strange. They’re eulogising in this case, and in the large ship that so many lost their lives on, they’re simply seeking to blame the Greek coastguard.
I’m not saying either approach is right or wrong, but there were children on that ship, who should have had full lives ahead of them. Their parents, like the billionaire in the tin can, chose risk for their child(ren) yet some are reported on more favourably than others.
Not sure where I’m going with this, but I have very little empathy for the billionaires.

This is a really sad story and also totally avoidable.
It always makes me feel like we've gone so wrong as a society that people with that kind of disposable income spend it on thrill seeking trips rather than do something worthwhile for a greater good.
I do hope they are found but it seems unlikely based on the news articles.
