I will be lighting a candle tonight for both the lost souls in the Titanic tourist submarine and the Greek migrants. No matter if you're a WEF billionaire or poor migrant, no one deserves to die at sea.

Don’t get me wrong it is sad (especially for the young 19 year old who potentially doesn’t have enough life experience to really understand the waiver) however once again it is rich people fucking about for the sake of it. If you have that much money then make better choices. I hope the company is made to pay back any costs in relation to the rescue efforts. I find it very strange to see people’s reactions to this compared to the sinking of the migrant boat where hundreds of vulnerable lost their lives.
I just can’t see a good outcome from this. If they do survive then they likely will be left severely traumatised for the rest of their lives. There are some things money can’t fix.

I'm obsessed with this story. I cannot imagine sitting in a death tube in complete darkness and no noise. With other people too. This would be hell.

If they are found I feel very, very sorry for whoever is tasked with opening that thing. Imagine the sight and the smell, you'd be traumatised for life

Leah Betts. The photo of her in the coma. It influenced how I was around drugs and there was no better “just say no” campaign for me. I just automatically thought I’d take an ecstasy and end up like her. To this day, I’ve never ever touched it. All my friends did. It certainly shaped my attitude to it. I felt very confident to refuse, without hesitation.

Must have been so very painful for her parents to have shared that photo? But it certainly stopped me from experimenting with it.

It’s of course very sad, but also sad that this is the story people are gripped on when hundreds of men, women and children have drowned in a boat on the Med this past week too. We seem (and I include myself in this) somewhat desensitised to asylum seekers and economic migrants drowning, and here we are discussing 5 billionaires drowning, in basically a tin can, on a vanity project.
whether or not they’re remains are ever found, their families should be donating massive sums to the search and rescue missions who’ve gone out to try and recover them. This was so fucking needless, and the press coverage is excessive IMO. It shouldn’t be headline news that 5 very wealthy men have drowned in a tin can, trying to get to the floor of the ocean.
Exactly. Hundreds died last week, women and children locked in the bottom of the boat- the same situation as these rich people. Migrants desperately seeking a better life, risking their family’s lives to do so. Not many people care- ‘it’s their own fault’ attitude.

Five mega rich people lock themselves in a tin can to travel to see what is just an underwater graveyard for their own self absorption and with more money than sense and it’s world news. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an horrific way to die and the thought makes me shiver but surely you’d think it was a death sentence waiting to happen?!

Read an article earlier where a previous passenger on the submarine said they went around the Titanic wreckage twice and even landed on the deck. How reckless is that? What if the deck had given way and they ended up trapped in the wreckage? He also described it as a suicide mission.
Separating totally for a sec the on going tragedy.
The actual ego of landing on the deck of the titanic so that those who are wealthy enough can brag that they did that I find revolting, its like wheres the respect for those who lost there life on board, does every last thing have to be turned into a tourist attraction, respect the dead, respect the ocean . It reminds me weirdly of when the first man landed on the moon and what does he do .... stick the American flag in it ! I'm probably not making sense I know but I find things like this such bad taste..... just because you can doesn't mean you should .

I read that the owner / creator of this sub was advised to paint it orange so it’s easier to see in the blue / grey sea. However he chose to paint it grey instead. Can you imagine if the automatic buoyancy has worked, and they’re just floating somewhere in the sea just below the surface, invisible and still running out of air :( What a shitshow it sounds like this creation was.

Yes, isn't this unreal and so sad. I love anything to do with the Titanic and have seen drone footage I presume of the wreckage. The thought of actually visiting the site physically frightens me and I wasn't aware there was a tourism industry offering this.
I hope the people are OK.

plenty of horrible things happen the world over. If you can’t have sympathy for a fellow human just because you perceive them as rich, it says a lot about you.

I’ve seen too many comments comparing this to the migrant issue, but when has anyone ever not bothered to try and rescue migrants if they know they’re in peril?

I find it odd people have no sympathy because these people have made money for themselves. everyone can if their able to work hard enough and have a little luck. Plenty of us agree it was a daft thing to go on, but thank god we live in a free world where people try. I’m sure we’ve all been amazed to see footage of the Titanic in recent years, we only saw them because people pushed boundaries and innovation, we're all a little guilty of encouraging fascination with the ship.

what is heartening is seeing people the world over offering help and trying to save them. I hope they’re successful. and I hope not to read anyone else not having sympathy for them just because ‘they’re rich'. So bloody what. They’re human and we should help each other. The day we don’t humanity is on the road to end.

I love anything to do with Titanic (boat and film 😂) but I always look at the wreckage as a graveyard for those who didn’t make it. Leave it alone. We have models and clear footage of the wreckage now. Being that deep in the ocean is like being in space.

I can’t see this having a good outcome at all, they must be terrified!

Don’t know about everyone else but although I thought I was capable of making adult decisions at 19, I most definitely could not. So yes I do feel sorry for the teenage boy over the grown men

I did a hammerhead dive in The Maldives. You dove down 30m into the blue and wait. There is blue all around and the only way you know if up is the direction the bubbles are going. It's a weird feeling.
im sure it was a magical experience and I can only speak for myself when I say this but seriously, fuck that 😂

2022 article from a reporter who went on a trip on the sub

couple of quotes from the article:

Not gonna lie; I was a little nervous, especially given the paperwork, which read, "This experimental vessel has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, emotional trauma, or death."
And yet, I couldn't help noticing how many pieces of this sub seemed improvised, with off-the-shelf components. Piloting the craft is run with a video game controller.
