"as if one of my favourite authors just sent me a signed copy of her book"

Let's unpack this a bit.

Jack declares that Donna Tartt is one of his favourite authors.

Untitled09-890-098099-=0-=.png

Of the three novels that Donna Tartt has published, Jack has only read one of them.

And, let's face it, since he lies about 99% of the books he claims to have read, he most likely didn't read The Secret History, either. But we'll give him the benefit of the doubt for the hell of it.

The one book he read of Tartt's only warranted a 4/5 score. Not bad, but reading one out of three books and giving it 4/5 certainly doesn't scream "favourite author", epecially considering Jack claims to read hundreds of books a year. Surely any of the numerous authors whose books he's been handing random 5 stars to year after year would be stronger contenders for "favourite author", right?

And just in case Jack had updated his Storygraph account more than Goodreads...

There's just the one Tartt book marked 'read' over there, too.

Jack also claims Donna Tartt sent him the book, because he's a perennial starfucker who desperately wants people to believe he's besties with all the celebs and all your favourite authors, even though none of them know who this asshole is.

And then this lying dumbass opens the book to show that this wasn't sent by Tartt at all. There's no personalised message just for Jack from Tarrt. It was sent by Jack's marketing contact at Little & Brown.

To hammer the lies home, Jack stupidly points to the promotional 'Signed by the Author' sticker on the cover. This wasn't a copy the author signed just for him and sent to him. This is a standard author-signed retail copy of the 10th Anniversary reprint that was released at the end of October.

Publishers have these for most major/semi-big releases - the author signs their name in a big stack of copies to be sold at major bookstores alongside the standard hardcover while stocks last.

You could buy this exact book, signed by Tartt, from Waterstones for £25 for a while in October.

Jack is not special, much as he'd like people to believe so. Donna Tartt isn't watching his content and sending him gifts. The marketing people at Little & Brown just sent one of the copies they had lying around for Jack to advertise on channel (and, as with everything he does, he did it late).

If the embarrassingly unconvincing shocked expression weren't a dead giveaway, Jack either asked for it or at least knew it was coming. It's nothing more than an undeclared ad for a new-release retail product, sent to him by a publisher's marketing team, and Jack's lying his ass off in about 6 different ways to hide it and try to get clout.

What an embarrassing clown.

As a fellow English student, it is absurd how awful Jack’s taste in literature is. Jesus fucking Christ.
I’m gonna clap back here, who cares? If he enjoys it he enjoys it? Snobbery around books grinds my gears, so many people don’t read so even if someone is reading “trash” who cares, he also reads a lot for his job, these videos and because I’m assuming books are sent to him?

We need to normalise putting pressure on YouTubers and influencers who are continually hawking shit to us that we don’t want or need, all to line their greedy little pockets because they are too lazy to graft and work for a living.
If that means questioning their sexuality than so be it. You’re in the limelight now sweaty, deal with it!
I mean I agree we need to apply pressure on their morals of selling etc but their sexuality isn’t fair, like in any other job would it be relevant? Absolutely not. Pressure them about AD declaration, pressure them about engagement and accountability but there’s a line. No one should be forced to talk about their sexuality before they’re ready

It's wrong of him to be so clearly gay but hide behind the facade of being straight (or at least bi) by having a girlfriend and gain the privileges of both sides.
Ngl this is one of the biggest reaches I've ever read. I find Jack high irritating but come on. 1. He hasn't said anything about his sexuality so we have no idea if he's bi or straight, and it's none of our business anyway. 2. Even if he is bi, you know bi men are allowed to date women... that's literally how being bi works 🤦 Lets not get homophobic on this thread.

Does it annoy anyone else when he makes jokes about his bank balance being low? He said in his Kylie Jenner video from today that his bank balance is like the numbers on the Squid Game uniforms (3 digits). We all know he's not actually living in poverty and it's honestly insulting for him to cosplay as poor when most people couldn't just up and move to Paris on a whim (not to mention have designer clothing, buy tons of books, etc.). I guess it's part of his quirky, relatable, "I hate capitalism" act but it's exactly that: an act. I know it's probably meant as sarcasm and I actually like Jack most of the time, but it's insulting when so many people are struggling to make ends meet.

i don't follow him on social media, just on YouTube so cant comment on what he posts there. as usual, i still cant believe he has a girlfriend
If you're talking about his sexuality I've got to say I quite admire that he doesn't feel the need to conform to more stereotypically masculine behaviour. I know a couple of straight guys with more feminine mannerisms and it tends to be that they weren't exposed to that much toxic masculinity growing up and don't feel pressured to conform to acting in a certain way.

If y'all want to follow jack on his author's journey

Sneak preview of future updates:

"After three months, I finally settled on a name for my protagonist: Jack Hedwards. Chef's kiss."

"Six month update: The book is called 'Jack to the Future' and is about a disillusioned graduate from fictional Burham University who travels back in time to right all the wrongs that caused him to be unfairly rejected from Oxford University. We love an underdog story."

"Fifteenth rejection from publishers. Apparently twelve puns per sentence is too many. They said it was especially inappropriate during the funeral scene. I said I was just trying to put the fun in funeral. They've stopped responding to my emails."

"Does anyone have any book ideas I can borrow? Asking for a friend."

Is it just me or do they try way too hard to show they are book people, to the point it actually convinces me they arent

Sometimes I look at Jack and I wonder how differently my life could have turned out if I’d only had the confidence of a very mediocre white man. I just hope for his sake he really has made the most of it because I am not sure how successful his pivot into fashion/travel/lifestyle is going to be. He was lucky to blow up in the way he has because it’s not been down to he sparkling personality

Feel like all I do on this thread is bring up Ibz Mo BUT in his latest vid he said people need to stop using the words "state school" to mean "disadvantaged" bc he rightly points out going to a state school in a rich area is a whole different game - I don't know if he's thinking of Jack when he says it but it def reflects some things that have been said here about Jack clinging to his state education as being his last bastion of disadvantage when in fact his particular school was amazing and thus doesn't make the point he wants it to (and why act like you didn't have a great education? Just acknowledge it and say you were lucky!)

Not super invested in Jack, but just wondering - how do we know he's a Tory?

I just thought he was a little pretentious, didn't know he was the Alfie Deyes of Booktube.
He came out a while back saying something like "If you vote Labour without familiarising yourself with Conservative policy, then don't talk to me".

He fell over himself rushing to appear on GB News - the UK's disastrous right-wing news channel equivalent of Fox News - and signal-boosted their hateful bullshit just to hype that he'd be on TV (on a network that only a handful of hateful Nazis watch, and sometimes nobody at all is watching). When criticised for it, he claimed it was to "challenge their views", but spent the whole appearance like a nodding dog, laughing along at their bad jokes, mostly agreeing with them and grinning like a moron who was happy to be there.

He's also mates with Tory scumbag and fellow Durham graduate Tom Harwood, who works at GB News and undoubtedly got Jack the guest appearance gig.

He'll never admit it, since it'd be influencer career suicide to out himself as a Tory, but all signs point to it.

I love the analogy he used “fitting a round peg in a square hole” yes Jack you’re gay!! Eureka!!!
Can we not assume someone’s sexuality? From what I saw, Jack never claimed to be straight and bi/pan people exist :) And even if he said it and it’s not the case, he might not have figured it out yet at the time or felt comfortable to publicly come out.
