Worst holiday experiences?

Seeing as we can't go anywhere at the moment (thanks Corona!), instead of sitting thinking about what we're missing out on I thought we could think of our worst holiday experiences to remind us that holiday's aren't always that great!

Mine was 4 years ago in Spain. It was mine and my partners first foreign holiday alone. I'm all for saying hello to people round the pool and maybe just some polite chit chat but we met this couple who took it to the extreme. They were a similar age to us and had a 3 year old daughter with them. The daughter was lovely, she kept toddling up to my partner and I on our sun loungers to show us whatever toys she had. We'd politely respond to her then wait for her to walk away. The parents obviously saw this and came over for a chat. Fromt that moment on we could not get rid of them!!! We politely told them we were going up to our room and said "see you around the pool sometime!". Much to our disappointment, when we came down for dinner the same couple had saved us a seat at their table. The following morning, they'd reserved us some loungers right next to them. They kept waiting in the reception foyer for us after we'd gone back up after dinner to freshen up. It was like they thought we were best mates! On the penultimate evening I noticed a friend request on FB - it was them!! We'd only told them our first names and where we were from (we both have fairly common names too!) and they'd managed to find us! Everything we tried to do on that holiday, they'd want to tag along, be it a walk along the beach in the evening, shopping etc they were there following us like a bad smell. Obviously we didn't want to be rude but it was soooo frustrating.

As I say, I'm all for a polite chit chat but I don't really want some complete strangers impeding on my entire holiday!

5 years ago travelling by Ryanair to Malta.

Flight delayed
Seats double-booked
One case ended up on the wrong plane, and took an age to find
The usual Ryanair unexpected "extras"
inflight meal was ghastly, and i ended up in the hotel loo soon after arriving
All I got from them was a "sorry!"

a and elbows

Egypt holiday when I was younger all-inclusive two weeks I was 19 didnt like the bored of sitting around the pool for ages i was bored (didnt understand the joys of just relaxing now im lucky to get half a day relaxing with hoildays now with step daughter).
But the partner dave at the time got the coach driver demanding money off him saying no to change saying English paper to put or luggage in the coach. (Tour guides aren't allowed in airport so we was scared to death he wouldn't let us on coach) he ended up giving £10.
We went on a tour dave gets locked in a shop and I had to say we had a coach to catch and I would scream bloody murder if he didn't get let out this minute.
Dave wanted to watch the football so he stayed in the bar had to get him at 2am even though included drinks stopped at 12. He said he was talking to people but he was laid on the bar talking to himself. Had to carry him back to the room were he was sick in the bathroom and left a crappy bum crap mark on the bottom sheet of the bed. Cleaned up the best I could left him in bed but got asked where my partner was al time I was blonde and apparently women wasn't allowed on their own. He met me at lunch coming back to room the poor guy that had to finish cleaning making a joke it was me because he saw me going to bar. So rest of hoilday known as sick women. Dave just laughed.
Flight got delayed had to stay in a hotel that didn't want us there for 10hours lucky I didn't get my wrist band cut off so I could get drinks for us both.
I had a upset stomach on the plane so for 8 hours I cried because I can't used toilet on plane because people will smell it. Got to England toilets I couldn't even go in they smelt that bad. Had to plead with my dad to drop off at the nearest services till I was empty

Holiday to Mallorca 2013. Brilliant holiday just one unfortunate night!

My husband for the whole gorgeous holiday had been buying weed and the occasional bit of marching powder from one of the sunglasses touts. He disappeared round a corner not to return. 5 minutes had turned into 2 hours. I went back to the hotel to find out from the staff he had been arrested. I didnt sleep for my husband to come back the next afternoon. He only went round that corner to buy weed off the regular sunglasses dude. The next thing you know the Spanish police all swooped in from no where and arrested the sunglasses dude - and aload of other sunglasses dudes. And my ex husband also as being part of a suspected drugs ring. He had to go back by interpol to prove his innocence.

Another time we went to Marrakesh. There was this older, really over friendly, touchy feely woman, she was at working at the hotel but seemed to have her fingers into every role. Anyway we booked a hammam. This woman was bloody doing that and all! She spent the entire time telling my ex husband what a gorgeous man he is, what a strong body he has and she would marry him in her sultry accent infront of me. While giving him a massage. We laughed it off but for the rest of the holiday we had to avoid her advances to my ex husband. It was like she had to make some sort of physical contact with him whenever she passed us. It was so awkward.

I also tried to buy myself some solid weed on that same Marrakesh holiday. It turned out to be a piece of toffee. 🤦‍♀️ I never lived that down.

8 months pregnant and armed with 5 kids we went to haven in Scarborough

it pissed it down the whole holiday-to the the point we almost got flooded out
there was nothing to do,nowhere we could go

me-the size of a whale, and 5 kids all jammed into the worlds smallest caravan
never been so fed up in my whole life-that week went on for a year

a few years later my mate thought it would be a good idea to go away together,in the same place (I never learn)

me,her my 6 and her 3 all went

never,ever again

i left my bag with my clothes in at home by mistake-I had to hand wash my clothes in the sink every night

i knew hers where spoilt and she was ineffective at telling them off but as I’d known her for years I figured we’d be ok going one way and her the other-meet up for mealtimes and the odd activity together

how wrong was I?

she couldn’t cope with her 3 at all (was very used to her large family doing everything)

I ended up having to cope with 9 kids on my own

her eldest did everything he could to ruin everything

He’d lash out-I was banned from bollocking him as ‘he doesn’t like being told off’

he had my lot doing all his work (as a large family we where used to pulling together) but he ‘hates that-don’t make him do anything as it may break his spirit’

he whinged, whinged and moaned at every little thing-every moment of everyday

he bragged about how much spending money he had (thanks to granddad giving him £500 for his spends-I had that between us)

they made a real mess in maccys-slinging chips at each other and throwing milkshakes-she just laughed ‘thats what they get paid for’
mine where amazed as I don’t allow that-we always clean up after ourselves

he taught mine swear words-and she tried to bollock mine for teaching him

her lot spat every 3 seconds

they made this really loud annoying noise every 5 minutes-and would ignore her the few times she asked them to stop

they broke a window with a heavy football, then tried to say it was my lot-where where in our caravan at the time-she tried to get me to pay for it when we got back-I point blank refused-I think her dad shelled out in the end

theyd lie to her face-she’d see them doing something naughty-ask if they’d just done whatever it was-and believe them if they said no even tho she’d just seen them do it!

they pumped £100’s into the one armed bandits-i couldn’t afford for mine to do that so her lot called them’ peasants’ to their faces-she’d just laugh it off

she only wanted to do expensive stuff-she could ring her mum and dad when the cash ran out-I couldnt

all 3 of hers had their toys to play with (she told me not to bring any of my lots toys as there wasn’t room for them) but they wouldnt share

she just slobbed around on her phone while I cooked every meal, then washed up,while trying to entertain 9 of them (she couldn’t wash up as she had never done it before-and stood moaning as the caravan didn’t have a dishwasher)

she hit the roof as my eldest (aged 13) told her she wasn’t the free nanny-and maybe she should be responsible for her own kids

and the one time my eldest took her 2nd child for a walk to a bin that was a minute away, the kid slipped on a leaf and hurt her ankle

my mate went mental at her for not looking after her brat properly-if the kid had just walked and not been messing about even tho mine asked her to calm down,it wouldn’t have happened

we just couldn’t make plans for our day,for some space,as she ‘couldn’t cope’ with her own-I honestly think we where asked to go so she could have a break and I’d be the free nanny (she did have form for this but in much smaller amounts)

we finally said we’d catch the train home as it was getting too much-she booked us the tickets,I paid for them in cash and it turned out she’d charged me more than double and kept the extra!

she told everyone that it was my lot that had been nightmares (they had the odd moment-I’m not saying they are angels, and I dealt with it) but they really where not as bad as hers

we did stay friends but on a much less level-I let it fizzle out over the years

Holiday in Sri Lanka never again! Had altercations with the local taxi mafia and a knife wielding coconut seller 🙄 We decided to cut our month long stay short after 2 weeks and booked a flight out, on our last night we decided to travel to the airport and stay in a hotel close by, the next day ended up being the day of the easter bombings, we were staying 5 mins away from the closest bombing site and were sat in the hotel terrified all day our hotel was next, so glad to get on the plane safe that evening.

Loving these stories.

I went to Tenerife a few years ago with a friend and from day two had a bad stomach, to the point where I spent most of the time in bed feeling so ill. My friend even went on a preplanned day trip without me and I was gutted as I really wanted to go. (I did persuade her to go on her own)

Anyway for some reason other guests started sticking their ore in. This old chap we’d politely spoken to on the first day kept on bugging me to ask if I was okay when I’d decided to take refuge on a sun lounger. Which sounds nice but I just wanted to be left in peace. Then one evening when I was walking out of the restaurant to go back to the room (nausea was coming back) a lady stopped me and asked how my friend was, she’d heard there was a poorly girl. I said no it was me, and she was giving me twenty questions.
it was really irritating.
Then on the last day I started feeling better so we got the bus somewhere. On the way back the bus lurched to a stop and I jolted forward, cutting my toe. I got off the bus with a trail of blood and covering my flip flop.

I was glad to get home! Me and my friend don’t talk about that holiday lol.

We’d booked an “exclusive” villa in Florida, can’t remember which travel company, but we’d booked similar accommodation with them before so had quite high expectations.

We arrived, and as we pulled up we were sure they’d given us the wrong address. It was horrific, so dirty, messy, dated, rubbish left laying about, just awful. It was quite late in the evening so too late to do anything that night, so decided just to sleep there that night but not unpack. Barely slept because I was so worried there was bed bugs, or fleas or something.
The next morning we packed up the car again and went to the welcome meeting to complain. The holiday reps left us waiting for about an hour or so whilst they said they were trying to sort something out, except they weren’t, they were too busy slagging off the “difficult” family :ROFLMAO: They didn’t realise I could hear every word they were saying about us.
They were very apologetic when they realised they’d be caught out, and did eventually find us some much better accommodation with some upgrades, and we had a fab holiday.

fell over on a grass hill on the last night of holiday (thankfully) and managed to smash my foot in half, split the 1st metatarsal base and broke all my toes!

Travelled along the East Coast of USA a few years ago. Loved it especially NYC. I then travelled from NYC to Toronto, Canada... on an 11 hour Megabus! Worse decision ever even though it only cost me 10 dollars. Met some right characters on the bus, one of them was a guy who spoke loudly on the phone saying ‘you’re pregnant right? So I don’t need to use a condom’ 😬😩 Also, the driver pulled over on the highway and said that he hadn’t shut the luggage doors and some luggage has fallen onto the road! My anxiety was SO BAD thinking it was my suitcase.

Flew back to America after visiting my family in Germany. It was just me and my 2 kids (6 year old and 7 months old). We had to get up at 2 in the morning to drive to the airport. Had a few layovers. We got to Atlanta and were supposed to get on the last connection flight. There were some issues with the plane and the lady at the counter kept saying it will be any minute. I asked her if she could put us on another plane as it was getting late and I was traveling with 2 kids, one being an infant. I was starting to worry that I might run out of formula and diapers. She was super rude and said everyone was wanting to get on another flight. Well not everyone was traveling international and had 2 kids! We were stranded for 11 hours. My 6 yr old was passed out and my baby was crying unconsolably by the time they sent us to a different gate. Not a single person from the airline offered to help. I had other passengers help me with my luggage and kids. One man carried my 6 yr old son on the plane because we couldn't even wake him. He later said Daddy came and got us in Atlanta, didn't even realize we got on a plane. If I had known how long it would take my husband could have very well driven there to get us. It was an absolute nightmare and ever since I only book direct flights.

Me and my husband were travelling in Australia. We reached surfers paradise and because money was a bit tight we decided to go in a shared room. There were two bunk beds in this room and the only other person in there was this guy from New Zealand who was really moody. We soon found out why when we got back to the room after a night out. We fell asleep but I was woken by him coming back into the room with a girl. He'd obviously made arrangements to have a date round and wasn't going to let the fact he had company in the room stop him having his fun. He put a sheet around the bottom bunk and proceeded to have sex noisily for an hour. I couldn't get back to sleep, my husband never even woke. I heard it all 😭😭😭😭

Every holiday I went on with my narcissistic ex-boyfriend.

First holiday, we went to Italy and he left me alone in Florence one night because he called me by his ex-wife’s name. There we were at a bar having a bit of a laugh and he says, “Oh that is so funny Den (Denise)“ of course when I reacted unfavourably to him calling me that, he stormed off and left me alone. I ran outside hoping to catch up with him, to no avail. I had to make my way back to the hotel, not knowing where I was going and when I eventually got back there, crying my eyes out and feeling really afraid, he demanded I pack my suitcase because we were going home.

So there I was packing and him watching me, me still bawling my eyes out and then suddenly he changes his mind. He beckons me to come over and suddenly I’m back in his arms and he wants to bag me. I was so grateful that he had changed his mind, I just gave in.

Looking back on this behaviour, I so wish I had had the emotional strength back then to have just got rid of him. I could have saved myself so much misery, which was waiting for me around the corner. 😩😢

Every holiday I had with him after that he ruined for me. He would behave in the same way, often picking a fight and leaving me alone. On our last holiday, I vowed that I would never go away with him again and I never did. He would always try and entice me back to go away with him, I stuck to my word.

I visited some lovely places, but the company was gross. If and when life gets back to some normality, I intend to go back to the countries we visited, so that I can make happier and fresh memories.

Went on a Greek cruise ship. The food was literally mountains of meat and piles of slimy okra. I lived on biscuits that I had with me. There was a horrendous storm as we crossed to Egypt and my boyfriend was throwing up for hours along with half the passengers (at least I don’t get seasick). Got to see the pyramids and the Sphinx though so not all bad! - but many beggars in Cairo and all over really. In later years I read that that ship had actually sunk!

I was on holiday in LA 12 years ago and got bitten 362 times by bed bugs. We didn't know what was biting me and I thought bed bugs were a thing of the past anyway. My partner got bitten just six times! Only on the last night did we see a bed bug. I was so poorly by this point with a really bad histamine reaction but we left the hotel immediately even though that meant going straight to the airport, waiting 15 hours for the plane and then another 17 hours in transit. The hotel tried to deny that they had bugs but I took photos, our travel agent refunded part of the hotel charge. I was put on antibiotics when I got back because I was showing signs of an infection. Other than that, it was a dream holiday!

Not really a holiday as such but booked our wedding in Gibraltar. The night before we were due to leave the ash cloud cancelled all flights. The problem was we had to be in Gibraltar the day before to ensure documents were all sorted for wedding. We travelled from Scotland to Plymouth stayed overnight (got bed bugs bites!) left at 5am ferry to Santander ran to catch the last bus to border my man basically ran in front of it to stop it lol! On bus for 6 hours transferred onto this mini bus in middle of nowhere pitch black full of dodgy looking men all whispering and looking at us. I thought we where going to be robbed lol Anyway we made it to border and got there just in time to register but had a mega argument outside building due to tiredness etc. I’m screaming I’m not getting married 😂 It all went amazing that was until the photographer turned up without most of his equipment and we had to wait on him going home to get stuff another hour lol I honestly think someone up there was trying to tell me something!
