Type 2 Diabetes

Hello all,

It's looking increasingly likely that I'm about to be diagnosed with T2D. Symptoms include a wound that won't heal (infected insect bite), up to the loo 3-4 times a night, not thrush, but *itching* (sorry if TMI), fatigue, and my eyesight getting noticeably worse.

Had my bloods done today, so expecting the call in a couple of days.

A bit about me, I'm nearly 50, white, female and quite overweight. So none of this is a shock really. I know the main aim is going to be to lose a significant amount of weight.

Is there anyone here with any personal experiences? Did you take medication? What sort of diet do you have to follow?
Thanks in advance for any replies, I am trying so hard not to panic!

Hi, I'm in a similar position. My last bloods showed HbA1c at 6.4%
and 6.5% is consistent with Type 2. It scared the heck out of me as my biological father lost a leg to diabetes.
My GP organised appointments with a podiatrist and a dietitian, I was given a diet plan to follow, basically lower carbs and less sugar. So my dinner plate would be half vegetables, quarter protein and quarter carbohydrate

I was eating very badly over winter (I'm in Australia) lots of biscuits, chocolate, hot chips, pasties.
I'll try to stick to the diet plan then get my bloods done again after three months. If no improvement then medication is the next step.
I hope I've helped a bit, it's a very concerning diagnosis to be confronted with.

My mum has type 2 and you can basically reverse it with a healthy diet and some exercise. But for this too work you’ll have to be disciplined with your food intake. Making food from scratch is also encouraged because so much sugar is hidden in almost everything.

My mum is on tablets (not sure what) and she is coping very well.

I think it’s just a learning curve and not as difficult as you imagine it will be

I work a lot with t2d and have a passion for reversing it, I helped a patient reduce their hba1c from 69 to 49 in about 6 months (just to give one example).
These are 2 great websites to check out https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ they have a 4 week meal planner and I use them in my everyday cooking at home myself! I think they have an app too?

https://www.dietdoctor.com/ Great for recipes. Don’t bother signing up for the premium version there’s no need to. I also don’t believe that keto is necessary for good results, low carb is fine just as it is!

Usually metformin is the intro medication - you could either ask to trial lifestyle changes for 3 months first and retest after 3 months before considering meds to see if you can manage it through diet? However metformin is protective against cardiovascular disease and can also help manage your appetite too so there’s a few things to consider!

This is literally my bread and butter (excuse the pun) so happy to help (in a non professional opinion!!)

Blood results back today.
In whatever they measure it in:

48+ is diabetic
42-47 is ‘you’re on your way there’

mine was 35.
So yes, I’m pleased. Yet mystified as to why I have so many symptoms.

I’ve decided to follow the diet plan from the Low Carb Freshwell site anyway, as I need to lose a substantial amount of weight.
It has been a kick up the a that I needed. Even though I don’t have it, I’m going to kind of think that I do, diet wise.
Thanks so much to everyone who replied.
