Just watching now.. in all honesty I’ve never really bought into the Diana hype, she seemed (to me, born in ‘93) self obsessed, false and just as bad as Charles for affairs. The whole obsessive praise for her to this day (generally, not on here particularly) is odd. That being said, while they seem to be glossing over her affairs, they do seem to be going hard on her being shortsighted rather than self serving, and emotional rather than calculating, which is interesting.
I'm a 95 baby, so I don't have the affection for her. And agree, yes, Charles had plenty of faults, but so did Diana. They were in some ways as bad as each other.

Netflix shading Andrew made me literally go full on drag queen and say aloud (in a room on my own) " Oh the SHADE" - it was when Andrew was talking about the Koo Stark film and says something like 'A bunch of old grey haired pervs in a country manor initiating a young girl' ... I was waiting for the Eastenders duff duff duffs (or the Andrew actor turning to the camera and winking lol)

Oh my god yes!! Ruined it for me and my husband - just so ridiculous and such an American style of acting....people don't whisper talk to each other

I’ve watched the first two episodes, sorry if this has been said I haven’t read the whole thread but I can’t believe how bad the casting is compared to earlier series. all I see and hear is Dolores umbridge 😂

Not that I’m saying it’s terrible I just mean in comparison to previous series. For example josh Connor I thought was fantastic as was the actress who played princess Anne. And obv Matt smith and Claire foy were great

Am halfway through ep1 and can’t help but laugh at whoever cast this actress as the Queen Mother. She’s too thin, blonde and totally off.
If Imelda hadn’t called her “mummy” I wouldn’t have known who she was meant to be 😂

On the subject of casting, I think they've badly miscast Blair, which is a pity given the prominent role he's going to have in Season 6. Bertie Carvel is a fine actor generally but he comes off like he's doing a parody impression. Perhaps we've been spoiled by Michael Sheen or maybe it's the dress/wig but I can't see Carvel as Blair.

Despite the comments about him being 'too sexy for Major', I actually really liked Jonny Lee Miller's portrayal and thought he embodied Major's mannerisms and persona very well.

1. Fuck me they’re really going for Harry being a twat. It’s hilarious.

2. William is VERY golden child-y which is interesting.

3. the ritz episode was beautiful

4. it all feels very rushed. I could have done with less of the Diana episodes and more of this

5. Carole Mid isn’t coming across well is she?

I thought it felt very ‘soapy’. Charles was portrayed extremely sympathetically and I really don’t imagine him being that emotionally demonstrative! The Queen came across as a right cold hearted bitch, but I don’t think she had much time for Diana! The ghost scenes are cringe!
ghost dodi worked way better for me than ghost diana (and other sentences i never thought i would say!) - mohammed al fayed ended up being the most compelling character (and the best acting performance) in this series for me, and i thought using his son as the sort of manifestation of his guilt was effective. however, the rest was cringe i agree!

I thought the first four episodes were soapy, but it got a lot better - the Ritz episode in particular was wonderfully done and very moving. Lesley Manville is such a good actor. And Imelda Staunton has that pursing of the lips down perfectly.

While the script is truly awful, I have to credit the actor Salim Dau for his portrayal of Mohammed Al Fayed. MoMo might be the villain of the piece - and I daresay there are some former Harrods shopgirls who are delighted to see him cast as the baddie - but Dau plays him like a Shakespearean villain, or the origin story of an evil character in a superhero movie. You'd want a heart of stone not to be moved by his performance, and I find it interesting that there is silence when the royals in Balmoral and the diplomats in Paris are being informed of Diana's death, yet Mohammed Al Fayed gives a full-throated cry of anguish when seeing his son dead in the morgue.

I finished it last night. I have enjoyed the William and Kate scenes, and of course Margaret’s episode.
I loved the scene with William and Harry, with them talking about William II being murdered by his brother Henry. Ouch, that was a cringeworthy moment.
Harry has been portrayed in an almost entirely negative light, which I really don’t think is true of the time. Harry (pre Meghan) was charismatic, cheeky and endearing. I don’t see that this came across on the Crown at all. Netflix must have been pretty pissed off with Prince Harry 🙊

I agree. Ultimately I think they both suffered because they just weren’t a match. They were not compatible in any way shape or form and him being in love with someone else meant they were doomed from the beginning. I did feel more pity for her given she’s was only 19 when they got engaged and she was blatantly infatuated. We’ve all been in love with someone who didn’t care for us and I think that’s why a lot of people relate to her 😔 on the other hand Charles felt immense pressure to live up to his parents relationship, to choose a queen and tried to put the crown first and failed.

Have to say that Gillian Anderson looks and sounds amazing as Thatcher!
Gillian Anderson is going to steal this series, I know a lot of people are saying it's going to be the woman playing Diana, and I'm sure she will be great, but Gillian Anderson is going to win awards for her Thatcher. I just know it.

I’ve got so far as Fagan in the show. I have to say, I have no idea why that episode was dedicated to that one event? We had 2 minutes of Diana’s dress, 10 mins about the Falklands war but a whole episode for an intruder? Felt like the episode was from a totally different show.
It was definitely excessive, but it worked showing the absolute misery of the 80s for the working class compared to the Royals and how sheltered they are, with Fagan as the crossover between them. But the point was indeed laboured!

Hmm not enjoying it either. I always liked the “real stories” alongside the royal stuff. Aberfan, the fog, Michael Fagan etc. the straight plain royal stufff is boring. Plus the Diana market is over saturated. Hope part two is better.

I’m halfway through episode 5 I think, I love HBC and I think Olivia is a good queen. Love Anne too!
The Charles and Di/Camilla stuff is interesting, I wonder if we will hear the tampon conversation 😂
Apparently the actor playing Charles made it a condition upon taking the role that that scene wouldn't be in it, he felt it was too much and didn't want to have to put his parents through watching him act it out. Can't say I blame him really, even the thought of that phone call makes me cringe!

I'm really enjoying this season so far - it's so tragic watching it knowing the outcome.

I am a bit disappointed by the lack of detail in the other characters' lives though - not showing Anne's wedding, or children, no real talk of Margaret's family etc when they were such prominent characters up until this season. I know the story is focused on 'the crown' ie the Queen and future King but I feel its a bit lacking because of it.

Give the man who played Mohammed Al Fayed all the awards. He played an absolute blinder this season. I wonder how his family are dealing with D+D deaths/ media frenzy around them being pinned of Mohammed, who isn’t around any more to defend himself? I know it’s a tv show but it paints Diana as an unwilling participant, when we all know she played silly games with the press. I found that incredibly frustrating and I don’t even know them.

Really didn't enjoy the hunting of the stag, however I think they were trying to represent what Charles Spencer said in his reading at Diana's funeral
"a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of modern age"
