Not really sure there’s a solution to this (other than get a new job) but I’ve got myself into a niche job which I now hate. I’ve been signed off with stress until the end of the month and I just can’t work there much longer. I’m talking to recruiters etc but I feel so stuck, my mental and physical health have taken a complete nosedive.

Need some ideas for hobbies...
I like reading and gardening. I’m early forties. I just need some distraction and distance at the moment and on working on me I’ve realised I don’t have any hobbies? Don’t know what to do? I’m quite creative. Hobby ideas please?

I'm not really sure if it qualifies a 'hobby' really but I've gotten into those gem painting kits lately - a fab distraction as you're just laser focused for a while and you get a nice picture at the end of it.

I’m so sorry to hear this MW. I think you’re right, probably the best way forward is to look at options for another role somewhere else. Is it likely you’ll be signed off longer? A month doesn’t seem that long if nothing will change

I enjoying trying as much as I can an have found buying a little set off Amazon helps when am unsure if it's something I'll really like or not, they do a ton of little starter kits for needle felting, needle punching, diamond art, soap making, candle making, crochet, knitting etc

I've found I really enjoy the diamond art an right now am doing keyrings, if you enjoy gardening they also do little butterfly's or dragonfly's you can put in your pots, there's also little gardening kits like grow your own bonsai tree you might be interested in if your looking to stay with gardening

May I interest you in paper crafting? Scrapbooking, memory keeping, fountain pen ink collecting (fountain pen collecting if you're rich), diaries, stationery?

Do you want something to do alone or something social? If it’s the latter a book club might be fun. You can do classes in sewing, jewelry making, are, pottery, flower arranging etc. There are hardening societies in most town and villages.
Moving away from crafts, things that take time rather than investing in kit you could join your parish council, town or village halls often have fundraising commitees. Schools and not for profit organisations need volunteers laymen for their boards. You could even look at being a magistrate.

While you’re looking for something else could you try writing down all the things you used to enjoy about the role and trying to concentrate on those while you work out your notice. Take a day at a time. If you can do something for a minute, push it to an hour, then a day. Just 5 days and you’ve done a week and so on. Break it down into manageable time blocks and just try to get through until the next lunch break, evening, weekend.

A friend of mine doesn’t cross stitch but not using kits, she designs her own. If you like gardening have you ever looked into garden design courses (online)? Reading is my go to, do you stick with certain authors/genres? It can be good to walk into a bookshop and grab a book and just read and see where that takes you.

Night classes were in the past cheap but now, here at least, are expensive, the breadth of things you can study is amazing but expensive.

Some craft magazines have free kits and tutorials in - how I began cross stitch which I do less off now), can design your own as well.

not sure if it counts as a hobby but my best distraction technique when I’m in my head a bit is jigsaws!

Thank you all so much for your suggestions lots of great ideas for me to ponder.

I struck up the courage and enrolled on a part-time college course around my employment today and will certainly have a look at the suggestions you’ve all made.

Thank you. I’ve been feeling very stuck in a rut, heartbroken, low recently but I feel more positive today. Thank you xxxx

I need some advice as to whether I should raise this encounter as a complaint to the store manager:

I went to purchase a clothing item at a well-known store. The item was full price (not on sale). I got to the till and the sales associate processes my purchase. Literally the minute the card terminal read payment ‘approved’, the sales associate proceeds to say ‘You have 14 days for exchange only, no refund’.

I got really annoyed because I found it absolutely shady she didn’t mention the special refund policy before I’d paid for the item. She willingly concealed this information until the payment terminal approved the transaction. Additionally, nowhere at the till did they have a plaque stating the return policy.

In addition to her not being particularly pleasant, I found this type of practice rather shady.

Nah I think it's common practice they say it after the sale. Definitely have done when I've been shopping recently

Places have stopped doing refunds, online returns are charging now as well.
Too many people taking advantage I’m afraid.

I don't think they're obliged to offer you a refund unless faulty anyway?

No, it’s not about the policy itself. It’s about the fact the policy was disclosed during the transaction and at no point before.
Tbf you could've asked. I always asked before paying what the returns policy is. I seldom try on clothes as I hate shopping so often need to return things

I agree, I could have asked but usually, when it’s exchange only, stores have a plaque on the till advising customers of this. I’ve also bought items from this brand before and it was always full refund, hence the reason I did not ask.
