I listened to Kavana’s audio book on Spotify “Pop Scars” he also had Nigel as a manager. He went into more detail about Nigel, which is an interesting and unsettling listen. Likely did it as he has much less than Robbie, so not really worth suing and a smaller audience (eg it won’t make newspapers when he admitted Nigel cracked onto him when he spoke to him about his music and snogged him when Kav was VERY young and Nige was mid 30s-40) 🤢 Nigel comes across very toxic and controlling in Kav’s book.
Keep meaning to read/listen to his book. Would you recommend it?

I’ve listened to it, Nigel groomed him, without a doubt.😰
It’s an easy listen, doesn’t require much concentration, parts of it are really sad. You don’t realise how much is actually going on in the background with these pop stars when they are portrayed all happy and smiley.
Defo worth a read/listen 👍 x

I think he groomed them all to be honest. I wouldn't be surprised if down the line, Gary admits to something with how close Smith kept him.

Funny how there have been numerous examples of gay men turned boy band svengalis who turned out to be emotionally and sexually abusive (putting it mildly), plus fraud/embezzlement and goodness knows what else.

God there is a Smash Hits blast from the past there! I’ll need to try and listen to this

I read it over Christmas, dark, sad and funny- would 100% recommend!
Nigel basically took Kavana on when he was 16, for 2 years he love bombed him, told him he was the next big thing, made him think they were in love ect to the point where Kav didn't even realise he'd been groomed until a therapist broke it to him 20 years later. Nigel had sex with him on the day of his 18th Birthday 🤢

I always got the feeling something happened between Nigel and Jason. I think Gary was too valuable as the song writer and Nigel liked to go for the more vulnerable ones.
It was telling Jason only agreed to tour again (in 2005) if Nigel had absolutely nothing to do with them.

Yes I get that impression too. Jason seemed troubled in later interviews. In a different, less destructive way to Robbie but there is something there.

I don't think Gary comes out well out of this documentary. I feel like he's saying a lot of things that he thinks people want to hear. I still think deep down he's only in it for himself.

Ugh, and 18 was the age of consent for gay men back then, wasn’t it? Nothing says “predator” like waiting until the kid is legal before having sex with them, like that makes it OK.

I think Jason is gay or at least bi. I clearly remember when the For The Record documentary came out, thinking that Jason sounded so camp, and I’d never realised that before.

Agree, something didn’t sit right watching the documentary, Nigel was very controlling with all of them, manipulating them individually, it was uncomfortable viewing in parts especially knowing what had happened with Kavana.
I definitely think there is more to the Nigel story.

I thought the documentary was good, but it only briefly mentioned some of the bad times, there was a lot more that went on with mental health, breakdowns, addictions & rehab, especially in Marks case which wasn’t even mentioned.

I think Gary can come across badly in interviews because his responses sound so rehearsed. He’s always sounded like a fifty year old man, even when he was 22.

He’s very guarded and doesn’t like to let people in. If Robbie is an open book, Gary is the opposite. I think he carries a lot of baggage from his “failure” years and still isn’t over the trauma of being a public laughing stock.

He’s also a workaholic and when TT aren’t active, needs to be busy with solo projects. I don’t think that means he’s only in it for himself, I genuinely think the three of them are in a good place in their old age.

Yes it was, he apparently took him away from his Birthday party. Sick stuff and goes some way into seeing why Kav was so messed up. NMS lost interest in him when he signed Adam Rickett- another one who I wonder if something happened to.

How is Kavana now? I'll definitely give that book a go.

I think they are now but I think it took him a long time to care about the others. People can and do change though. I think he was humbled after his solo career. I'm delighted the three of them kept going and seem like genuine friends now.

Sober 4 years. He's done some interesting interviews on YouTube about relapse/recovery. He's doing a mini tour in Asia this year, he seems in a better place ♥

I didn’t know that about kavana
There is definitely a lot more to the Nigel story. Gary or whoever it was said about Jason wanting to see Nigel in his own when they reformed as he had unfinished business. I’m not sure if anything untoward happened between them though as it didn’t sound like they ever got on that well.

I enjoyed it. I always think it’s a shame they focus so much on Robbie when he was quite a short period of the era of Take That. I’m guessing him and Jason don’t get paid for this as it was all archive footage of them.
I like to think they are still in touch with Jason and just respect his wishes not to be involved publicly.
It would have been nice to hear more about them as a three, how it’s different from the 90s, how much more involved they are with the direction of the band and workload. They touched on Nigel making all the decisions first time round but not really about how it works now

Old age! They’re only in their fifties
