And she really doesn’t get how important it is for so many children to have that hot meal. It’s clear that she doesn’t understand food poverty at all given her swaps are generally for more expensive food. She really riles me!!

In fairness she has some very valid points.
Yes the scheme is not perfect but it is monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis.

One of the messages Katriona shared also said something interesting, the writer said how SM is making money from all the engagement she gets on these posts, so effectively profiting from throwing shade on an anti-poverty measure.
Her point on SM being extremely privileged is excellent. I doubt Sophie will have the balls to reply

So all the little kids whose parents don’t/can’t provide regular meals, for whatever reason, are being tit on because this bleeping eejit is on her hobby horse about Ultra Processed Foods. Ok!

Does she not understand that children who experience inter-generational poverty/have parents who love them and are trying to do their best in low paying jobs etc don’t care or know about palm oil or ethically sourced ingredients? duck off you snobby bleep! Most people are trying their best with what they’re given 😣

Don't forget the children coming from homes where mam or dad are addicts or have issues and don't provide their children with meals. Sometimes this is the only hot meal children in poverty get. Even though we are a wealthy country there are lots of poor children in dire situations.

Has SM actually said school meals should be stopped? She hasn’t, so far as I’m aware. She’s talking about the quality, which in my child’s school is really awful. The kids aren’t eating the food and a lot of people have stopped getting the lunches.
Improving the quality of the food benefits all children.
I’m not a huge fan of unqualified people giving advice but SM has a point with this one.
At one stage she found a chicken curry with 30 ingredients.
SM isnt judging parents, she’s addressing the providers.

In general UFP are a huge issue in society. And they wouldn’t be in people ate small amounts in their diets but they often don’t. Discussing that isn’t snobbery. Food companies have done a much bigger disservice to working class people than SM ever has.

And I’m actually not a huge fan of supermarket influencers or picking up a product listing ingredients without actually explaining what the issue is.

But feeding kids a soggy chicken curry with a ton of unnecessary ingredients used to keep costs down, being re heated in a plastic lined box should be discussed.

I think what she is doing is very dangerous. While the hot food scheme is not perfect,. It is new and is a start. In Ireland schools don't have canteens, the government is not going to build canteens in every school so we are where we are.

While the quality may not be what every one would like, as Katrina o Sullivan says for many it's the only hot meal they get. Kids can also opt out, parents can still make their lunch, my sister does for one niece, the other 2 love the meals but 1 doesn't.

As for darina Allen and her community kitchens, that's not going to happen either

I feel Sophie Morris is in very privileged position, her videos are harmful to young mothers in particular making them feel very guilty about what their children are eating. She may say its directed at producers but mothers are hearing it.

What's wise is she benefits financially, her book, programme, car etc etc

Ultimately her only goal is to become more famous and make more money! That’s the reality.

I don’t fully disagree.

But it’s being turned into some sort of class warfare when it really doesn’t need to be.

The goal of a business is to make a profit. And in many cases they will do so as cheaply as they can get away with. Look at all the sweatshops and issues in fast fashion.

I don’t disagree that a less than perfect school meal is better than hunger. But we can still do better. When Jamie Oliver took on school meals in the UK no one accused him of snobbery or wanting to deprive hungry children.

We could build canteens in schools over a number of years if the political will was there.

I follow an American dietician living in Paris. The school dinners in France are amazing. I’d eat them & I wouldn’t touch my kids school meals. Reheated in a soggy plastic box.

Why not strive to do better for all children, and those who need it most will actually benefit.

Totally agree with you here. I also think they should look at giving parents a choice on a cold lunch option. They had to do it one day in our school and it was the one and only time my child ate everything, even the fruit and she said she'd love that every day instead of the hot ones.

We can probably all agree there are problems with the school meals and hopefully things will improve. The issue with Sophie is that she is not a dietitian and in no position to be talking about additives when she clearly can’t explain what is bad about them.

I agree, but on balance people are overly triggered by her. I have heard few dieticians explain well what the issue is with what she is saying apart from either stating the obvious UFPs are fine in small amounts, or simply stating she’s not a dietician. I agree simply reading additives without explanation isn’t ideal. But she has shone a spotlight on misleading marketing and caused people to reflect on what they are eating,

I have huge sympathy for any child coming to school hungry. I fail to see what SM does to worsen that. She has never said the meals should be abolished.

I’ve seen a dietitianleave a comment that she isn’t a fan of the school meals & no one really engaged with her.

I’m torn about how I feel about people saying she is shaming mothers. It’s fairly clear that isn’t her intention. People are taking the worst possible interpretation because they are triggered by a middle class attractive woman filming in supermarkets.

There are many legitimate reasons as to why partners fed their children a less than ideal diet. There is also laziness. I’ve been lazy myself at times. Childen are a lot of work. They need to be fed, kept clean, read to etc etc. I do wonder if some of the comments saying SM makes me feel bad that I only feed my kids chips etc are coming from a legitimate place.

Next she will be after coca cola. That honey she recommended the other day looked like ear wax and was four times the price of squeezey honey.

Mick Kelly from the GIY initiative in Waterford is as deranged as Sophie. They're so privileged and cannot see past their on biases.

The worst part about Mick is that GIY works with schools so he can spread fear to kids. He never mentions that the facility is sponsored by Innocent smoothies.... Owned by Coca Cola 😂😂😂

How come she’s not on about the school lunches that didn’t cater to our children’s religious beliefs this week! No Ash Wednesday specials?!

Does she really think many people are sitting eating the whole bag themselves?! She’ll be at Costco next
She has no idea what message she's spreading now. It's a mix of misleading marketing (mostly it isn't), health (she hasn't a clue and this is getting watered down ..she recommends stuff laced with salt), country of origin and pricing.

Oh and ban Nutella and buy a high fiber expensive peanut butter instead. No.... I like Nutella and am capable of not eating the jar for breakfast 😂She's all over the place trying to stay relevant
