I agree. And, after being forced to listen to 'The Subway' so many times, I finally figured out why I don't like it!
Reason: It's derivative (and possibly even borderline plagiarism?)
In my opinion, Chappell basically smushed 3 pre-existing songs together:
Opening guitar riff = sounds like 'Linger' by the Cranberries
Vocals = sounds like 'Breathe (2 AM)' by Anna Nalick
Harmony = sounds like both 'August' and 'Fearless' by Taylor Swift (and I strongly dislike Taylor, but even I can admit that)

This is where I perform my impression of an old man shaking his fist at clouds and say that almost all modern music sounds so similar to me that you could say only one female, one male and one group perform it all and and I'd believe you.

There's a weird girls version of last Christmas that comes on at work and it completely changed the layout of the verses and when it comes on at work it drives me mad
