I don’t worry about it, I already said I don’t believe what 1001 others posted yesterday, but I don’t tell people to shut up, stop scaremongering and call them conspiracy theorists. I’m genuinely interested in this theory, sorry if that annoys you 🤷🏻‍♀️
It's not annoying, it's amusing. I get the feeling that these people actually want a societal collapse to happen, just so they can finally be proved right. "Told you so" as they fight over the last remaining scrap of potato peelings.

I've heard people say that all civilizations follow the same path before they fall, they all end up very hedonistic with less morality and family values.

That does seem to tie in to our overly greedy, sexualised society that worships consumerism.

I would also say our distribution of wealth is probably a marker that things can't go on the way they are, with a tiny minority having all the money.
Should the whole thing collapse then money will become meaningless. Even more than it is now. A handful of rice can become more valuable than a billion quid given the right set of circumstances. Can’t eat zeros on a screen.

I just can't see why society will collapse if the internet does.

We lose all money in the bank, but debt also, so that will be a great equaliser. We still have phone lines. Life worked fine before the internet, I remember it.
There would be a few weeks of struggle as we get things back to phone lines faxs and mail, but after that surely bit would be fine. Maybe better.

Eh, I don't think it's really as simple as that. Here's a whole article on how it affects a whole bunch of things. I never considered that companies like Google and Amazon would lose a lot, if not all, of their business and leave people out of a job and they employ around 1.3 million people worldwide. That alone would no longer just be a few weeks of struggle. I also can't imagine many people wanting to work if they can't get paid and that has a whole host of effects on everything
We would also be put onto digital currencies which are controlled by the government, just imagine how much control they would have, for example, sorry you’ve used your alcohol allowance for the week so you can’t buy that bottle of wine, sorry you’ve used your sugar allowance for the week you cannot buy that cake. How is wiping your debts worth signing over complete control to the government. Think I’d rather live in a free country thanks

Yeah I think the revisited MIT paper was more likely, slower changes to society (as we know it) rather than the overnight collapse because the internet’s turned off.
I think if someone hid the internet, you would be surprised how quickly crowd sourced hackers would get it back. Remember that bug the other year which affected several countries and the NHS? Random everyday hacker guy stopped it.
I just don’t subscribe to the “Dr Evil taking over the world” theory. There’s loads of factions in the world who don’t disagree, from governments down to individuals. They work against each other unless they need to work together.

There’s one for you to start on if you are actually interested which you probably aren’t. @prozacprincess mabye you should read it too, instead of giving the sick emoji to everyone try and educate yourself on a different opinion to what you believe in.
I'll see if my library has it.

Incidentally, I attended a conference on climate change a couple of months ago (online). One of the climate change deniers giving a talk said that the climate models don't work because they don't fit the data for average temperatures in the last few decades, so how can we use them to predict future temperatures? It turned out that he was using a global model but average temperatures from just Europe 🤣🤦‍♀️

Thank you! I’m naturally a very anxious person, so seeing things like this puts me on high alert. Sad to admit, but I was one of those people in January preparing for a national lock down. My MH suffered badly, I genuinely thought it would be like the purge.
I am as well, which is partly why I started the thread cos I was concerned by what I was reading.

No substance to their post though, the fact they have neglected to come back shows that. 💙

I was talking with a (much younger) colleague the other day, she was astonished to realise that "climate change" isn't something that has just recently been discovered. I was reading books written over 30 years ago that talked about it, although different terms were used (greenhouse effect etc). CFC's were first banned in 1976, as scientists realised the damage that they were causing to the atmosphere. This is not new science, and the idea that a closed ecosystem, can continue to sustain increasing numbers of humans, along with their toxic waste, is laughable. This is not an opinion, it's not some hippy-dippy fairy tale, it is proven fact, the only disputes are over the numbers. Humans will die out eventually, we've been here for the blink of an eye in evolutionary terms, the Earth will go on without us, as will (hopefully) some of the flora and fauna.

The "societal collapse"?? I think that some societies are already seeing this in action. Venezuela anyone?
Correct.

London Calling by The Clash, fine song on a great album by a great band. Released 1979. The chorus could have been a speech by Greta Thunberg today.

“The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning
I live by the river”

1979. Nothing new here.

Im not sure about the whole wild fire thing.

Someone said on the radio this morning that wild fires in Greece are not a new thing and not uncommon. Yet they are being reported as a symptom of climate change

I wonder if it's more selective reporting to create a false narrative about climate change acceleration.
It’s a load if shit to be honest. Iv read many books about climate change and it’s very clear to me that it’s a left wing agenda to put more control on our lives. Anyone that wants to argue with me then try and read a book combating this ideology and then come back and let me know what you think 👍🏼 As if we think we’ve made that much of an impact in less than 50 years on the planet that’s been here for billions of years 🙄 oh and it’s now become ‘fashionable’ to be into climate change, which should speak for itself.

Dare I say that the rise in very nationalist right wing political beliefs will be a huge contributing factor imo, and if not that it will be countries simply being selfish

We're already seeing it now to some extent. Countries don't appear very keen to be sharing the vaccine without some sort of dumb argument accompanying it, and third world/developing countries appear to be largely ignored. COVID may not be the most deadly thing out there, but if the predictions are right and we're expecting to see more viruses like this then it's very worrying

Migration also, to some extent even the Brexit discourse about immigrants (UKIP especially). With global warming, it's expected that a lot more people will start migrating to countries that have 'better' climates and even those living in large cities will want to relocate due to the heat (especially if they live in flats). When you set up the discourse that nearly all migration is bad, I just don't see it going very well

Ooh this is interesting! It's all very morbid too though. I wonder just *what* it will be that causes this. Article says we have about 10 years to change the current course we are on.

I remember back in 2000 we had the mellenium bug which we were told would cause planes to crash from the sky and nuclear reactors to go onto meltdown. Nowt happened, other than IT companies becoming very rich providing bug solutions. Which were basically changing the year on the date field from two digits to four.
It is a bit of a fallacy that the millenium bug/y2k all came to nothing and was just a big fuss for no reason but it actually involved a lot of IT professionals working around the clock to test the f**k out of their software to ensure fixes and patches would hold up at the switch over hence why nothing dramatic happened.

I think if society collapses it will be because the majority of needs can’t be met (food, power etc) likely to be related to climate change and or illnesses. For society to collapse the people “in charge” have to lose power - not by losing an election, by governments losing authority. If they can’t feed/house/look after the people then they will collapse. Bigger countries try to step in/invade. If the worlds larger economies like USA, India, China, Germany/EU, Russia all had overthrown governments society would collapse.
A few migrants making it across the channel is hardly the beginning of the end, plus over a million Europeans left London due to Brexit and the pandemic so I’m sure there’s plenty of room.

If you are in total believe that climate change is ‘killing us’ places please come back in 10 years and tell us how we are burnt to death 😂 this is the biggest conspiracy theory going and you are all being played, come back and let me know how that feels
My turn to make some assumptions: by reading this thread and others it seems the majority of people on this site live in developed Western nations. We will not be the ones impacted the most. Most likely we will still be around in 10 years time and be able to confirm that we haven't died because of climate change. The people who will suffer the most have played next to no part in this.
