Snooping on an Ex

Just remembered the snooping I did on ex's now wife. Looked up her parents, siblings on Facebook, browsed siblings wedding pics to get a glimpse of wife and my ex and their children. Looked at siblings businesses online and their Facebooks. Looked up planning permissions in her area and found parents planning application for a new house. Had a sub to the 'British Newspaper Archive' for another project and used it to search her name, my ex's name and some of her family members to see if they'd featured in local newspapers...nothing too juicy came up

I know it sounds utterly mad, I was trying to build up a picture of his wifes life and what my ex liked about her, and if there were any red flags. I met her briefly long before they were a couple (used to socialise in same circles).

In case you're wondering, NO I don't want to meet her again - it would be too awkward. And not gonna turn up at her house or something, I'm not that crazy!

Really interesting article, sounds a bit like what I did (I don't have fake social media accounts tho)

I compared myself to new wife when I heard they were a couple and it really hurt
oh girl you went in deep but no judgement from me 😅

I think that’s the pitfalls of it. It feeds your natural curiosity but also… invites comparison. When I stalked my exes girlfriend (now wife) every so often for years, it really made me eyeroll. She was the opposite to me in every way. She came across as so meek and docile, shaping her life around my ex. On one hand, it made so much sense that he went for this type of girl.

but it was mildly infuriating too - he was a crappy person and it felt like by putting him on this pedestal, she just enabled him. And it almost felt worse being replaced by someone who was the opposite to me in so many ways.

I remember when I was posting family holiday pics on insta and I was being stalked by my partners ex AND my ex’s new girlfriend and I had a massive fight with my sister. I remember thinking, these ladies will be thinking I’m having the time of my life (which I was, mostly) but this really is just my highlight reel and not my reality.

Exactly this- there’s ego at play and an element of trying to work out why her and not me. From snooping on her and her family I know she’s from a churchy background like him, but he didn’t seem to appreciate forthright women at all and apparently his long-term ex was abusive as she was ‘bullish and ambitious🤔’, but his current gf appears to be both of those things (nothing wrong with that) and outgoing.

As it happens we have an acquaintance in common who told me that her therapist warned her that with him she sees ‘all the red flags as green’- and he no doubt sees a nurse and a purse with her as he always seemed to struggle with money and has a chronic, progressive health condition, and she’s a doctor- so everyone’s a winner😅

ETA to say he looked me up on LinkedIn a few times a month or so ago which was a little strange after everything.

It’s quite sad but I don’t think I ever had a proper first love? My current fiancé is the first person I was truly in love with. I had huge crushes that I think were a type of love but not really.. real.

for some of them I’m like… ok yeh thank you social media for enlightening me. Some people really did peak in high school.

for others it’s a little more nostalgic? They look great and seem to be at a great place in life but no part of me would trade in my fiancé. I guess it’s wondering what could’ve been? But social media is a great reminder that you really end up where you’re supposed to be in life.

yep this is exactly how I feel. Glad we are both doing well in life and in the relationships meant for us!

I remember reading this article a few years ago and thinking… damn she’s brave admitting to this… but also… damn… she’s put some good tips in there.

😳😳 just thinking about the random Instagram follow requests i get! I always assumed they were just random accounts but what if it's someone stalking 😂 I'd say they are just random but that article 🤔 my she was extreme.

I used to assume they were innocent, now I’m convinced they are someone having a nosey.

im fuming my ex’s wife has gone private, I can’t judge her from afar anymore

the crazy thing is, the woman who wrote the article is stunning. She’s a pyschotherapist and an author. You’d *never* think she had insecurities about an ex and his new girlfriend. She describes stuff I totally do too, and think I’m crazy for.

I was never into running, but my fiancé’s ex was and my exes new girlfriend was. So I thought, duck it. I’m going to be a runner. It was weirdly competitive and Im not sure why? I guess it boiled down to my own insecurity and the reality that women are pitted against each other in general.

I think I mentioned before that my partner’s ex would go to the same places as us, take similar photos and post almost identical captions and I think on a very creepy level, it was her way of competing with me and proving to herself she was just as worthy of those experiences as me?

anyway, here’s the author of the article insta

It's odd one of them was a jewelry business for example, I wouldn't have thought too much of that, just someone growing a business. I didn't accept, I don't unless I know the person. But now I'm not so sure.

An ex, not the one I refer too in OP, completely non committal, it wasn't even a relationship in truths, more hook ups and yet I followed him like a puppy dog. It was all on his say so, I desperately wanted to be in a proper relationship with him.
He moved and next thing I heard he had completely settled down, loved up, for ages after I couldn't get over why it wasn't me, I tried to find out all the info, seen pictures of her and to be honest she must have been good in bed because she was no looker!
Awful when that happens, we really think the problem lies within ourselves, when in reality it's not. They aren't together anymore and honestly while I wouldn't entertain him ever again, I did feel a little smug 😌
men can be such trash sometimes. One of my exes, who was awful to me… met a girl from Australia on a trip we were supposed to be on together before he broke up with me out of the blue. I was devastated when we broke up. He’d pursued me even when initially I’d been disinterested, and it was the first time I’d let my guard down with someone. He said some very cruel and callous things, and started to show himself to be a very self centred person. Very early on I knew he wasn’t the one - I don’t know if he picked up on that. But the rejection and the cruelty cut me to the bone and took *years* to get over, and many hours of social media stalking/crying. Especially when I saw him doing a ton of stuff with this new girl and introducing him to our mutual friends.

Anyway, they must’ve been on/off and her prolific social media posting kinda gave it away.

She put online that they went official… then she went on a working holiday for a few months during which time, he was messaging me. Id assumed they’d broken up. He drunk text me at one point and told me he was torn between the two of us (not that I’d actually ever given him a reason to believe I wanted to get back together with him, he was just arrogant AF). We were supposed to travel to a mutual friends birthday party together and I *know* we could’ve hooked up, but I wasn’t interested in him anymore and it was a bit of a wake up call. The part of me that was tempted was just hurt ego, So I pulled a sickie, didn’t go and haven’t seen him since.

Shortly after she came back to the U.K. and resumed posting with him like nothing happened. She posted about their anniversary on dates which don’t align with that initial “going official” post years ago.

Gut instinct tells me he broke up with her, tested the waters with me and got back together with her at a later point. I don’t think I’d have ever realised if I hadn’t snooped on their social media. Snooping was a real eye opener because… you really can pick up on things even if it isn’t totally reflective of reality. E.g. I could tell she idolises him because she posted gushing captions about him constantly, posted poetry about a city guy (he’s from London) taking a small town girl (she’s a bit bogan) to see the world. I think she saw him as better and more worldly than her. She never posted any of her own friends or hobbies. Everything was about him, with him and with his friends. They’d go to concerts he always wanted to go to. Visit places on his bucket list. Moved to his preferred part of london.

Im surprised it lasted tbh, and I remember saying to a mutual friend… “I bet he’s stayed with her because he wants to move to Australia” her having grown up there, having a ready made Aussie family and being able to jump in with her friendship circle… makes it all easier. It was a very gutteral, instinctive feel.

right enough, he married her and has since moved permanently to Australia.

I don’t think our text exchanges would classify as cheating at all, but I couldn’t help but notice some patterns… he pushed me into “going official” with him on social media, just to abruptly end things with me a couple of months later. I’d always had a gut feeling he was texting an ex or another girl, but never got proof.

I was cut up about this new, plain girl and couldn’t understand why he rejected me so cruelly… but I got my answers from snooping on her socials and it was because she had him on a pedestal, made it easy for him to drop her and pick her back up when it suited, and was an easy avenue into the dream living location for him. She works in the medical field so like someone else’s ex, I think he saw her as a “nurse and a purse” since he works a very bland, boring, low paid job.

I’m not sure I’d have ever made peace with it the same way if I hadn’t snooped. For years I thought there was something wrong with me, something instrinsixally off because… he was in a long term relationship while I was single.

I think it slowly dawned on me from snooping, that the problem was always him. I was a little immature and a little too emotional for him tbf, but ultimately he wanted a fan girl not an equal partner. And it really cemented for me that he was never the person for me, that a lot of the hurt I went through wasn’t the loss of him (cos He was tank as a person) but it was the rejection and cruelty that cut me so deeply, which I think helped me heal and move on for good.

(sorry for dumping my experiences on you all, this is becoming very cathartic for me and I’m becoming a huge fan of encouraging snooping on our exes and their new partners 😅😅😅)

This echos the guy I'm talking about! The immediately moving on, zero interest in a relationship to full love declarations with someone new. Made all the harder by the fact like you he pursued me! I didn't even like him at the start. He chased.
I got the same texts and calls and I hate to admit this I did meet up with him when he was back in our home town 🥴 all while she was posting online about 'her guy'
I could be wrong but you saying about a nurse with a purse, I've never heard that before! I assumed she charmed him with her kind and caring nature, he seen her as a potential mother. But ha! It makes more sense that London is expensive and he slid right into that ready made circle.

I think you are right it's not the loss of him as he's a big red flag but it's the rejection. The sitting with mutual friends hearing about how great they are doing while everyone is shooting me looks, was awful and of course I was single for ages at that time. Made it seem like I was completely unwanted.

P.s I loved the episode of satc when Carrie bumps into Big with Natasha!
While I found out through friends it still felt like a sucker punch to the gut.
But I love her acting in that scene, I'm just a little stunned here and confused! Same sis same, they don't do commitment 😂 oh no wait they do.
oh god yeh, it’s a total sucker punch feeling. I think a lot of people experience similar to what we went through! I *hated* the way carrie referenced herself as being too wild to be tamed with that horse bolting in NYC… that was cringe.

but I do think sometimes guys go for the safe, adoring girl and SATC was pretty on point there. By safe I mean… they know she’s more into them, and therefore they are less likely to be hurt or rejected by her. I was a lot more emotional and reactive in my early 20s and I think it scared the tit out of my ex.

That particular breakup completely changed my view on dating and made so a lot more guarded. Before him, I assumed if a guy liked you, spent time trying to win you round, was very keen to have you on social media as his girlfriend and spent 4 nights a week with you… then, he must really like you. He told me he loved me a week before he ended it. Afterwards, it felt like I couldn’t really trust someone liked me, even if they gave me all indications they did. I was single for ages afterwards too and I was so self conscious about it.

I was so confused and never got any real closure or explanation. He probably didn’t even know what happened himself. I think that’s why I kept that line of communication open against my better judgement.

I really tortured myself for years over wtf happened. A lot of my friends have been in the same relationship from their early 20s and have never experienced a breakup, and a big part of me envied them.

but introspecting a little, I started to realise that part of the reason I was so cut up about it was because I had an anxious attachment style; I’d felt rejected and hurt most of my childhood and him rejecting me just confirmed all the worst parts I believed about myself.

part of me thinks, this guy didn’t bring anything positive to my life at all and I wish I’d never dated him. But another part of me thinks… well I maybe i wouldn’t have realised I needed to work on myself a bit.

Also, I’m doing really well in life (recently engaged, bought a house, got a dog, got a promotion in a field he’d initially wanted to go into). A part of me secretly hopes he snoops on me and experiences a small fraction of the inadequacy he made me feel. Don’t judge me lol. I want snooping to be a two way Street 😹😹😹😹

My ex walked right in front of me as he cut through a queue for the bar at a festival last week. I held my breath, inwardly praying that he wouldn’t realise it was me (he didn’t thankfully, if he had he’d have whisked his wife and child away sharpish, worried that I’d have told them about the 15 month affair he’d had when we were together).
He joined an adjacent queue and I watched him berate his toddler daughter for needing a poo - and it made me remember how controlling he’d been. I actually felt sorry for his wife and child and it gave me 100% closure. I have zero interest in what he’s up to. My snooping days are over!

Oh man, the women procreating with these trash bags… just why… creating the next generation of daddy issues.

glad you dodged that bullet. 15 months?!?

I started counselling recently and spoke about my ex from 10 years ago from when I was like 17 and I haven’t dealt with a lot of stuff from that time.

I feel like I’ve gone back 10 years coz I’m thinking about him a lot and I’ve been snooping and keep thinking having a chat with him about what happened but it would never happen. It’s so weird I haven’t thought about this stuff in so long because I moved on and I’m in a really good relationship with my fiancé, he’s married with kids and I wouldn’t dream of ruining it, it’s like I want closure from the whole thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t think that’s unusual tbh.

there was a guy I was seeing very very casually back in my uni days. Tbh I was a little in love with him, maybe more in what he represented. He was from my home town, captain of the rugby team, he was polite and respectful and kind. Very handsome. He was the ideal guy to 21 year old me. But we were due to graduate and he moved abroad while I moved to London. So it just was never going to work out.

I felt sick at the time, at how unfair it felt and how bad the timing was. I’d get into new relationships and be besotted then breakup and move on… but this guy always came back into my mind. The one that got away I guess.

a while back, around the time I got engaged to my fiancé, I started thinking about him and looking up what he was doing etc etc. it really played on my mind.

I think when you’re making a big commitment to someone, it’s normal to reflect on the past when you realise this is “it”. A new phase of life.

i think the emotional safety of a secure relationship, also allows your mind to process stuff from the past that you maybe felt you couldn’t confront before?

for me, part of a lot of my anguish/feeling for this guy was what he represented - I was so insecure and this guy I put on a pedestal seemed to like me back. That felt huge for me. It was the first time I’d put my feelings on the line for someone I liked. He was upper middle class, popular and good looking and those were all things I didn’t feel I was. It was one of the first steps in my life I think, where I was starting to believe I did deserve to be in a relationship with someone I liked and I wasn’t unworthy. him moving away, felt like rejection - which I wasn’t good at handling. And of course, it was the age old wondering of what could have been. Would we have made each other happy? Miserable? Where would my life have taken me? Would being in a relationship with him have helped me become more confident? I could’ve avoided the string of crappy men I ended up dating? Or could it have gone the opposite way? I’ll never know. What did you feel was unresolved with your ex?

but looking back. There were some red flags I ignored that hinted that he was very much an avoidant attachment style. He was difficult to connect with. There were underlying hints of mental health issues that I won’t go into. Things that hinted that us being together wouldn’t have been the rainbow and butterflies I was able to fantasise about, because that fantasy never got the chance to be disrupted by reality.

I kinda went full circle with my blast from the past. There are a lot of exes I’ve thought about speaking to. I don’t see any harm in having that conversation internally though. What would you like to say to him? And how do you think he’s likely to respond? I found stuff like that has helped me move on from a lot.
