I’d probably not admit this to anyone other than v close friends …but I snoop a lot on social media..
there’s a guy I was in love with at Uni from afar. He was super clever, handsome, captain of the rugby team and from the same home town as me. We’d always bump into each other but the timing was wrong. I had a boyfriend initially… then I was single but he had a girlfriend… then we finally got together briefly before he moved overseas and has been there ever since. I don’t think we’d have worked out as a couple at all, but it’s always a bit bitter sweet to wonder how things could’ve gone. I very much doubt he ever thinks about me!
I had a couple of
crappy exes and I occassionally look them up. One got engaged shortly after I did, and I look at his fiancé online and **really** hope he treats her better than he treated me.
another ex broke my heart because of how callous and selfish he was. He love bombed me then dumped me out of nowhere. It shook me for years, long after I realised he was an idiot and I was well rid. It completely changed how I viewed men and relationships. He met his now wife on a trip we were supposed to go on together and she moved across the world to be with him. Her neediness and adoration of him is probably why he married her tbh, his ego would be too fragile to be with someone who ever questioned him. They have a daughter now and she frequently humble brags online about how brilliant he is. Her life revolves around him entirely. I was at a wedding with him and she just sort of meekly followed him around. A part of me thinks maybe he’s changed drastically since we dated, but mostly I feel sorry for her that this is her idea of a dream husband and father.
i found out that another douchebag ex had blamed me for dumping his ex (who he cheated on me with. She didn’t know I existed at the time) via her Twitter. He’d also told her a bunch of lies about me to her, which she repeated online. I’m glad I found that out. I discovered her online after not only her viewing my insta stories… but her mum was involved in looking too

. It also confirmed to me that he’d cheated on me (she was a prolific tweeter and posted their dates together and things he’d said). It actually helped me move on when I realised what had happened.
annnnd I’ve been the victim of online stalking. My fiancé broke up with his ex years ago and she is a bit of a sociopath. I found out later she emotionally blackmailed him, manipulated him into giving her huge amounts of money, and tried to break us up several times in the early stages of us dating. We got together about a year after they split, but she obsessively stalked my insta stories. It was a fairly new feature at the time and I don’t think she realised I could see. Or maybe she did and didn’t care. And I mean Like, relentless stalked. I’d post a story and she’d have watched it within minutes. It became a bit of a game for me… I’d post something innocuous then check to see if she’d viewed it within 5 minutes. Usually she had. She must’ve been glued to her phone refreshing my account. She’d frequently accidentally like my pictures too. At the time I didn’t realise what a sociopath she was and didn’t want to embarrass her, so just ignored it and didn’t say anything. A lot of
tit happened and when I realised what an absolute lunatic she was (she created multiple fake accounts to stalk me when I blocked her, and at one point she blocked me so I couldn’t block her, and then unblocked specifically to view and like my pictures). I told my ex who then confronted her and asked that she stopped stalking me, at which point she flat out denied it. She’d been doing it for about a year at that point. She made a fake profile of a little boy and called it the name my partner wants to name his first kid. That’s how creepy it was. She’d copy my pictures and captions from insta onto her own at times. Even now, she copies places we’ve gone to, recreates pictures we’ve taken together etc.
it sounds silly and over dramatic looking back, but it had a real impact on me. I was scared to post anything in case I accidentally revealed my address or where I lived. At the time there was a spat of acid attacks happening in the U.K. and I was terrified she’d take a hit out on me (lol). She was genuinely that unhinged and unpredictable. She was also super vindicative to my partner. I really don’t know what she was capable of. It was like a narcissistic rage, there was no way she was in love with him based on how she treated him. But it was like she just couldn’t accept or handle the rejection.
She moved away a few years ago and I locked down all my socials, blocked any suspect accounts as well as her. I used to be a lot more open online but that made me super guarded.
I made a burner account to follow her purely for my own peace of mind. After a solid year of relentless stalking me and my ex, she then started posting online alluding to her being a victim. Unbelievable. She’s got a new boyfriend now who she has love bombed and gotten engaged to within months of knowing him. Part of me wishes her well, mostly I think he doesn’t know what he has signed up for or what she’s capable of, poor sod. I had to do a trawl of fake accounts just a couple of weeks ago because I’d noticed she’d copied a photo I’d posted.
overall, I like being able to see what people are up to. I think it’s good to reflect. I’m glad I’m able to look at my exes profiles and feel immense relief. I blamed myself for being broken up with but by doing a bit of stalking and seeing his new girlfriend, I understand that it was more about him than me, and his own insecurities. I don’t think id have ever realised that if it hadn’t been for social media snooping.
but then obvs it can be really hurtful, and bring out the absolute worst in people.
