Selfish Mother

Cannot see a thread for Molly Gunn aka Selfish Mother? So sorry if there is one, I’ve done quite a few word searches

Molly’s suggestion today that us mum’s should have “a night or few away” on our own (she’s in Ibiza) has left me no choice today but to start a thread.

She’s tried to make the suggestion relatable by saying the few nights away could “even” just be in the UK! Ha. The idea that I could just have a few nights away in a posh hotel in Ibiza or “even” just the Uk is depressingly not in any way a possibility. Thanks for the tip though Molly!

She drives me bonkers along with all the other "mama merch" bellends. The privilege is unbelievable

I unfollowed after she lost her tit over a MN thread that complained that the “mother”/“mama” tips made her feel tit (suffering infertility).

Did anyone notice that she said she loved her solo vacation, but couldn't wait to get back to her little ones, and she's also heading off to Glastonbury as well? Good grief, you legit couldn't even make this up sometimes....!!!

Same. She handled it terribly and was so horrible about a woman ultimately wishing she could wear a jumper because she desperately wanted to be a mum. Her reaction was vile.

I went to buy her jumper for a friend and they were so overpriced, no wonder she could donate however much to charity - you’re not taking a penny out of your profits to donate you’ve just stuck the donation onto the price.

That’s what I wonder too! I mean these products are marketed on the fact they are “good tees” so Molly has profited from this. I also agree they’ve just slapped £10 extra on the price of the already over priced jumper, flogged it to middle class mums and given the £10 to charity and pocketed the profits from it being overpriced. I’d rather chose a charity to donate to myself. But then she is raising a lot of money so can’t argue with that, even if the whole thing is a bit of a ruse

I used to like Molly and the brand, and (I’m embarrassed to say) I bought a couple of sweatshirts, albeit in sales. But as time went on she seemed less and less relatable to me - she’s obviously quite posh, wealthy, massively privileged, former career as a newspaper journalist, etc. She tries to make out she’s a bit of a hippy, but it’s a very monied, white middle class kind of bohemian hippy... yawn.

I have to say, the declaration that all mothers really should be able to bugger off to Ibiza on their own is the last straw for me. I’m lucky if I can bugger off to my local Costa on my own.

Isn’t the Selfish Mother brand a bit... flaky, too? What happened to the blog? And then the blog was re-launched on Insta as a “zine”, and that seemed to fizzle out really quickly too. The shop recently closed and the online shop is constantly throwing out discount codes and sales. I wouldn’t wish the closure of a business on anyone, but I do feel like Selfish Mother rode the first wave of Instamum success and now the market is saturated with slogan tees and jumpers.

She’s nothing but a champagne socialist. Her “designs” are foul - did anyone see that horrid floral jumper? She’s jumping on Peoples emotions to sell tat and because it’s for charity, sadly, people get sucked in.

Yes I wondered if things weren’t going so well. Since she stopped the kids and the men’s sales. Closed down the shop. And I kept getting emails about her discounted courses... on what excatly!?

Has anything in history dated so quickly as those MOTHER jumpers. I cringe to think I wore one it won’t even sell on eBay now for £2

I have to admit I bought my boyfriend a Papa T-shirt and I have a Mama jumper and they are really well made but I cannot believe I spend £55 on the jumper looking back 🙈 I was just so excited about our new baby and got sucked into the Instamums at the time. Eyes are wide open now though 🙄

hahaha I have a few of the Mama jumpers (all bought on saleeeee!) and I love them, because I really love the word Mama and I'm so happy to be one. Not that I think people who don't wear them aren't proud of being mama's we all are!!! lol I just like them, they are super easy to pull on after swimming class with my little one etc.

That being said, that mama-style train has definitely sailed... and everyone is doing them now for a lot cheaper, and to be frank, lots of cooler styles and colours.

Her current list of products she's got in the store, just don't seem very cohesive anymore, a random mustard jumper, a floral skirt etc. Weird.

I really admired her when she was going to dry to not drink for an entire year, and then gave up like 2 months in. ;[

I inwardly cringe now when I see people in the street wearing those selfish mother “mama” jumpers now. I got totallly suckered in when I first became a mum. Spend far too much on trendy baby clothes and unnecessary bits to try and fit in with these Instagram people that I felt at the time were a bit like friends 🙈 I’m so glad I never saved enough money to buy one of those Mana jumpers though

John Lewis is flogging the selfish mother tops and sweaters now on discount. All sizes available. £27 down from £55 I think I saw. Music’s stopped.

One of my friend’s wrote a blog piece for the site that featured in a book of blog posts that was published as part of the Selfish Mother merch. The whole book was apparently made from posts from the site. When I asked how much money she had been paid for the piece, she said nothing, it was for charity so was happy to have it published just to be in the book. I can’t imagine all of the money from the book went to charity though?

God I hate that. SM would be one of the first to moan and be scathing if asked to do copy work for free. Yet happy to play the same tricks on her own audience “for charity/get exposure/feature on our x number hits a day page”.

She’s now flogging the mama and winging it logos on Chilly’s bottles and reusable coffee cups now. The latest fad to cash in on? She never sticks at anything. What happened to the weekly blogzine on insta? That lasted about three months. I also think she used to do some kind of mama retreat - that seems to have gone by the wayside too.
