Wasn’t she to move into the house she bought after she graduated uni? Maybe she’ll move out after the masters? I know most people her age are dying to get out the family home (even if you have a fantastic relationship with them) it’s natural behaviour to want to be independent. She has the finances to move out on her own so the only thing stopping her is her obvious crippling anxiety about being alone/self-sufficient. I guess if she moves out then she can no longer have her childhood fantasies.

I couldn’t help but compare her showing how she approaches a craft to Bernadette Banner. Ofc Bernadette isn’t a beginner so it’s not completely fair, but even jus the mindset - Bernadette is very meticulous with everything she does, whereas Ruby is more focused on half-assing it and puts more work into the busywork surrounding it than her, er, creation itself

As someone who's unemployed atm (graduate life, the economy is dying etc)... the 'boredom' is actually the worst part.
Not in the sense that you're a child who wants to go and play all the time, but in the crushing sense of failure, being alone with your thoughts too much, sensing your parents want you to leave ASAP and resent you but you can't, because you're priced out of even the dingiest rental house and nobody wants to hire you. It's being called 'lazy' and 'useless' as if it's your fault you're not getting hired instantly, despite the fact you're searching for jobs every day alongside cleaning, cooking and watching people your age seemingly live perfect lives because they can afford to travel the world on their parents' dime.

Ruby infuriates me sometimes because there's no reason she has to live this depressing life; she has more than enough money and support from her parents and could do whatever she wants, whenever she wants. If she wanted to go and live in London, she could probably afford it. She could get an unpaid internship in a fantastic career and still support her lifestyle. Instead, she stays at home and lives a childish version of the life a lot of people her age are living, albeit hers is entirely by choice. Seeing her romanticise boredom but not try to break out of the rut and use her resources to just, y'know, change her situation, is so damn frustrating. There's no need for her to try and make her existing life more interesting when she has so few barriers to creating actual change in her life. You know it's bad when people like Holly Gabrielle are having more exciting lives than her...

Totally off topic for Ruby, but I was recently rejected from 6 jobs I applied to and have been really struggling, so it makes me feel less alone to hear other people are going through the same thing. Sending you lots of love, stay strong and hopefully we’ll get through it

This! She has the luxury of pursuing a life of leisure and not having to worry about finances. If she ever wanted to get a more serious job I don’t doubt she has family members or family friends that are high in their careers that could bag her a job for life… shit like that is a goldmine.

Watching her most recent video I realised she tries so hard to create a narrative of being one of those troubled, misunderstood genius creators who were only recognised after their death! When in reality she’s just some self-obsessed isolated mentally undeveloped adult who has no grasp on perspective or reality.

if I was in Ruby’s position, I’d be sitting in the Maldives *pretending to write a book*

I often check this thread but haven’t posted in a while. Just want to say I’m in the exact same position as you, and it completely sucks. Watching others live their dream lives whilst you sit there feeling like a failure is heartbreaking.

i applied for a number of jobs in the past month and got rejection after refection and now I am invited to a second interview (tomorrow) at a company I had an interview already. At the same time I got a call from another company to invite me (the interview is next Tuesday) and then I got an invitation to another (for Monday) ... all in 24 hours. what is going on?! lol I don't know if I get one of the jobs, but the invitations gave me an ego boost. Don't give up!!

I just watched her video or skipped through it but had to watch the part where she sews. what exactly is that cloth supposed to be?! First I thought she was going to sew a shirt and I thought "oh my god did you just hold it on your body to see if it would fit and sewed it together? don't you know that measurement exists?!"
that whole scene reminded me of the times in my childhood where I wanted to create something, didn't know how to do it (because it was the early 90s and there was no Google or Youtube to just do a quick search) and just did what I thought would work. I remember vaguely that I created some sandals or something using paper and sponge rubber. I bet my childhood self would've cut and sewed the cloth thing exactly the way Ruby did.

The sloppy cutting and raw edge would not have mattered so much if she'd left a gap and then turned the collar inside out. That's how you hide the raw edge of the seam inside, and then you close the gap. Every basic sewing instruction will tell you to do that.

100% agree I hope I didn't come across as saying that I think all unemployed people live like she does. I meant more that she is employed part time and a 'full time youtuber' yet shes actively seeking boredom and things to fill her days with faux productivity instead of just doing her actual work and then having free time for fun stuff, instead she's intellectualising boredom. Also hope I didn't sound like I equate unemployed with being lazy, especially in the current climate that's just not the case. It's so hard to get a job atm that seeing her waste so many opportunities is so aggravating

Ruby and her behavior actually remind me a lot of a girl I know. She's gonna be 29 this year, she's still a student - IMHO more because she doesn't know what to do after finishing uni than out of the wish to gain more knowledge - lives in a shared apartment with other students (who are all around 20), and has a part-time job in a supermarket. I love her dearly, but she is so obviously - like Ruby - stuck in the stage of thinking of herself as a teenager (or a child, in Ruby's case). This girl I know already has one master's degree, but she went on to study for another bachelor's degree, stayed living in the same room that she got when she moved to the town to pursue her studies and has been doing the same part-time job for ages. I think it kind of made her stuck in one place mentally - e. g. all of her original roommates (with whom she moved into the shared apartment) have finished their studies and moved out, got jobs, moved in with their partners, and new "generation" moved into the rooms, so while she is gonna be 29, the people that now surround her are almost all like nineteen, twenty (undergraduate students). And I honestly believe it gives her the feeling that she is also only twenty. She even sometimes says things like "once I'm older" - as if she wasn't old enough to make her own decisions.
I see a lot of this in Ruby, in the same sense that she does pretty much the same things she used to do when doing her A-levels. She still has the day structured in the same way, she's still staying in the same room, she still "obeys" the rules of the house (in the sense that it's her mom and dad, and she's the child who doesn't (have to be) responsible for themselves; she doesn't exist separately from them). When I was at home during the lockdown, one of the first things I did was that I rearranged and cleaned up my childhood bedroom - I was also a uni student, like Ruby, at the time and I was spending most of my time away from my parents home, but when I was stuck back at it, it made me feel like I was 12 again, and I didn't like it. So I put away my toys and old pictures and stuff like that, to make myself feel more like an adult. It was really weird for me to be back there all the time, since I went to uni and had a part-time job and had friends that my parents never met etc. but suddenly I was back in the same spot as when I was a child.
The problem with Ruby is, she never "reinvented" herself as an adult. She never spend a long time alone (in the sense of not being with relatives), and even her uni experience seems to have been a bit in vain (she came to a place where she wasn't the most special girl, and it seems like she didn't enjoy it a lot/didn't profit from the opportunities?), she didn't get a job/internship where she would be surrounded by others her age (but not from her family circle) to kinda see where they are at in life...

But idk what can her parents do. I think she has a very good relationship with her mum, so I don't think her mum would want to "throw her out" of the house - also, remember that it was her mum who recommended her to go to a therapy. I honestly don't think her mum is indifferent/careless (and from what Ruby says, if we can believe it, I feel like Marfa is also close with their mother - Ruby claimed they do spa days and movie watching together when they're at home; I feel like it's just that Marfa likes to pose as this "black sheep of the family", too extravagant and different to fit in - like some teenagers sometimes do, to feel like they have something to rebel against, although they migth have a great family background and relationships). So yeah, her mum won't send her packing, but at the same time, I can totally see her losing patience with Ruby just sitting at home doing barely anything (and apparently leaving dirty brushes all around, lmao). after all, Ruby is an adult, supposedly responsible for own health and happiness, and even if her mother recommends/suggests something, there is no way Ruby is obliged to listen to her - and I just don't think her mother would have the guts to e. g. start demanding rent from Ruby, or demand her to do important tasks/chores (since Ruby can't even drive so it's not like she can go shopping for the family or run errands etc.).

On Ruby being at home - the thing that's most maddening to me is that she owns her own house and has done absolutely nothing with it. I know we've had this discussion a million times that she doesn't realise her privilege but she's in a unique position practically no one else is in their early 20s to make enough money to be completely financially independent and own small property. Yet she's continued to live as a teenager in her parent's bedroom since graduating apart from a 3-week trip to New England that she never would have done if it hadn't been paid.
She could definitely have moved out by now and still stayed close to her family. Honestly if I were the Boneses I'd at least have sat her down by now and asked her about her future and gently encourage her to start packing up the old candles and school uniforms and get on with it.

Roobee owns her own house?! Do you know what she does with it? Rent it out, or is it just sitting empty? She is SUCH a Tory.

The Bones parents must be even more irritated by her clinging like a limpet if she has her own bloody place.

Her parents are probably too scared to try and make Ruby grow up and get independence. She would probably throw huge tantrums, guilt trip the fuck out of them, and sink deeper into her own world. They have probably tried before and got nowhere.

I personally think it must drive her parents crazy, having her around all the time. If they want her to go to work, they have to drive her because she can't drive. Then her anxiety condition (which I of course have empathy for) where they can't leave her in the house alone. All her tea cluttering up the cupboards, taking her mother's stamp box (Roob claims that they 'share it'). Then her content creating, they have to be out of her way while she does her videos. Having THEIR home constantly on the internet.

As parents, Im sure they are worried about her. But yeah. It must also be irritating. They are at the age when its nice to just have your own space, kids out of the home. Especially given that both their kids seem to be able to afford to move out.

She bought a cottage a few years ago. There was a vlog about it but the video's been removed, probably due to privacy issues and backlash. I'm pretty sure she rents it out. I know Ruby earned lots of money through YouTube, but I'm guessing her parents helped financially too? But yes, she does have the option of moving into her own place.
